Most expensive cards list: *exists* Portal Three Kingdoms: "now this looks like a job for me"

My best friend used to play a mono-red Commander deck and would fork the first ramp spell another player played, which always made me smile.

I'd say I'm surprised One with Nothing isn't on this list, but according to an unnamed person who makes a lot of Top 10 videos, it is a sorcery.

One With Nothing also costs 0 dollars. You can't *buy* such power, you have to *earn it* by defeating an owner of the card in a gladiatorial match to the death.

Mana Drain might be $200 in Legends, but it's been reprinted in Iconic Masters, Commander Legends, and Double Masters, where it's around $40 instead.

Yeah, it feels odd seeing Mana Drain so high on the list when it has myriad cheaper versions available. Perhaps the 'only consider the price of the original printing' rule for these lists could be replaced by 'take the lowest price of all printings' as I feel like that is the price most players care about. 'How much would I have to pay if I wanted a copy of this card,' not 'What is the priciest version of this card?'

Using only newest versions of cards would not give you a good idea of the value of the cards as new sets are depressed for macro reasons that go well beyond Magic's gamer community and also undervalued cards and sets may increase in value greatly because their power level is off the charts. In the meantime a normal event like a reprint or a banning could destroy all the data on newer versions. Original versions that are highly prized after rotation when they are not wanted for standard (because a standard player wants them cheap) would reflect a cards ability to retain value and be used to tell how much people are willing to pay to play old formats. New printings prices are as informative about value as they are about whether the card can be destroyed in game or not: new cards invalidate all claims. Put another way: you'd rather go by collector value because that's actually what the value is. This usually advantages older sets but if a card only exists in a special printing then it makes sense that some new promo sets could make a new card valuable.

It's a bit weird to look at the original printing, instead of the cheapest version. Mana Drain, for example, is less than $40 for the most recent printing. An Alpha version of Fog beats out most of the cards on this list.

Those “free” commander spells should’ve become a card they print in every commander deck.

This is one Top Ten where the most expensive card was glaringly obvious.

Maybe they would have, had not 2 (or 3 of them) being overwhelimg powerful. They did reprint the white one.

I think these most expensive lists would be neat if you listed the cheapest available normal version of that card, too (so Unlimited for the #1 cards). You could also make these lists where you only look at the cards whose cheapest versions are the most expensive (that have been printed two or more times). It would be more work, but not massively more.

Funny you make this video today, since last night I was updating some of my commander decks in Moxfield and happened to notice Mindbreak Trap was like 60, which is crazy.

There is also 4th Edition black border where you can find the Recall with this art.

Once again, I cry at the number of cards I used to have but were given away by a relative. I wasn't a fan of control decks back when but I had most of 1-5.

Hurkyls Recall is also available as foreign black bordered, drastically reducing the price.

Hurkyl's recall has been reprinted a lot of times. Other than the original legends one, you can get any version for a couple of bucks.

2:45, hahaha yay Romance of the Three Kingdoms card! You’re essentially just paying for the art at that point hehehehe, that card would be a much cooler land or artifact if it were printed today.

#3 is interesting. You’ve often said that cards that give your opponent a choice about what you do are not good, but this one seems like it can work to the player’s advantage.

Intuition is never a real choice, since you can search for three copies of the same card.

there's a big difference between your opponent choosing between one option thats good for them and one thats bad for them (as they'll always choose the one thats good for them), and making them "chose" between three bad options. intuition is mostly used to just make them chose between three copies of the same card, making the choice moot, or to choose between 3 cards that are great for the player if they're in the hand or the grave. even in the worst case scenario, you get one card you really wanted in your hand and thin your deck by 2, which is infinitly stronger than your opponent choosing to sacrifice a creature they dont have etc in most modal spells your opponent choses the mode of

Honestly if I was making a most valuable________ card type in magic. I would exclude reserved list cards due to being artificially scarce due to WOTC's knee jerk reaction back in the day. I would have them in their own list(s). That said Nizzahon is awesome.

Hurkyl's Recall shouldn't be there. Yeah, the original legends one is pretty expensive but you have a ton of reprints for a couple of bucks. The other cards either are the only version that exist or even the cheapest version is equally stupid expensive.

This is why we set rules for things, and under those rules, explained clearly at the start of the video, Hurkyl's recall qualifies. If you feel like doing such a video under your own rules, you have your own youtube channel, rathet than berating someone on how they provide you free content.

Sure is. But I only include the three most expensive from a single set, as I said in the intro. Otherwise this whole list would be Alpha instants.

Fun fact, I am actually one of the least expensive instants in Magic: The Gathering. Mostly because my only effect is to ask for "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!

There are A LOT of limiters on Shallow Grave, but for what it cost that is ESSENTIAL. But, MAYBE Reserving it is a bit much? This would have been great RARE or even UNCOMMON in a Graveyard/Sacrifice focused army type.

Literally just had this idea: now that your doing stuff for EDH/Commander, what about a "Best New Commander" list? Im currently working on a Selesnya Hydra deck with Pul... ok i cant remember his who name; but you HAVE to lnow who im referring too. There are some cards produced PURELY for a spacific format, so lets lean into it MORE!

Intuition IS a card that needs to be Reserved. There are SO MANY decks that use the Graveyards and rely on having stocked and same name/spacific named cards in the Graveyard or your Hand. Its no wonder its almost 200$!
