Wow, those buttons are gorgeous and thank you so much for all the history behind them, It's absolutely fascinating! I love the Dickens history too regarding the 'Blacking' bottle, though the portrait brought to life was a bit creepy lol. I believe the blacking was also used on cooking ranges and applied by the poor scullery maids early in the morning before the cook was awake. Great finds and a wonderful video! 😀💗 x

What wonder unusual finds this time!! It’s really astounding how some thin pieces of glass managed to survive being pushed and bounced around for a hundred years or more! And the history behind the pieces. It takes you to the places they were made and the people that touched them last, gives me chills! It was very tuff back then, it took tuff people to survive it. In the present day….you girls stay safe!! Take care. Happy Samhain!!

Oh wow, the story of the beggar was so touching...I hope he made it back home and was welcomed back by his people...good on that magistrate to offer the money for him to get home and have a meal on the way. Justice at its finest ❤

Like the Prodigal son in the Bible making his way back home. The magistrate was very kind to pay the beggar man's fare and give him a bit extra for a meal on the way.

Those wild edaberries are very good for fighting colds and keeps you from getting sick from the flu i drive around picking them and boil them with cinnamon and nutmeg with honey eda berry elixir is exspensive here so i make my own its very tasty to.

You have found a few new interesting items. Always enjoy a trip down in a hole to finds little treasures. 🌻🐕🥰🇺🇸

The ceramic pots, ink-refill bottles and today’s blacking bottle are wonderful finds. The stories behind the child labour is sad, though, and the conditions they often worked in, just awful. I’m so glad that you found more buttons…they really are interesting.

Yes, the flat glass object was probably used to mix paint ingredients. Great find!!

This was a great history class today girls .Those buttons really survived well didn’t they ,and were in good condition considering.. they were buried. The glass tower of solid glass could well have been used for mixing and smoothing the paints together with the binders . I have only seen it done once and thought ,nope I would rather buy my paints already done as it takes ages lol!..Thanks for taking us with you on this adventure..Love n Light 🥰

Thank you for yet another delightful clip My ears pricked up when you mentioned Thurso as my great grandmother was born there, there is a castle ( fortified house really) called Brimms castle, it is mostly a pile of stones in the grass but it is my heritage.

@@releasingendorphins232 oh that’s cool 🙂 a car boot is essentially an outdoor flea market/yard sale. Mostly people selling household things for dirt cheap that they want to get rid of like clothes and decor, as well as dealers that sell antiques/vintage or brand new items.

Wow so many lovely finds and so much amazing history behind those buttons. There is so much to mention but It's surprising that some of those glass or pottery items survive intact. Thank you for sharing and see you next week.

@@NorthernMudlarks Hi Gail and Alex. I wanted you both to know that I love your content. This week's finds were very interesting and had loads of variety. To use your turn of phrase Alex, you discovered pipemageddon rex there at the bottle dump. Those new [old] buttons you found were really interesting and striking in their details and the historical information was interesting. If I may I'd like to make an observation and a suggestion about the narration of the cleaned up finds. I had my volume up as high as possible and could hardly hear either of you when you were describing your most interesting finds. The volume was fine when you were bottle digging and I had no problems hearing you then, just not when you were describing the buttons and the blacking bottle. Perhaps it would help if the music in the background whilst you're narrating was a bit lower. It tends to drown out your voices and I do so love listening to your accents when you're narrating. Best wishes to you both from here in New Bern, North Carolina. I know you're going to hit 100K subscribers very soon! 🎃🎃🎆✨🎉

Hello my greetings to you two, I remember using a shale in the 1960's. At the end of those years they became artificial shales, a hard layer of carboard. Then came the inkwell with pen that I still like to write with.

I've been watching your channel since you first started and really enjoy the two of you. It's always fun to watch collabs too! The historical information you are able to find and share makes the finds much more interesting. Maybe you can do another ten things about us for a Christmas video or a Christmas craft video?

Hi Alex and Gail - I inherited a similar button to the one shown at 9:26 from a great uncle. I though it was a more recent button, but am glad it's not. Mine is made of brass. Also, I think that small lid with rose bud would fit that small ceramic jar. I love these videos, and the history that you provide.

Wow, what a mixed bag of different finds on this lark ladies. I love the links you do with the history. Its a weird way of bringing the past back in a random way. A way of remembering how raw living was. The way people lived and died, way back when. That moving portrait was quite spooky. I thought i was seeing things at first. 😂 That made the story all the more real. I thought he was quite a handsome fellow. I bet he was quite a catch back in the day. That slate that was found was amazing. In that it was still so whole. Its always a surprise to see what lays beneath. Thanks for sharing your larks. We love them. X

I am so envious of your lovely finds and also the beautiful elderberries that you photographed. I would be picking those berries to make elderberry syrup which is lovely mixed with rose hip syrup and honey for coughs and sore throats. I have a hard time finding elderberries for picking. What a lovely lot of finds today. The hat pin was lovely with its white swirl and so many pipe bowls. I have two of those blacking pots that oh dug up here in Devon. So whats going in the window of wonders this week? Loved the little inkwell and more buttons!! Keep well you two and stay safe.

I would dig that area into buckets then use a screen to sift out the goodies. I would love to sit and dig through that for hours and hours.

This week I vote for the Singer bottle for the window.

I wonder if the buttons are from someone's button tin... I inherited my Nan's tin who in turn had inherited it from her mum! I spent many hours as a child sorting through all the wonderful 'things' that were in the the tin and secretly although I'm in my 60's I still sit down and examine all the little treasures in the 'button tin'.

Love the history of those buttons

I must say that the boot black bottle was my favorite find of yours. My family came from the Eaton Socon area of England before the revolution. I am probably related to Mr. Day somehow.

I have a Singer bottle of similar design that I found in an antique store, tinted purple from the sun! Cool find :))
