Mullein - Making a tincture & collecting Flowers
Common Mullein is one plant that has fascinated me the most. Almost everyone starts their herbalist journey with this broad-leaf huge mullein. Why? It’s easy to identify, it’s safe to use and can’t be overdosed, tea from mullein is absolutely delicious!
I would like to invite you to start your herbal journey with Mullein. We hope that this small video will be a good introduction to this wonderful herb that will get you started in doing further research and ultimately collecting your own mullein flowers and making your own mullein tea and tincture.

I found one of these plants by my stream bank in its first year it was small and knew there was something special with those velvet leaves. Transplanted in my garden and was surprised when it shot up to 6 feet in the summer here! Now I'm watching all these videos. Thanks for the content. You know a lot about this plant!

Hi! Thank you for your delightful video. I have never seen mullein growing in the wild before and I could not believe how tall your mullein plant grew. The information you gave was very beneficial and well-presented. I have now subscribed. Blessings to you and yours.
I learned something new - using the leaves as food wraps like banana leaves! Thanks! My share is making oil. I learned from either Susun Weed or Rosemary Gladstar can’t remember but we cut the top of the flowering plant, let it sit for bugs to leave then chop it up with fresh garlic, place in jar and cover with olive oil. Let it sit in a warm spot even placing your jars in a sandbox if you aren’t in a warmer area to help infuse,and after 6-8 weeks strain and you have good ear oil

I would also suggest if one is taking prescription meds for any condition you discuss the addition of any herbal teas against the prescriptions to avoid a conflict
Yes you dry it make sure all the moisture is out chop it up put it in a jar cover it with olive oil or any oil except for vegetable oil and let it sit for 6 to 8 weeks in a cool dark place and shake it everyday and then strain it and there you go
Use jojoba oil as it doesn't go rancid like olive oil and can be kept indefinitely.

mullein root extract would be made the same way? Dry it 1st or not? Thanks for a great vid!

I'd probably guess it'll be somewhat of a same way, the difference is that roots need to be blended up, or ground up so to expose more surface area for proper extraction.

Thank you for sharing. I planted some seeds couple years ago and have many plants growing. Was wondering how and when to harvest. Going to make tincture just wondering how long it takes before using much do you take if you have a cold?

I make tea out of the leaves to treat colds. Leaves can be harvested any time. Often when the winters aren't too cold you can find fresh leaves in December and well into January. You can dry leaves for winter use.

Ok where did you make the tincture?? I don’t see you making a tincture. I saw you in the yard and then it abruptly cut to you holding the tincture. Thx!
Thanks for your informative video. I am really interested in making a tincture or a cough syrup. I actually saw a video for a cough syrup using sugar and the flowers only. I found it very easy but since my kitchen window is very shaded I placed the jar in direct sun in my back yard, it seems like most of the sugar is crystallizing even though I have been shaking it. Our high temps here in Ca have been from mid 70 to high 80s. Do u have any videos or suggestions for cough syrup?

Hello Maria, If you live in the south, it might be a bit difficult to find plants / seeds. If you drive north to a colder climate you should be able to spot it growing left and right on the sides of the roads. In our area you can find Mullein all over the place.
Everyone talks about the respiratory aspects but what about sleeping and IBS type issues?
does the tincture take the sting out of the bite or does the alcohol sting so bad you don't feel it anymore. lol. half way serious here. thank you for taking the time to teach us some very helpful info. I plan on growing some next year. @@YouCanToday I am learning a little more every time. I am still watching videos and I am very glad to learn. I have heard nothing but good stories about this seed store and they only sell heirloom seeds. Is mullein a good companion plant to any vegetables. Please leave a link so I can look it up.
What is the difference between mullien and comfrey? To me they almost look alike at young stages. Thankyou very much for your explanation.
@YouCanToday
Жыл бұрын
Mullien leaves are a lighter green color and are soft and fuzzy, comfrey leaves are dark green and prickly. Mullien flowers are yellow and grow on a stock, comfrey flowers are light purple. Those are the most easy to see differences.

Yes as Amy mentioned 2 years it takes for it to grow. First year it's a tiny plant, the second year it explodes into a huge and mighty flowering stalk with huge leaves!

You can use leaves during the entire 2 year life. Pick leaves that are healthy looking and not brown. Flowers will only be in second year.

Once the tincture is ready, can you strain it out & reuse the mullein leaves for something else?? Or do you throw them out? Thanks
@YouCanToday
Жыл бұрын
Throw them out. The alcohol extracts the healing properties from the herb. What is left no longer holds any medicinal value.
Does the plant grow back after the second year? Do you pull up after the second year?
@YouCanToday
Жыл бұрын
The first year the plant will grow leaves. The second year it will send the flower stock. It dies on it's own (at least in Central PA) in the winter. I haven't ever pulled any up as the decomposing roots and leaves are beneficial to the soil.
3:32 so any type of Vodka from the alcohol store is ok for tincture? Thanks
@YouCanToday
Жыл бұрын
i think so.
would refrigeration keep ear oil from spoiling?
@YouCanToday
2 жыл бұрын
yes, but it still will have a "shelf life". Also, you could dehydrate the flowers and then do an oil infusion. The reason infused oil spoils is because of the moisture content of the fresh herb. If the flowers are first dehydrated then put into oil it won't spoil. You will have to only take the shelf life of the oil you are using as a base into consideration.
Guess my big question is how does this effect the bunches of meds I take every morning.

Is the tincture good to use or is loose tea the best?
@YouCanToday
3 жыл бұрын
Good Day. I'd say that tincture and loose tea have slightly different purpose and thus I can't really say one is better then the other. When you drink tea from mullein leaves it's really good for lungs, digestion it's really earthy and uplifting tonic. Tea from the flowers alone is more of an uplifting property but it's missing many of the earthy elements to it that you find in the leaves. Tincture itself is used when someone is sick, or when you need a strong and powerful amount of mullein properties delivered to every cell of your body fast. On a regular basis I'd say a tea with leaves and flowers is the best while tincture is an important part of the medicine chest.

@@YouCanToday I have the tincture and not the tea at the moment I do feel wheezy and I know I have mucus in my chest lung area. When I sleep at night I make wheezy noises the cold air or anything cold like ice drinks tends to worsen it. At the moment I've just used the tincture hope I feel better.

What about the little black bugs in them?

Hello Lydia. Yes it's best to shake them off if possible. Some people see it as "just protein". I don't look at little black bugs as such. They are creatures and they belong in the wild. We do our best to keep them out of our tinctures. Just like with any flowers or mushrooms you are always bound to get some insects that make their way into our diet.
