I loved these moments where they were reassigned in early S2. Her to Quantico and him doing shitty surveillance work. And you could see how deep their bond went and how quickly they came to care about each other over the first season. It just didn't feel like a typical FBI partner relationship, it felt more you know, and you can see it in these moments. That longing and affection between them, the need for things to be the way they were. It was here that you could see that absence makes the heart grow fonder. and it was here that in my eyes you could see just how much Mulder had fallen in love with Scully, especially to result in just how much a mess he becomes when she's taken later on. I also loved how they built the support system between them too, because the season didn't start out like this. Mulder tried to push her away because he was in such a dark and depressive place in 'little green men'. Scully tried to connect with him and he blanked her caught up in his head, he was openly hostile when she used shadow means to communicate, but you felt for him because you could see he was so lost and you could see that Scully was worried about him. It's after she rescues him from the listening station that we really see Mulder's "you are the only one i trust". They have these cute, flirty and supportive moments for several episodes. Mulder still treats her like she's beside him to confer with about cases. He calls her in as a doctor. Mulder tells her that he wants to leave the FBI and implies it's because he doesn't have her anymore. Scully wants him to transfer to Quantico but Mulder tells her that the FBI don't want them together, and Scully tells Mulder she'd miss him if he left. This is after 1 frickin season of working together, and they're like this? They're so incredibly attached to each other. And it's why the syndicate target her, because Krycek sees just how deep this Scully problem goes when her and Mulder exclude him in a conversation. Krycek sees what we all know from just being in a room with the pair, and this leads up to Scully being abducted and Mulder falling apart.

You nailed it. I love the Mulder/Scully/Krycek scene because if you re-watch it knowing Krycek is a mole, you can see how-when he comes to stand behind them as they’re deep in conversation-his eyes narrow and he looks back and forth between them. You can see that he knows exactly what is happening here and it’s no surprise that his main takeaway from working with Mulder and meeting Scully once is “Scully’s a problem. A much larger problem than you described.” After seeing them together once, Krycek realizes what all X-Files fans acknowledge: Scully is the real driving force behind the X-Files, because Mulder couldn’t do it without her. The Syndicate needs him at a red light; Scully keeps that thing green all day. So if they want to stop Mulder, the only way to do that is eliminate Scully. Take Scully from Mulder and he falls apart.

