I'm watching this from 2023, my father used to say a lot about Ali since my childhood. And now I came to realize that indeed Muhammad Ali was greatest of all time and history had never seen such a great legend and never will see I see.

The left hook by Joe at 37:20 looked like it stunned the hell out of Ali. If that was on the point of the chin he may not be getting up. Ali for this fight could time Joe better. The first fight took so much out of Frazier. Ali is kinda still Ali, sticking and moving. Joe just isn't the same.

All three fights were classics but after the Foreman fight Joe Frazier was never the same unfortunately George almost decapitated him lifting him off the ground with an uppercut sadly Joe continued as well as Ali . After the Foreman fight Ali should have retired that was his pinnacle. .

Interesting difference between this and the 1st fight between these 2 guys. In the first fight there was an experienced, no-nonsense referee named Arthur Mercante. He did a good job overall and he made sure to stop Ali from holding Frazier behind the head and clinching. As we all know, Frazier wore Ali down and got the best of him late. In my opinion, the fact that Ali had to fight nearly every minute of 15 rounds played a role in the outcome, as Frazier did his thing late when Ali slowed down, wasn't allowed to hold and was forced to stand and fight. This fight was only 12 rounds, which benefitted Ali more than Frazier. Aside from, or in addition to that, the referee was young and had only worked one fight as significant as this fight was, to that point in his career. A relative rookie referee in other words, regarding fights of this caliber. The difference between this referee and Arthur Mercante, the referee in their 1st fight, was a major factor in the difference in outcomes of the 2 fights, in my opinion. How could it not have been a major factor in Ali's favor, when he was allowed to hold at his convenience vs. never being allowed to hold in the previous fight? I counted that Ali held 37 times in the first 4 rounds of this fight. With a very rough estimate that 5 seconds passed each time he held, that equals a total of 3 full minutes wasted for doing what they came to do, to throw punches and fight. In effect, that reduced the amount of time available for Frazier to land punches by 1 round out of the 4 so far in the fight, or 25% of the overall time. That's not the only benefit that Ali got from holding. Most of the 37 times in 4 rounds when Ali held, he held behind the neck and pulled Frazier's head to his chest or pushed his head down. That worked to tire out Frazier and prevented him from throwing even one punch while being held in that manner. You can't throw much of anything when your head is held firmly like that. The timing of Ali holding was a factor as well. Ali threw a lot of punches in the first 4 rounds, landing a significant number and taking a rest when he needed it most by holding between each series of punching. Frazier took Ali's shots, but his turn rarely came to fire back because Ali grabbed him each time he came forward to throw punches. While the fight is taking place, none of these things are given much/any attention by the fans, most of which were Ali fans so they didn't care about Ali holding to begin with. I have to wonder if the choice of referee in this fight was a ploy by Ali's camp. It's easy to imagine that a young referee would be intimidated by the aura of Ali, to the degree that he would be hesitant to be strict regarding Ali holding Frazier. I've heard others critique this fight in the same way over the years, including Frazier himself. Joe scoffed at the outcome of this fight, dismissing it as a holding contest rather than a fight. Howard Cosell reinforced the idea that this referee was a ploy by the Ali camp, when he went way overboard introducing the referee before the action began. It was as if Cosell, a known ally of Ali over the years, was trying to influence fight fans regarding the abilities of the referee. The point being that we shouldn't get the idea that this young referee would be intimidated by Ali's presence and therefore be hesitant to be strict regarding Ali holding during the fight. You be the judge, listen to Cosell beginning at 1:32 as he takes 35 seconds praising the work and abilities of the referee, to the extent that he mentions how he positions himself during a fight so as to see everything going on and to have good overall control of the action. It came across to me as propaganda instead of a quick intro for the referee, in the manner in which it's usually done.

Not sure about some of the other comments about Ali putting a whooping on Frazier. If you watch closely most of Ali's punches missed due to Frazier's bob and weave. Most Ali's points are counter punches after he breaks off playing rope a dope. But during that time Frazier is scoring body shots. He did land more punches than Frazier but it was a dog fight from beginning to end.

Ali was in razor-sharp condition for this January 28th 1974 rematch he also fought a much better tactical boxing match remembering that it's boxing objective is hit and don't get hit. If Allie was in this type of razor-sharp of condition in March of 1971 Joe never wins that first Ali Frazier fight. However Ali only six months back from a four-year layoffs thought the Supreme Court of the United States might be taking away his freedom at the end of March 1971 so he felt he had to try to beat Joe after only being back for a few months after being off for four straight years. you can tell Muhammad Ali was in Tip-Top condition for this rematch and he fought a much smarter more technical fight and one going away. Ali won a minimum of seven rounds in Super Fight II, some scorecards had Ali winning 8 or 9 rounds of the 12. Joe only managed to win only four or five rounds at best!

