Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier talk trash in 1971 press conference before 'Fight of the Century'

Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier cause a ruckus at a press event leading up to the The Fight of the Century at Madison Square Garden, which took place on March 8, 1971. This was filmed on March 06, 1971 in New York. Among the reporters covering the event is ABC's Howard Cosell.

As someone who grew up during this era, the one thing I can tell you all...we took *none* of this for granted. We knew the magnitude of these events and would say to each other (as young adults) "We'll tell our grandchildren about this." i.e. It was not lost...

Ali and Joe Frazier were never friends, they could have conversations, but it always come down to a competition or rivalry. When Ali was stripped of his title, Joe Frazier would give him money, Ali would jump the vehicle and turn on Joe Frazier, the promotion, Butch Lewis, would witness this same thing. Not to say Joe Frazier was not a good fighter, Ali and Frazier is a huge feud and rivalry. I will give it to Joe in the first fight for having great determination and stamina, even though he ended up in the hospital for a month after the "Fight of the Century". Muhammad Ali had a cracked jaw with a hour visit to the hospital. Ali/Frazier rivalry brought on, Leonard/ Hearns, Bowe/Holyfield, Pryor/Arguello, Gatti/Ward. The non stop action fights.....

@@abduljaleelwilliamson679 lmao, he did not almost knock out Frazier! Frazier got pummeled against Foreman, went down over 6 times and still got up every time. It took the referee stepping in for Joe to stop. And Foreman is way more powerful than Ali! Also in the third fight, his health issues had caught up to him by then, kidney issues, liver problems, back issues, genetic high blood pressure, and blindness in one eye were all issues he dealt with from as early as his amateur fights. Frazier never actually had a full and healthy training camp. Also, Ali said in his biography that if Futch didn’t stop the fight he was going to quit. Some people say that he wouldn’t have and that it’s an exaggeration but it really isn’t. He was telling his corner to cut the gloves but his coach looked at Futch and Frazier arguing and he told Ali “no”. Futch ended up telling Frazier “Son, no one is gonna forget what ya did here tonight! Listen to me!” And Frazier put his head down and said “alright”. Frazier was wanting to go out there and kill him despite his good eye being swollen shut. If he wasn’t going to stop at then, then nothing would.

What a colorful time in boxing. Today it’s depressing. Guys don’t have this character. Everything’s phony and contrived. This is classic. These guys talked at the press conference, at the weigh in, at the pre fight instructions, and during the fight. And the fight lived up to the hype. Greatest sporting event in history.

Frazier had something to prove in this fight with Muhammad Ali, he needed to cement his championship status. This is why Frazier trained hard and got himself trim 206 lbs. If he had done so with Foreman he would’ve been conditioned to weave away from Foreman’s punches and land those body blows he was infamous for. Foreman was capable of knocking him out off course but it would’ve been a different fight all together. By the time he faces Foreman in 73, Ali 74 & 75 & Foreman once more in 76 he allowed his desire and hunger to be champion to slip in his training. This is why I base my standard of Frazier from 68 to 71.

Ern C ...Ali's confidence wasn't anywhere near shaken. However, The Greatest did clown around during the bout, took Smokin' Joe for granted and lost that fight. Furthermore, the odds were against Ali since he became the objector regarding the war in Vietnam. The white conservatives, were still hateful and cruel to The Greatest, never gave him a chance, PERIOD!!! Frazier didn't defeat Ali unanimously. He delivered that knockdown which gave him that slight edge, which was a wake up call for Ali. Afterwards, it was Smokin' Joe who unquestionably looked like the loser. The photographs was the proof in the pudding. The latter experienced complications from Ali's punches. The latter walked with just a swollen right jaw.the

@@brucescott4261 This is nonsense. Joe pounded Ali relentlessly for 15 rounds and won easily a unanimous decision. Credit Ali to this day for not being KO'd on those murderous left hands in the 15th round. But this was Joe's shining moment, he whooped Ali in every way possible, this night was his. Ali, a great warrior and champion, had plenty of shining moments prior and to come after this night.