@@fadedneverland6091 i agree but i also see it as a precursor to what CSM says to Jeffrey Spender in S5 before he burns Mulder's office down. he tells him you can kill a man but to truly kill him is to break his spirit. And Scully is Mulder's spirit. Yes she keeps them moving through the green lights with her credible science bent that gives the leverage within a court of law when closing cases. But that's not why the syndicate begin to target her. Of course she 's valuable and smart and just as much of an importance to the show as her other half. But Krycek isn't actually seeing this. He's been informed by CSM she is an obstacle before he infiltrates the FBI but it's actually how Mulder reacts to her is what has Krycek saying to CSM "Scully's a problem...a much bigger one than you thought" Krycek sees Mulder's emotional dependence, affection and obvious feelings for her. It's crucial because it's what he sees that makes him report how big of a problem she is. the first scene is this very intimate and sweet and flirty phone call between Mulder and Scully. Krycek is here in the back watching and studying Mulder. He then meets Scully and is the 3rd person to their bubble of mulder/scully. they freeze him out and he sees how deep their bond is. from here as a syndicate mole he can instantly look at Mulder and see his Achilles heel. scully is that and he reports to the CSM . And of course he's confirming what we know and the syndicate starts to realize. it's here "then we must take away what he holds most valuable..that with which he can't live without" begins to shape. The syndicate know mulder's heart before Mulder himself can acknowledge it. He is in love with her and to truly break mulder is to hurt her or take her away from him. and already early S2 is building Mulder up to this point where he falls apart when she's abducted. The X-files is closed, they're reassigned, he tries to push her away in his depressive and hopeless cynicism. but she doesn't let him. she saves him at the listening station in S2E1 and in return he latches onto her even harder. He's already showing the cracks with them not together. he misses her as his cynical bravado begins to crumble. He gives himself away in the parking garage trying to be hostile to her but can't, and admits that he should have something more, more tangible and he learned that from her. culminating in him slouched on the floor with her telling him not to give up and rubbing his hair. The poor guy ends up in the Arecibo listening station in Puerto Rico saying "before i could trust only myself. Now i can trust only you....and they've taken you away from me" talking to Scully on tape like she's a freakin avatar revealing all that BS bravado was a facade because he's hurting and trying to protect himself by not letting her close. he truly misses her and his depression is more than just the x-files being closed. And DD plays this so lost and boyishly forlorn too. he's so lost without her. and again a precursor to "you kept me honest. you made me a whole person" and then these moments peppered throughout before her abduction where they are flirty, soft and wistful. you see the longing. and he keeps running to her and conferring with her. and bringing her in as a doctor. the FBI try separating them but they are so incredibly attached that the FBI can't. and Scully is the voice of reason in his head in 'Duane Barry' as Mulder is starting to lose himself in Duane Barry and his alien fix. to the point Mulder in a room full of hostages at the travel agency is actively pushing Duane Barry deeper into his psychosis. It's so incredibly dangerous. and Mulder allows himself to become vulnerable to Duane Barry. and Duane Barry response of "i could never do that to you" to Mulder wanting to go with him to Skyland mountain. and oh god it's such a train wreck because Barry who is incredibly damaged from his abductions ends up doing the worst thing possible to Mulder after this - kidnapping Scully and taking her from Mulder. and the whole thing is just awful from start to finish. So when Mulder has Barry in interrogation and just loses it and chokes the ever loving crap out of him. It's in character for mulder because early S2 slowly builds him to the point where he becomes so reliant on her that when she's snatched and gone for 3 months Mulder just is a wreck wanting to cry, hit and /or kill something. And goes around just looking for a target for his pain wearing her cross to keep her close. Because we are beginning to see just how deep this relationship is. and that they are closer than friends before they ever become lovers. And because the villain of the week sees it, the syndicate sees it, the ratboy krycek sees it. everyone sees how to truly destroy mulder. And god love mulder because he's so vulnerable with his love for scully that he falls for it every single time. and he knows it himself. but it doesn't stop him because he simply can't live without her. if she dies she may as well take him with her. which is why his devastation and grief is so raw when she's abducted and why he spirals down in the cancer arc to sobbing at her bedside while she sleeps. and why he responds to the syndicate taking her in the movie by running to Antarctica and infiltrating a giant spaceship of vicious aliens to rescue her. ya see Mulder is predictable with his response to Scully being hurt or taken, but he's also underestimated because he'll willingly walk into your trap but then he'll F u up to get her back. he'll do anything for her. he'd even kill or die for her. and like it's actually sad with what happens here because it's my belief that Scully's abduction actually breaks him in a way that he never really recovers from. you actually see that when she's returned but the glaring example is that his Samantha quest changes to " I love my sister but if she returns at the expense of Scully being taken from me..well bye bye Samantha" and you see that in 'colony' when Mulder actually thinks Samantha is his sister and still exchanges her on that bridge for Scully. Scully's abduction does a number on mulder and i'll always hate Krycek especially for preventing Mulder from getting to her in 'ascension' but long story short, Krycek is seeing a different kind of obstacle than the one he's already been informed on. He's seeing that they are more than just your typical FBI colleagues. He's seeing the importance emotionally she has to Mulder. He's seeing the true way to hurt mulder and he's seeing what we all know? Mulder loves her.

@@rochey1010 When I watch Duane Barry & Ascension I wonder what CC originally had planned for M&S and the show's core alien/gov conspiracy storyline had they not had to write in Scully's abduction for S.2 to accommodate Anderson's pregnancy. It obviously affected the original trajectory of the show since that emergency adjustment eventually became one of the main overarching storylines throughout the series. CC may have discussed in the past what he originally had planned but I've never seen anything about it.

Krycek told CSM Scully was the bigger problem. To which he responded 'every problem has a solution'. All his efforts just drove them closer (thankfully) but our queen paid a heavy price for her loyalty. Great, great stuff, I'm a late comer to this show BUT I am very happy I am not alone. It seems young people who weren't born yet have discovered this series. I'm on my third binge round and I catch the TV episodes when I'm home.

All available material points to the contrary, apart from a couple of interviews (although they always did say that the narrative of them hating each other is an extreme exaggeration). They sure had a couple of shitty days where David was moody and Gillian didn't take his crap and they let the press blow it way out of proportion because it served their true situation.

I look at it like the evolution of her character. She started as a young medical doctor teaching at Quantico, she was so naive when she went to work with Mulder, she grew into her sophistication her hair evolved, her make-up, clothing, she grew up as an agent and as a woman in a male dominated field. Besides of course she was pregnant and probably wanted to hide some of the baby weight.
