I was working at a place called kings wood golf club in Surrey in 08/09 after moving to England from South Africa and there was a charity event held there and Sir Henry cooper walked in and asked for a pint. I said the pint is free as long as I get to shake the hand that knocked Ali down. Legendary man. Signed a piece of paper for me that I still have.

Cooper is very underrated, one of the best left hooks in the history of boxing. I’d say even better than Joe Frazier’s. He really used to dig that thing in hard and fast, it was a thing of beauty. He had one problem though… his eyes used to cut really easily and most of his losses were due to doctor stoppages because of cuts. If he would’ve knocked down Ali just a little earlier he would’ve won. Ali only comes back around just in time for the next round and Angelo Dundee even tried to cut the gloves to get more time, if it happened in the middle of the round Ali would’ve been finished and he might never have become known as “the greatest”.

I remember as a child, watching this live on tv, I think the whole country was tuned in to watch the fight. Henry was a full time greengrocer (a term you rarely hear today), but also a decent boxer. @@hstar2959 Cooper wasn't even seriously hurt or knocked down, it was stopped due to a cut. Which isn't a problem for Ali's record or anything, that's a legitimate stoppage. But let's not live in a fantasy land where Ali "nearly killed" him. For that, go watch the Cleveland Williams fight. If Cooper hadn't been cut, this fight very well could have been one of Ali's most narrow victories and the possibility of defeat was very real. Yes, he went very aggressive in the fifth round, but you could also see his reflexes on defense still weren't as sharp as before the knockdown. His intermittent clowning in the fight had put him in serious danger and he knew it, that's why he came out in round 5 like he did. As for why people say Cooper should have won, it comes down to the interval between round 4 and 5. Ali's corner has been accused based on film of using smelling salts and intentionally ripping Ali's right glove to delay the start of round 5, both of which could - and in the case of the smelling salts, absolutely would - result in disqualification. The latter of these accusations Angelo Dundee openly admitted years later, saying he knew he needed to buy time. If none of this had been done and Ali had been sent out as is on time, that could have at the very least made round 5 more dangerous for him. Would Cooper have won? Who knows, I say probably not, Ali would have taken a different strategy if stull hurt and stayed away. So the fight goes another round or two. But the cut on Cooper was severe, odds are it still stops on cuts later. But Ali could have been is serious trouble, we'll never know, and what Dundee did was profoundly low class.

The late Peter Wilson, a boxing columnist who'd seen them all from before Joe Louis, said of this fight that he thought Clay, as he was then, could have stopped Cooper any time he wished, but "Five he predicted, and five it was to be." And sure enough, you can see he's carrying the Brit somewhat before round five, getting complacent enough to be dumped on his arse. I say had he been dropped in the middle of the ring one minute into the round, he'd have still beaten Cooper. that would have brought the animal, the real dog, out of Ali: and if 'Enery wasn't cut, he'd have taken a hellacious beating. I think he's one boxer who should be grateful for his tissue-paper epidermis, in hindsight. Had he beaten Clay, unlikely, but had he, he would have been next in line to face Liston. Did I hear some years ago that his manager, Jimmy Wicks, wanted no part of Liston? If true, wise man. The film for Liston-Cooper would have been banned for under-18s and carried a health warning for everybody else. Because it would have been pugilistic manrape.
