CHAOS IN COFFS - Roothy

Coffs Harbor? Should it be called the 4WD capital of Australia? Hmmm, that's a big call in a country so huge and with so many wonderful adventures to have but following the old network of trails up behind the Coffs coast is bloody amazing to say the least. I did plenty of dvds with various people along for the drive around the hinterland over the years but this was one of my favourites. And I reckon you'll see why - the bush was insane, the tracks incredible and the mighty 350 Chev powered Red Truck 40 Series ploughed through like the beast she was!
Tell you what, those pioneers were tough bastards. The hills behind the beach are some of the steepest and most densely forested this side of Sydney’s Blue Mountains. Yet that’s where the timber and gold was so armed with little more than banana knives and spades they hacked their way through country so wild even the aborigines avoided it.
Rain, and torrential downpours at that, is a bit of an issue in the back hills of Coffs. Combine soft soils, steep hills and valleys and buckets of water and pretty soon you’ve got some of the most eroded tracks around.
There’s what’s left of log shoots and pioneer prospecting tracks all through these hills and they make for some of the most exciting driving anywhere in Australia. Some have been graded up as forestry access tracks which means there’s usually a ‘safe’ way in or out, but for the more adventurous four wheel driver, these are just transport sections to the tough stuff. You could get seriously lost out here but in the old days, as long as a man had his rifle, his dog and some luck he could stay bush for months.
For the 4wd'er it's all rainforest, rocky tracks, mud holes, wet and greasy clay hills, mud holes, washed out rutted climbs and, err, more mud holes. Within a few kilometres of our kick off point we dived straight in to some dense rainforest and began climbing a track that was more suited to goats than fourbies. Check it out -

Back when 4wd action was GOOD!
This is great stuff John thanks for putting it up . So good to see reasonably affordable rigs and not be flogged to death with promotion. And no camper trailers..haha 👍👍👍👍

No skull dragging a flaming camper trailer through the scrub! $30,000 waste of money, might as well attach an anchor to the back of the car.

If you look closely, the tray from the red truck is from a trailer
Now my Friday is made!
Keep them coming Roothy we like to see these and can't watch them any other way.

These old ones are so much better than the new 4wd action episodes. Thanks for sharing all of these Roothy! Loving every one you upload.
Just blimmin awesome John presenting these clips .., parts of coffs inland I've never known and have been there in the past as well as Port Macquarie close by .Nothing comes close to that here in NZ.Hope they get that rail line up and running a sure draw card.

On ya mate - see you there one day!
Good old days
Better episodes back then, than....(well done Roothy)
Nice to see this. My great grandfather worked on the railway line putting it in. I also travelled on the line as a baby, it would be nice if the railway could be restored.
That's experience when you keep a calm head despite the car almost tipping over. Roothy just calmly backs it up out of trouble. Learning a lot from these videos. Thank you all.
Unbelievable track......I’m adding it to my bucket list!!!
Beer and classic episode time!
Loved this. Nice to see some fairly stock vehicles having so much fun as well. We still get the Y61 here in the UAE (petrol of course!). Would love to take mine on a route like this.
Respect Mother Nature! Go explore! Have a look! Just take your rubbish with you!😁
38:14 This is what peak form looks like.
Love it

YESSS im set now
Great to see some back to the real deal 4wd stuff. As far as John's comments on the floods etc, all is true, the problem is the small minded percentage who do not do the right thing. They spoil it for the rest of us, they should be weeded out and called out for what they are and we know what they are.
The dog is having fun
Love these could you pls upload the other coffs one in big red when shauno was in the good ole 60
Really love the sound of the red truck. Makes me wonder where it is now... and why doesn't Milo 2 have a V8... LOL

problem with the prado, was the tires, low profile, plus,he got stopped. too much info.
what happened after 24:24? roothy make it?
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY
3 жыл бұрын
Yep, she got through - rough but ready!
that red v8,should be able to run 35",if it has at least 4.11 diffs. toyotas usually have 4.3 ?. when you let tires down, you obviously lose 3" of ground clearance. plus, leafs on top of diff have less curve,so more travel. IE,hilux. longer the leaf the better. but cant beat coils for ride. that prado,is for the city, too short, too low,no room. do not use traction control in sand or mud.
I knew patrol's were gona be good for something eventually

Is there ever any concern about all those poisonous critters and crocs when wheeling there? In Canada all we have to worry about are bears and cougars, and they run away.
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY
3 жыл бұрын
Funny - we don't worry about our critters because we know their behaviour too, and nearly everything clears out with a bit of smoke off the fire at night. Bears tho??? Arrrgggghhhhhh.....

in cairns qld, theres plants that will kill you, more than snakes, spiders. you watch ''ave'',boltr. used to watch fred williams, dirt every day, till motor trend got it,. along with finnigan, matts recovery,& ultimate adventures.. most 4x4 shows here are for adds/products, & more of a reality show than real 4x4ing..they all promote there company more than any info you need.
