I've said it before. You never want Ray turning up at your house unannounced as it doesn't end well.

Ray is the quintessential anti-hero. He has the sociopathic side that scares the crap out of the viewer with his potential for violence and yet sometimes, his attitude is one we would all like to have, such as with the lady with the dog in the park, or his protectiveness of his daughter and those he cares about. This series is saturated with behavioural contradictions which makes it a very engaging watch. Awesome reactions. John Pouw, New Zealand.

That's why Brooke Satchwell also plays a juror divorcee to a violent ex in another drama. There's something about her eyes, demeanor and realism I always really liked. She's also very pretty

You have to remember, at Christmas time, Ray threw his woman's brother through a plate glass window because he thought the gift that he had stolen from his daughter was "kitschy" The brother, by the way, is actually the director of all these fine, Mr. in-between shows, named Nash Edgerton and Ray's on-screen daughter Brittany is Edgerton's real-life daughter played by Chika Yasumura. Hope that made sense. 😊😊🙏🙏

I think i wrote this comment many times on the situation. In hindsight, the correct thing for Ray to do was to confront the brother and call him out as soon as he took the candle. If he refused to give it back, take Brit and leave the party. That way the family are assholes by complacency and he has done the correct thing.

Ray does what most of us fantasise doing before walking away!

The clue is in the name of the show, "Mr Inbetween" he between the old world and the new world. His behaviour would be reasonably accepted in the old world, now it's not. Like his meeting with the counsellor, he was explaining why violence is good etc, well in the old school it most certainly was to a degree, now it's not at all. So he is somewhere in-between those worlds. Well that's how it comes across to me.

Now that you have seen this episode, the second one, ep 5 the one after the first one :-) Brooke Satchwell (Ally) speaking about the abusive relationship etc, very much I believe from what I have read elsewhere is a small snap shot of her own real life relationship with another reasonably well known Aussie actor Matt Newton and a lot of this including convictions are in the public domain. I remember seeing Brooke being Ally through this and wondered firstly why she would enter a role like this not that long after her own personal experience and then secondly how she would react in the role. She did great.

Male brain and female brain are complex. I'm still on Ray's side but also understand the potential scary part too. It's a really beautiful thing.

I Totally agree. As a man I see 2 men cursing at me, getting out of a truck, and beginning to aggressively walk towards me, to do God knows what to me and my girlfriend as "violence being thrust upon me". And as a man, I know that if a confrontation is imminent, making the initial move is beneficial to being successful in defending myself and my girlfriend. That's how our minds work, and are supposed to work as protectors. I don't see it as Ray who initiated the confrontation. But he was successful in defending her and himself. Everyone survived the altercation. May not be the case if he didn't react the way he did. Or maybe they would've all become best friends and lived happily ever after.

The ''real'' unicorn was one of my favorite parts of these episodes, so cute, but also very funny, with ''Gary'' hiding in the bushes, totally covered with glitter and (too bad didn't saw your reaction) when he couldn't take the alicorn off (probably glued with superglue hahahaha!).

Yeah, took me ages to convince my girlfriend to watch it with me. Anything with a hint of violence and she won't watch it. Still haven't been able to get her to watch the greatest movie of all time, Fight Club. Finally got my girlfriend to watch Mr. Inbetween and she loved it!

I don't think red flags apply to trained hit men. The fact that she doesn't know that he is what he is, is the red flag that trumps the other. I think this is important to realise, because if Ray can control his power, he wouldn't hit a woman, he can control his emotions, in a black and white logical way. He has stated he can not tolerate a holes. I think if Ali, knew he was a hit man and the discipline he puts on himself to be a good one, she would know that he would not hit her, but then she would have to accept that he's killing a lot of people..the relationship would never have gone long term, probably best that it ended this way.

Having affairs with married people and then blackmailing them about not telling is CRAZY, your assumption that it is not is CRAZY

Hey Chrissie great reaction! It is so well written that you could watch them out of order and episode 6 would give you a hook that you just had to know what caused the breakup. I felt so bad for them as a couple but this is the beauty of the life contradictions we see. He was totally wrong for throwing him out of the window but every father out there who has a little girl for a brief reactionary moment said good but it was at a steep price. From child bullying to domestic violence we see the world through Ray's eyes in this journey and it is by no means perfect which is the secret sauce! Don't know if I can wait another week may have to pull the trigger on a membership!🤣

I never wanted the show to end the ups the downs laughs & tears, it drew you in as if you were a mate of Rays

It's always understandable why Ray does what he does. And the events are framed in such a way as to even make them sympathetic. But it's never ever right when he handles a situation with violence, unless he's genuinely defending himself or his close ones. We know, because we're in his head and it's a show, that Ray would never hurt his lady or his daughter. But it's also entirely understandable that no one else in the world of the show would believe that.

