I did muay Thai championships in Germany in the 80ies. 82kgs. No fighter did this. One hard low kick can end a fight. I have done it.

I mean this definitely isn't true. Fighters often do this. This is a legitimate technique. Usually it's used in 1 of 3 scenarios: 1) Where an opponent has demonstrated a bad habit of dropping their hands when throwing a low kick. In this case you trade the kick for an essentially guaranteed knock out. 2) As a last second contingency when you know the kick is definitely going to land. In that scenario the last ditch defensive method to mitigate damage is indeed to turn out & weight the leg sightly while tensing the quadricep. 3) In instances where you're able to cut the distance and get inside the power arch of the opponent's kick. This appears to be what's happening in the video. We should also note two additional things: a) This is a short clip and it's most likely that this technique is being taught as a disaster contingency, not as the primary method of checking kicks. b) This might be an MMA gym, in which case this strategy is particularly valid and seen more often, given that there are many MMA fighters who learn MT as a secondary or tertiary style and that MMA in general has pretty wide weight classes, making the move particularly common in matches where competitors have a size differential.

Read more carefully. *_"You don't stay that close waiting to get smashed"_* You do when you're the one doing the smashing. You shouldn't hang around punching range unnecessarily but obviously you must enter that range if you intend on punching. She is trading a kick for a hand combination. The proper procedure is indeed to plant hard. *_"You don't look down when you low kick"_* You do when you're demonstrating. It's permissible in this case because the class's eyes often follow your own and you're exaggerating for demonstrative purposes. You're also going at like 0% so sometimes it helps to double check your leg is connecting at the right place. Also you do sometimes look down in a fight but that's not relevant for this discussion.

Had a female black belt tell me to uppercut a vertical surface because she disagreed with how I was throwing it while I was shadow boxing. I didn't want to be rude but was like wtf do you want me to do here?? It clearly had never occurred to her how an uppercut was intended to hit in an actual fight.

she is trying to go dutch! fighters like Andy Souwer or Nicky Holzken barely block leg kicks the thai way. they step into the kick to cut it short as they precede to punch the shit out of the body and the head before the kicking foot drops to the ground bulldog style finishing with hard low or a knee. classic example being the Diamond. for that u need serious leg conditioning, timing, power and guts!

This is a legit Countering sequence, it’s not blocking but more of tanking and firing back immediately. A lot of Dutch Kickboxers and Muay Thai Fighters use this kind of setup for countering aggressive fighters who aren’t good at getting there hands back to their head.

Just to clarify for the comment section, that really is how you"block" a low kick. When you plant and weigh down the leg that's being kicked, it's much less painful then a leg that is light on the ground. But I would not disagree that checking or avoiding the kick is preferable; this is just the easiest of the low kick defenses.

well this is valid, we call it eating the kick at my gym. and if you eat the kick you have to instantly respond with punches. we typically do cross hook cross no low kick at the end. if it was ending with a hook it would make more sense but the positioning isn’t great with ending with a cross.

I did muay Thai championships in Germany in the 80ies. 82kgs. No fighter did this. One hard low kick can end a fight. I have done it.

I mean this definitely isn't true. Fighters often do this. This is a legitimate technique. Usually it's used in 1 of 3 scenarios: 1) Where an opponent has demonstrated a bad habit of dropping their hands when throwing a low kick. In this case you trade the kick for an essentially guaranteed knock out. 2) As a last second contingency when you know the kick is definitely going to land. In that scenario the last ditch defensive method to mitigate damage is indeed to turn out & weight the leg sightly while tensing the quadricep. 3) In instances where you're able to cut the distance and get inside the power arch of the opponent's kick. This appears to be what's happening in the video. We should also note two additional things: a) This is a short clip and it's most likely that this technique is being taught as a disaster contingency, not as the primary method of checking kicks. b) This might be an MMA gym, in which case this strategy is particularly valid and seen more often, given that there are many MMA fighters who learn MT as a secondary or tertiary style and that MMA in general has pretty wide weight classes, making the move particularly common in matches where competitors have a size differential.

Read more carefully. *_"You don't stay that close waiting to get smashed"_* You do when you're the one doing the smashing. You shouldn't hang around punching range unnecessarily but obviously you must enter that range if you intend on punching. She is trading a kick for a hand combination. The proper procedure is indeed to plant hard. *_"You don't look down when you low kick"_* You do when you're demonstrating. It's permissible in this case because the class's eyes often follow your own and you're exaggerating for demonstrative purposes. You're also going at like 0% so sometimes it helps to double check your leg is connecting at the right place. Also you do sometimes look down in a fight but that's not relevant for this discussion.

Had a female black belt tell me to uppercut a vertical surface because she disagreed with how I was throwing it while I was shadow boxing. I didn't want to be rude but was like wtf do you want me to do here?? It clearly had never occurred to her how an uppercut was intended to hit in an actual fight.

It will ricochet if ur trying to kick towards to knee if u kicked on the side of the leg it wont ricochet as easily. Reason is its harder to drive in the opponents leg when the strongest part of it is ur direction if you know what i mean

All she did was take the leg kick, which can work yeah. But against someone who can kick HARD and can throw a lot of kicks. You’re gonna be hurtin after that match.

Way to single out her physical appearance for no reason. It's a training drill. Kicking each other in the thigh is good conditioning, and timing the thigh "flick" is also good practice.

1.Don't take kicks if you don't have to. 2. If you are to slow, counter 3. Don't step back across ur self when kicking, step out slightly.
You can def counter a leg kick by leaning into it. It's not ideal but if the angle is right it can work.

she is trying to go dutch! fighters like Andy Souwer or Nicky Holzken barely block leg kicks the thai way. they step into the kick to cut it short as they precede to punch the shit out of the body and the head before the kicking foot drops to the ground bulldog style finishing with hard low or a knee. classic example being the Diamond. for that u need serious leg conditioning, timing, power and guts!

This is a legit Countering sequence, it’s not blocking but more of tanking and firing back immediately. A lot of Dutch Kickboxers and Muay Thai Fighters use this kind of setup for countering aggressive fighters who aren’t good at getting there hands back to their head.

Just to clarify for the comment section, that really is how you"block" a low kick. When you plant and weigh down the leg that's being kicked, it's much less painful then a leg that is light on the ground. But I would not disagree that checking or avoiding the kick is preferable; this is just the easiest of the low kick defenses.

well this is valid, we call it eating the kick at my gym. and if you eat the kick you have to instantly respond with punches. we typically do cross hook cross no low kick at the end. if it was ending with a hook it would make more sense but the positioning isn’t great with ending with a cross.
