All about Self Heal | A wild medicinal plant everyone should know!

Self heal (prunella vulgaris) is a very special little plant which has been used as medicine for centuries around the world. It is one of the more widely studied wild medicinal herbs and in this video I talk about traditional uses, some of the studies that have been done with self heal, how to identify it and how I like to craft it into herbal remedies. It is a bit early in the season to start seeing self heal's small beautiful flowers blooming but I wanted to get this video out a little earlier in hopes that you will be keeping an eye out for it.

I am a Licensed Acupuncturist, with 2 Masters Degrees in Oriental Medicine, and Prunella Vulgaris is one of my favorite Chinese Herbs. Your video is very informative, and I appreciate all the new information about it that I wasn’t aware of. I’m actually growing it this year from seed which I sowed last autumn, and it overwintered well, despite several weeks of snow, covered with a plastic bag. I will save seeds from a few flowers to sow in a partial shade and sun bed on the east side of my house, which is in a pine, fir, and oak forest. I’m so happy to grow this lovely herb and flower!

@@SmallSeeds What the biggest frustration factor for me is when I research an herb and it's benefits, I will find medical sites that will tell you what is said about various benefits of the herb but always conclude that the claim is inconclusive because no studies have been done to support it. Cynical me says, sure you don't do a study because you don't want to find out it is true.

I never thought to use a plunger for tea either. I was given one as a gift but I don’t really like plunger coffee. Now I’ll be using it for herbal teas (not for black tea as ‘squeezing’ black tea releases the tannins which give the tea a bitter flavour)

Wonderful.. this beautiful plant has self-seeded in my garden so I am harvesting if often as a LandCare action, it not being native to this area or country.. I love it, and am so excited to find such a gentle healing plant so readily avaiable and simply beautiful, too. . Thank you for this video.

I planted some in my yard and it has spread like wildfire! I love when it blooms because of all the pollinators. I must look into a recipe for a salve and tincture. Thanks for sharing!

I don't live in the woods (unfortunately😭) so I will order a plant from a rare herb supplier I recently discovered and when it arrives I'll plant it so carefully in the small garden I share with my apartment neighbours. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of this amazing plant🌱
