There's a self-selection mechanism resulting in the people arriving here being more intelligent, better connected, or both, as compared to their fellow countrymen. And so as a result, they end up doing much better here than we would expect a random Nigerian to do, if they were somehow able to make it to America.

funny how you guys mentioned that because I just saw a great documentary on youtube about it. modern stereotypical american black culture came from southern culture which was shared by all people who lived there. and that culture came from the outskirts of the english isles like ireland and scotland. and those people were extremely white so its funny how that worked out. and despite all of the negative qualities of that culture, one of the positives is loving music a lot so thats cool. it seems like the southern culture is slowly fading away now. the documentary mentioned some settlers ships in particular that landed I believe around the coast of Mississippi area and the culture started and spread from there.

I find it interesting that Matt describes Shane as being from Western PA. I am from Northeastern Ohio, and very close to Western PA. I am closer to the Yinzers. Shane is from closer to Harrisburg, which to me is mid-state or even middle-eastern PA. (It is, however, still Pennsyltucky).

I spent a summer in Harrisburg. It's a strange place. Has to be the abandoned house capital of the world. Ghetto fabulous, but the people are extremely cool and down to earth.

Locally we call it South Central PA … though it is Pennsyltucky. There are a lot of abandoned houses in Harrisburg, it’s pretty weird.
