4WD GREAT DIVIDING RANGE - Roothy

Want to go four wheel driving and camping just outside of Sydney? Roothy definitely knows the best tracks and camping grounds. Welcome to the Great Dividing Range, where there's plenty of mountains, creeks, trees and wonderful places to camp. This time around. recognising how many family people love their camper trailers, we're all towing trailers - wow, talk about maximum comfort in the middle of nowhere!
I'm towing with the Red Truck and by this trip Big Red's got about 10,000km on the new motor, with about a fifth of that seriously off-road. How’s old Red doing?
Bloody brilliantly actually. There are so many good things coming together here it’d be easier to mention the bad things first! I think the wife works on that principle actually, she’s always got a list of things I do wrong on hand…
Righto, Red’s bloody noisy on the road courtesy of absolutely no sound proofing, open window air conditioning, more rattles than baby Paris and a whine from the transfer that’d get an alcoholic excited. Yes there’s the throaty rumble coming from Cookie’s ferret hole sized exhaust too but who complains about a V8? None of that matters to me, she’s actually a bit quieter than Milo anyway…
With more than twice the power and torque!
The 350 Chevy feeding through Jodie’s automatic amounts to seemless power. Bump the throttle at the lights and Red surges forward as fast as most of the little toy cars and you hardly notice the engine climbing and dropping revs between gear changes. Thanks to the Mark’s Gearmaster transfer we’ve got an extra 10% in high range so she’s pulling an effortless 2600rpm at 100km/h. That makes for 110km/h cruising and the old girl rockets past the trucks with the sort of speed you get from a decent passenger car.
That performance is matched by the brilliant slotted rotor disc brakes up front, part of a 60 Series braking conversion using Terrain Tamer discs and pads that transformed the whole driveability. Off road all this motor and stopping power could be lethal if it wasn’t for the Gearmasters again - boy am I impressed with this product! - which, with 44% lower low range gearing makes for total control, whether you’re clambering up a rock face or dropping down a gulley.
Really helps when you're towing a trailer!

I remember the first time i saw this video years ago. The next weekend i had the 4wd packed and did the tracks mentioned in this video. Awesome drive particularly if a bit of rain has fallen.

Ahh the not so long ago days where campertrailers took a week to set-up and nearly as long to pack away. Thank God they improved from these pole riddled boat anchors. Either way, love the episodes John.

Noticed something i gather you wouldn't do now days is using the standard tie down points on a Nissan patrol as a snatch point as they can bend.

Great trip, Roothy, but one thing mystifies me, why dont you take the "Handbrake" with you more? I saw your series bushbashing your way to Darwin, Karen went with you and she seemed to love it. Keep up the good work and keep the vids rolling as this is the only 4WDing I can do now.
