MTT EP8 4 Cheap 3650 Motors Tested Surpass VS Gool RC

Ғылым және технология

Here are the results all together for all motors tested in the video. The Rated number from the spec sheet will be on the left, followed by the number i have measured on the right.
Gool RC 3650 4300KV@£15.99
Rated Measured Difference
4300KV 4275KV -25KV
2.7A 7.4A 4.7A
Gool RC 3650 5200KV@£18.79
5200KV 5090KV -110KV
3.7A 7.1A 3.4A
Surpass Hobby Classic 5900KV@£19.43
5900KV 5812KV -88KV
5.2A 4.7A -0.5A
Surpass Hobby KK series 6900KV@£19.68
6900KV 6858KV -42KV
5.4A 4.8A -0.6A
None of these motors managed to hit or exceed their rated spec in terms of real KV. However they were all close enough to be considered ok, the analyser state and accuracy of +/- 3% so i would regard anything within 3% to be ok.
Clearly the two surpass motors were much better when it came to their amperage. They came in under spec which is good because the lower amperage shows they are more efficient and produce less heat.
On the Gool side things were not so cool. I felt the 4300KV is much louder and nowhere near as smooth as it should be, while the 5200KV version had a more reasonable sound level, it still fell short of the higher KV surpass motors. They both used much high current than the spec sheet says and the 5200KV motor was already warm after just this short test. It is quite funny considering it was the only one that came with a "warning hot" label :D.
Even though these motors tested were not directly comparable If you are looking at these motors on ebay, I would choose the surpass motors over the GCool motors. Especially if the are the same price.

    Thanks for the video test. On brand new motors I found that if they are a little noisy it's usually the bearing is a little stuck due possibly surface rust but most likely the adhesive resedue they use to glue on the permenate magnets during manufacturing. With all new motors I always spray a little brake or contact cleaner on each bearing run it for a few seconds then put a drop of oil on one end hold right side up run for 10 second the flip over and do the other side. Always seems to imidatly take the vibration out straight away and run much smoother/quieter and would probably help it achieve a tiny bit more rpm too 👍🏻

    Interesting video, thanks for posting. Out of interest, approx what effect on amps would occur with the motor under load in the car with wheels/tyres etc? I'm guessing that 5-8 amps you measured with no load will be multiplied many times over?

  • @LawrenceTimme

    Yeah the load when the motors are running will be much much higher. It depends on the weight of the car, the weight of the drive line components and the gearing as well. Most of these motors are rated at 60-100A maximum, but on moderate gearing on 2s they'll be more like 30-60a.

    You need to put a load on the motors to have their amp draw to spike. They have no load other than the initial rotation of the rotor in this type of testing. You'll have to use a voltage meter and to have the motor in a vehicle, either have over sized tires on a bench or hold the vehicle while you throttle up. If it's a car put it on a loose surface and do a burn out. If it's a boat, hold it in place and have the prop force the water around it. Same idea with a plane but in the air obviously. You can hook up the voltmeter to measure the amps drawn from the motor or even the entire system depending where you connect to. Cheers

    Testing these motors under a load or actually installed in an appropriate vehicle will give you more realistic results as to the quality of the motor. The Surpass motors are not that good of quality but they work okay as long as you don't push them to the limit. Over gearing or running a prop that's too big will burn up these motors fairly quickly. I still buy them because they're cheap, but consider them disposable as I do.

    Not neccisarily. Motor amp draw changes significantly under load. It just means the motor doesn't struggle to move it's own weight. I think higher KV motors use thinner motor windings which may make them lighter and easier to turn. Im not an electrician so I could be wrong.

    @@LawrenceTimme Yes usually all the higher Kv motor are Delta winds with the Y pattern winds mostly being used to create low kv motors since less winds are required to achieve low KV value Also because it's hard to make a motor have an exact KV ie an extra or even half a wind may drop the KV below what they where trying to achieve so instead they may use Y windings because using a cirtian amount of Y windings on a particular motor may achieve a specific KV they where hoping to achieve. Also all these motors are closed can so they timing would probably be set to zero as to allow equal rotation speeds for each direction of rotation.

