    The videos are getting ever more so professional - two views in one, a close-up and one from farther away. And the mules are so reliable! This is especially important when you stand or walk between two angled logs that are closing- injuries could follow so quickly. By the way, I cannot discover any lack of momentum in the way you and your mules work.

    Hey! Thank you sir that means a lot to me. And I’m glad you enjoy them. There are so many ways to get hurt logging, and especially with hand cutting and working with animals. Buttttt, a feller has to have a good steady team and KNOW his team. Always paying attention to them and what they’re telling you. They’ll let ya know before anything crazy happens. Mules are better about it than horses are typically. They’ll give you some warning. By momentum..I mean on this job we’re on. We’re hoping to get things moving! Lord, rain has been killing us lately. Can’t hardly get anything done right now seems like. Thanks for the kind words my friend and for always watching! I surely appreciate you.

    Been working my way back through old vids since I found your channel. The quality you are posting is exponentially improved well done. I am in the Adirondack’s of NY State never logged with mules drove a mule in an amusement park that powered an old fashion merry go round. My grandfather logged with draft team, Belgiums and I spent time in woods with him. Just an idea from afar wonder if pair log tongues would pull out to hook choker faster than peavy. Rolling. Be safe and be careful.

    @zachodom7486

    Hey there! That’s so cool your experiences. Thank you for sharing with me. Okay, so on the tongs..yes it would it were a big log or fouled up log that you couldn’t roll easy enough with a peavey. Also, a swamp hook works well for that also and is easier to set. I didn’t have my swamp hook on my cart (which wasn’t cool) lol. And my tongs was on my log wagon. So I just used what I had handy. But yessir you’re right. It would def work better than the peavey. Thank you so much for the kind words and also for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please

    This is wonderful to see! I watch a couple of folks that use draft horses on KZread and I have to say that there is a whole other feeling about how the mules work. I can’t put my finger on it. I was always under the impression that mules were more difficult to deal with but I don’t see that in your working with them. I have heard of hybrid vigour and that can be a force to deal with indeed. Pat Perrelli was a mule guy before he became a horse trainer and he was speaking about that in one of his videos. Mules fascinate me. I feel like they would out smart me though lolol.

  • @zachodom7486

    @zachodom7486

    Well, mules are naturally thinkers! They take their time on tasks. They move a little slower and think before doing. I personally like slower and more methodical teams vs hot rods that can’t stand still and rush everywhere they go. Mules are highly intelligent often times more intelligent than their driver. If you funnel that intelligence and self preservation instinct they have, then you can get a far superior work animal. Problem is, so many people can’t stay ahead of them. What is often described as stubborn, actually is an animal that is often times just smarter than the human. You have to be smarter than the mule to get everything out of it. Such as when I gave them a break before they decided they needed one on their own. They won’t hurt themselves for you! Period. When they get winded and tired they’re gonna stop. So…stop them before they get winded and let em blow. Next time, they’ll go further for you. If that makes sense. You’ve just got to stay ahead of them is the main thing. And listen to them when they speak: and they do! Sometimes they’re just blowing smoke and need a tap on their rear ends to tighten up a little and let em know you ain’t playing with em. They’ll try ya a little to see what they can get by with. But, once they know you’re for real and you know what’s up…it becomes a beautiful thing. Anyway, thank you for such kind words about my mules and the video. I appreciate it. Also, thanks for taking time to watch and comment! Take care and do come again! Please

    Not picking on you, my friend. I agree with you about being kind. Fasting helps a lot with dealing with heat, even if you don't do a full 24 hours. When I'm fasting, I'll be cold in the middle of summer. Then when I eat, I go back to being hot and miserable. I'm pretty heavy, but that isn't the only reason for fasting, although people want to make it out to be that these days. Jesus didn't say, "you, if you fast." He said, "you, when you fast." Fasting can really make the summer more bearable. When I was working on horse farms, I would fast all day, and then eat a decent meal in the evening. When you only eat once a day, the heat just doesn't seem as bad. Also, a lot of the old mule men I knew a half century ago would wear nothing but overalls in summer, the bibs serving as their shirt. There is a lot of air flow through a pair of bibs if you don't have much under them. When I was delivering pizza with a paraffin fired oven in the back seat and no AC, I used to wear a wet t-shirt under my uniform. Nobody could tell from the outside, since we had synthetic wicking shirts, and it kept me cool. I kept my hair wet under my hat as well, and just tucked it up in the hat where no one could see it.

  • @zachodom7486

    Yes you’re right. I don’t eat during the day at all. I can’t really work while I’m eating. Gets me too sluggish. I am from down south Alabama originally. So the heat here in Tennessee doesn’t bother me too bad. And it bothered my mules this time mainly because they haven’t worked in a couple weeks. But they’ll fall back inline pretty quick. Anyway, thank you for taking time to watch and comment. And offer advice. I appreciate it. Thanks a bunch! Take care and do come again, anytime

    A horse maybe, but you won’t bust a mule usually. They’ll just lay down on you before they hurt themselves for you no matter that kind of a bond a person thinks they have with them lol. That’s one thing I like about a mule. They’re not gonna strain so hard to hurt themselves for you. Or walk themselves off a cliff. Most horses won’t either, but some will. Horses don’t tend to question a man as much as a mule does. But in any case, a man just has to be careful and use common sense. We don’t overdo things. Plenty of breaks and build up slow.