I'm not a true Ali fan. Having watched a fair amount of heavyweight fights from all era, the 60's to the present, what one starts to appreciate about Ali is that in the later rounds after seemingly doing nothing but jab, dodge and hold, is how often he finds that flurry that actually takes his opponent out of the fight. It's not pretty, his dancing is almost obnoxious, but to have the power to knock out an opponent late is phenomenal.

He's not my favorite either I think his Era was a little over hyped and rather top heavy with Ali and Frazier being the only 2 that have top 10 qualifications..Foreman had not title reign and only 2 title defenses and fought alot of bums , Norton was good on certain nights but lost 7 times and twice in the 2nd round!...and then you had Bugner, chavalo, Cooper, young, Mathis sr., shavers and a cpl others but compared to 83' to 05' I think not even close. There was way more hall of famers, legit world Champs and top contenders than any other time period in history

The sport is called boxing and therefore you are an idiot to expect anything other than a boxing match. You don't go to a fencing match and expect the type of swashbuckling sword fight in the pirate movies you don't go to a boxing match and expect a back alley brawl or bar room brawl. The sport is called boxing the sweet science. Ali took boxing to another level the way Wilt Chamberlain Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Magic Johnson Larry Bird Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant and LeBron have brought basketball into a new level. The sport of boxing is hit your opponent as much as possible while not getting hit. Muhammad Ali was a master of hitting and not getting hit. It's extremely ignorant to cry and whine about a athlete being so Superior at the sport that he makes it a no contest.. between the 1960s Muhammad Ali when he never got hit and even the nineteen-seventies Ali when he got h i t more Muhammad Ali beat a total of 14 fighters who were good enough to wear the Undisputed or at least part of the World Heavyweight Championship belt. You don't fight any Fighters from his era or any era who came close to that and you don't find any fighter nowadays who has that type of quality of opposition. Ali fought 14 world champions and beat them all and except when Ali was washed up and suffering from early signs of Parkinson's every single fighter that managed to get a decision over Ali got beat in every rematch

To me, the second fight was no fight at all because Ali marred everything. Obviously still dazed and scared by the first fight, Ali fought with a lot of respect and fear for Frazier. He was scared of Frazier's punches, especially the left hook which explained why he was constantly holding Frazier throughout the fight. How he was not warned or get his points deducted for too much holding or get him disqualified was strange. If the rules of the game were followed, Frazier would have carried the day. It was clearly a robbery. My verdict: Frazier won the second fight and Ali lost.

Absolutely positively completely ignorant Clueless stupid. What an ignorant comment. The second fight wasn't really even very close and most ringside observers and more importantly the judges and referee had Muhammad Ali winning eight or nine of the 12 rounds against Joe. There were a few reasons. First Muhammad Ali after a 9-week training camp was in Tip-Top razor sharp condition for the second fight against Joe after training only 6 weeks for the first fight and it only being the third fight back after the government robbed him of his best 4 years. Even Joe Frazier's manager trainer Yancey yank Durham ADMITTED they wanted to fight Ali as soon as possible after the 4 years of the government robbed Ali from they wanted to get ALI early as possible in his comeback after the 4-year enforced layoff before Ali had a chance to get into razor sharp fighting trim. Joe's manager yank Durham said his and other managers he spoke to theory using a cliche was "always get the tiger when he's he's just out of the cage when his legs are stiff". The other factor is Ali Beyond being in much better fighting condition for the second fight Muhammad Ali also fought a much smarter fight instead of staying in the corners and brawling with with Joe as he did in the first . Muhammad Ali fought a much smarter fight when Joe would lead with his head or try to follow his punches with elbows or whenever Joe hit Muhammad Ali low Joe never got warned or had points taken away from him. So to come back Joe leading with his head and following his punches with elbows and hitting low Ali would grab Joe's head and walk Joe out into the middle of the ring where he could gain distance and take Joe apart from long range the sport is called boxing its nickname is the sweet science what do they mean by Sweet science? Ultimately it means whoever hits more and keeps the opponent from hitting them you hit your opponent more than he hits you and in the sport of boxing that gets you the victory Beyond almost knocking out or at least knocking Joe down at the end of the second round Muhammad Ali out punched Joe at least 3 to 1 and who thought Joe deserve to win that second fight needs to go and get his brain checked for psychological problems or at least have his bloodstream checked for hallucinogens

Joe had a slightly similar peekaboo boxing style to that of Tyson🤔, body shots finessed with left hook/upper cut, just that Tyson was that good✅, he packed powerful left&right hooks/upper cuts💪🏽, with exquisite speed & movement💯 Ali was a gentle beast😊, smart boxer😎, his jabs🥊were distinct👌🏽, that they bruised & hurt the opponents face🥴, round after round opponent goes to their corner, ice bag is utilized to reduce inflammation & blood is been wiped off their face🤕, tiring the opponent🥵, instilling fear & low self-esteem in opponent😵‍💫 #AliTheLegend❤