    Good video-the 4300KV motor sounded immediately like the bearings are shot. Much of the db is from bearing noise on all these motors. I have always thought GoolRC and Surpass were from the same factory, but definitely prefer Surpass stuff, it seems more solid. Goolrc motors as with a few other motor brands are made in the Surpass motor. Sharing alot of the same "casing" (I would say amateur although in this contex the meaning would be confusing 😂) as for the internals and design measurements I'm guessing they are made to manufacture specifications or perhaps use an old Surpass Hobby design. Eaither way yes, I would always just get the Surpass Hobby as I would assume they would have a little better quality when making motors for themselves then their competitors. If you want to try more surpass hobby motors , there is quite alot of different product ranges. For budget I would say their platinum line is a a good one with a few improvement over the classic line such as larger bearings for motor size, ribbed design for better cooling also the leads and plugs are better too, for example a kk series 2845 will use 3.5mm plugs whilst a platinum series will use 4mm plugs. Also rocket is their more premium brand making a few lines of sensored 2 pole (all 1/10 race motors are 2 pole) class leading 540 race motors, 4 pole 1/8 scale sensored race motors. As well as a bunch of sensorless car and boat motors too. Also surpass also make some budget blue can sensored 540 motors and 1/8 scale orange can sensored motors too.

    @Lawrence Timme yes as everything you have is correct, but i had nor have any intentions on runing a 3650 can size motor on a 12+ pound monster truck, i was kinda of sharing a particular odd size/Voltage brushless motor as ive seen you have ability to test brushless motors without any need of installing into a vehicle, but also just realized you test kv output of a motor and that wont determine if a motor with gearing and moving the vehicle its installed in can take voltage its being rated at, any 3650 motor thats known of at max runs on 3s and thats probably everything under 3800kv, but First-time ive seen a 3650 size brushless motor with ability to handle anything more than 3s, which was my reasoning for commenting on your channel 😉 So yes im aware of weight and size limitations of a 3650kv and doesn't make any since to be wanting to install into a 1/8 size vehicle where i have currently 4268 2200kv motor on it .

  • @fabianrudzewski9027

    @fabianrudzewski9027

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@harynian what??? In your example, torque should be halved, if you don't push current to the moon. And if you do, you'd get way more power and probably smoke the motor. Which is only logical, since the 6000kv has less turns to get that KV, but a coil with less turns at the same current generates less fieldstrength, which directly translates to less torque. I once threw a 3000kv motor in place of a 2000kv one without changing anything else. Drew A LOT of current and still performed worse in acceleration. Had to gear it down considerably, to make use of the increased rpm.

  • @harynian

    @harynian

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@fabianrudzewski9027 Please, calm down. Question was simple: "Does lower kv make more torque", so answer is simple too: "no". Relating to my example: You have to know more about motor specification. 3650 800W 3000kv is rated for 16 V 50 A and 3650 800W 6000kv is rated for 8 V 100 A. Relating to the question: If you switch 6000 kv to the 3000 kv, with the same 8 V battery, you will get half of the torque. If you change motor to 3000 kv and battery to 16 V, you will get the same torque. You cant use 16 V for 6000 kv, because you will burn the motor. - a lot of people change motor to the higher kv to have more power and speed, because they use 2S battery and 2S is better for high kv motor - a lot of people have low kv motor and change 2S battery to 3-4S for more power and speed, because low kv motor needs more volts Brushless motor torque is calculated only from kv and current. Less kv = more torque, more current = more torque, but less kv = less current and you can check it in every motor specification. Summary: if you change motor 6000 kv 8 V 100 A to the 3000 kv 16 V 50 A, you will have half of the kv (more torque) and half of the current (less torque). Torque output remains the same in this situation. Relating to the coils: Yes, you are right. More coils = more torque, but only when current is unchanged. Unfortunately, more coils = coils are thinner = less current can flow. Tips: if you want to have more torque: - use as much volts as your motor can handle (look specification) - use motor with kv, which have max rated voltage as your battery - change motor to the bigger one Note: evey brushless motor is not empty inside, they are full of coils, no matter if they are thinn (many coils) or thick (few coils) and coils have their specified current resistance. You just cant build "much" stronger motor with the same size, you cant cheat the physics. The true way to have stronger motor is to buy bigger one. I hope it is clear enough now.
