MUDBATH IN TASSIE! - Roothy

I did heaps of trips to Tasmania over the years with an assortment of crews and sponsors but there was only once I took my personal family truck - the mighty Mustard, called 'Elvis' by the Handbrake, an HJ471983 Troop Carrier. This is the truck that our three kids grew up having family holidays in. Originally bought from the original owner with a mere 250,000km on the clock, the old 47 was, and still is, one of the neatest 40 Series units in the country. As bought it came with both the original factory options - a tacho and a Fairy Overdrive, a third gear stick that split each of the four speeds by about 500 revs. The difference this made both on road and on the tracks was incredible.By the time this was filmed Mustard had ARB air lockers back and front, a turbo added to the 2H motor, full mandrel exhaust and I'd worked over the suspension to give it a couple of inches of lift but more importantly plenty of soft travel,I took Mustard because Milo was off the road and deadlines meant there was no choice. Years later, for 4WD Action's 200th issue, I took it on another filming trip through the Simpson Desert - this time with Karen and the two boys along. As the kids grew up and got their own licences and swags, Mustard increasingly spent more time in the shed. After meeting a beaut young family at the OCKA event - three young kids and only a SWB 40 to fit them! - we decided it was time she had a new home. Jay talked me into selling her but we still stay in touch and I'm always happy to see photos of this old girl doing for his family what it did for mine - letting them grow up free in the best country on earth.A little tip here, unless you’re traveling with locals, I suggest buying a copy of Chris Boden’s excellent ‘4WD tracks in Tasmania’ book. Taking a copy of this little bible along is almost as good as having Chris sit next to you pointing the way. Tassie is a bit tough in places and no place for people with no off-road experience. While it’s not pure lockers country, you should be carrying a compliment of recovery gear and be experienced enough to use it. Nothing beats having company along for the drive because it’s rare you’ll see anyone else on most tracks. Experienced drivers wouldn’t be too worried about tackling it on their own but I’d point out that in real terms, you’re as isolated here as you would be anywhere. Leave the drinking until you’ve done the driving and make sure you’re fully equipped. While a stock vehicle could get through a bit of extra clearance and some bar work is damned good insurance for most of the better tracks. About the only thing you don’t need here is long range tanks or permits! Although the latter situation is changing as Australia gets gated...You might need some gum boots though because there’s plenty of water everywhere down here. From rivers and creeks crossing the beaches to lagoons left over from the last downpour this is one place where drought isn’t likely! In most cases you won’t need to walk the crossings unless there’s been some unusual rain or you can’t see more than a hint of Toyota roof and no tracks out the other side! Use your common sense, it’s something that’s still allowed in Tasmania! While the best travelling months are mid summer in Tassie don’t expect the weather to hold any time of year. Be prepared with some warm clothes and a couple of changes to allow for rum spills at night too.

Having seen the devastation and also the incredible recovery powers of Mother Nature over sixty years of travelling, man's toys are really puny in bush the scale of this. I agree, don;t cause damage if you can avoid it, but a bit of ploughing will see that track go bush in a season.
