Muireann Bradley, Ireland’s Roots and Blues Prodigy | Acoustic Guitar Sessions

Музыка

01:57 - "Candyman"
07:20 - "Police Dog Blues"
12:10 - "When the Levee Breaks"
Muireann Bradley, a young musician based in rural Ireland, is just one of countless acoustic guitarists around the world to enter the woodshed with grit and determination during the lockdown phase of the Covid pandemic. But what sets her apart is that she was only 13 years old at the time and emerged with a repertoire of vintage blues and folk songs that she sings and plays with great authenticity and conviction, not to mention a prodigious fingerstyle technique.
Now 17, Bradley first became inspired to pick up the guitar by listening to Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Reverend Gary Davis, and other blues pioneers with her musician father, in addition to hearing him picking around the house. Her earliest videos caught the attention of Josh Rosenthal of Tompkins Square Records, who recently released her debut album, I Kept These Old Blues. As the title suggests, it’s a collection of the standards that resonate most with her.
In this exclusive video, filmed at St Anne’s Church of Ireland churchyard, in Ballyshannon, Bradley performs three classic songs: Reverend Gary Davis’ version of “Candyman,” Blind Blake’s “Police Dog Blues,” and Memphis Minnie’s “When the Levee Breaks.” She also provides some insights into their history. To achieve a period-correct sound, she plays her Gibson LG-2 reissue; a Waterloo WL-S Deluxe, with its ladder bracing; and her personal favorite, an X-braced Waterloo WL-14X, whose V-shaped neck she finds feels the most like home.

Gary Davis, Skip James, Leadbelly, Geeshie Wiley, Memphis Minnie, Blind Lemon, Tommy Johnson, Son House, Willie Brown, Charlie Patton, Blind Blake. The more I listened the more I hear Rock n Roll and Soul. These black southerners are the endless pavement road what is Modern Music. Im 27 still listening to Robert Johnson everyday for many years including Eric Clapton's Robert Johnson versions, I cant get back into my Generation's Music. I still lose my breath when I hear Robert Johnson. It sounds like a cry for help. I love Ms Bradley's playing she makes me pick up the guitar because there's people in my Generation Z that will listen to 20's 30's music. Ms Bradley is a breath of fresh air.

Just stumbled on this posting and what a revelation! Muireann clearly has an intuitive feel for this old pre-war blues music. I discovered American country blues guitar music at the age of fifteen courtesy of John Pearse's UK TV series 'Hold Down a Chord'. He featured Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy and Sam McGee. Now, at the age of 71 I still love to play the old country/delta blues music on acoustic guitar. It warms the cockles of this old heart to see that young people like Muireann are carrying the torch into the future for the old blues musicians who were tragically neglected in their own time.

God blessed her with amazing talent and I will enjoy the rest of my years following her emerging career as a blues artist. This young lady has a true artistic talent and is situated on a extremely high level on the instrument plus she’s got that independence between the respiration of the the music and the singing, so few people and only the greatest, thinking about Robert Johnson. She is there for ever now at this point. And the cherry on top of this is her voice will mature in a marvelous way with the time. Good luck with you and your incredible talent young lady!

A masterful interpreter of the blues at age 17! Unheard of... And yet, here she is; the irrefutable Ms Muireann Bradley, and we can rest assured that the next generations will have their own new "guitar hero" of classic American ragtime, folk, and blues guitar music of the 1920s and 30s. I'd never expect that a young teen peer of Cooder, Fahey, Van Ronk, and all the rest of those greats would rise up out of northern Ireland of all places, but remember that much of the roots of our peerless American music travelled a similar course, bound for the great melting pot, just a century ago! Don't miss-out on this young "Moor-Un"; add her tunes to your playlists now, and share in this exquisite living history which represents one of the great cultural 'ties that bind' us all together!

Wow. I love this style of music. When I was in college around 1980 I saw Roy Bookbinder several times. He was a tremendous performer. He lived with and learned from Reverend Gary Davis and he knew Pink Anderson, a blues musician whose first name was taken for the band Pink Floyd. Anyway no one I currently know has ever heard of Roy Bookbinder, but this young lady knows and appreciates his music.