You were spot on, with your red flag. Violence is never the answer. I like all the juxtaposition is shown in so many different ways, like Ray the murderer being unable to lie to his daughter about small things. How fascinating how well these eps worked in the wrong order. I think the counsellor is kind of crap at his job, but I don't think thats inaccurate to the kind of mental health support you get for court-ordered classes sometimes in Australia, its pretty woefully underfunded in Aus and NZ, although he is a bit confrontational for what is a room full of violent guys and not very good at reading social cues, and that's all intentionally written to be this way. Some of the side charachters are famous Australian TV actors, playing roles completely unlike their famous roles, this show is great is displaying some really talented actors playing completely against type.

I understand all former victims. Nothing you can do if a guy tosses an asshole through a window. (Brother was an asshole, but you have family, right?) If you wreck some brother, you lose his sister. But you step out of your car threateningly to Ray, you get wrecked.

Totally understand why she walked away We, the audience know he would never hurt her. It's one of his few red lines not to cross is women and children (wait till you get to the child abduction episode jesus!) But she doesn't know that. All she sees is violence and what happened to her before. Her brother was a total dick... he even had the man bun! But Ray went way over the top. Christmas day, with his child there, in front of her family. And that's his best behaviour!? 😂

I can understand her not taking the chance. It sucks for Ray though because hit a woman is obviously (from the viewer's perspective) not part of his software I still think the relationship would have ended with some horrific act of violence though. Either someone trying to get Ray hurting her or some other incident happening, someone being rude or abusive to her and him doing them major harm in front of her.

I think Ray does have a hold of his emotions, he's weirdly suppressed there. I don't think he's at all emotional in a lot of his violent responses (that's the problem though). The violence is (often) just how he problem solves - the guys in the car park, one got out, the other would likely follow (at least in Ray's mind), Ray saw a likely escalation and "solved" it. Xmas was definitely emotional, but involved someone outright being a dick to a kid (his kid). What I thought was very interesting was Ray's response to his gf, no challenging her decision, he just respected it and my heart kinda broke for both of them there. Ray's likely a sociopath and I think Autism spectrum too. So, the series is written by the actor that plays Ray and he's definitely spent enough time around underworld people to pick up and believably write about them. It's all in the details with this show, which links me back to how I think Ray's character might be on the spectrum due to how he is around food and some cultural black holes that he has (although that could also be due to prison time).

😂 That's crazy I did the same thing when I watched this show. I didn't realize my Playstation had changed the viewing order by alphabetical instead of numerical ended up watching the finale as episode 2 😂 didn't realize until 3 episodes later

Shes getting really involved. Its going to be tough on her when she sees it. Just goes to show what a good show it is and how good the actors are.

That top suits you. Also - boy you got lucky in that as you say, the episodes could almost have been played in that order anyways.

The discourse about violence this show brings up is really interesting. Personally, I find it scary how many people secretly think it’s all ok, and would settle slights with violence it if only they thought they could get away with it. I love the show, but Ray is not a role model in his approach. The amount of irony in saying WORLD WAR 2 of all things was an example of good violence is unbelievable. So much cool stuff ahead, looking forward to more episodes!

I loved that you did that , ahh i did the same with black mirror, as the show was so nutsy it took me three episodes to realise haha

But in this case you were lucky and it’s one of the only shows that you can get away with it. My mate literally just watched random episodes of BM based on what he thought sounded good.

Hi Chrissie, just subscribed cos you deserve it. You asked regarding Bond movies wether you should start at the latest and go back or do a chronological run through. May I humbly suggest if you are going to do Bond you read a little of how the author saw/created him. No-one likes reading anymore but fortunately there's a few short stories written by Fleming which flesh out the character perfectly then you can reference that against how different actors and directors have portrayed him. I recommend The living Daylights, Octopussy and The property of a Lady at the very least - all short, less than an hours read but totally flesh out the character including backstory. Then watch chronologically. I hope this was helpful.

No problem Chrissie :) mixed episodes are cool :) I think Ray kind of ppl never hurts a woman even they drowning in violent world. Some girls feel that and take the risk for being with these men. The question is how we gonna know they never gonna hit their girlfriends? Maybe the keyword is control. Ray is a very selfcontrolled person. Also he knows what love is. Violant men mostly havent got learned the love and mercy in their childhood. If I were in Ray's situation and my gf's bro was being rude to my daughter like that, I would expect that my gf wouldn't be silence like that. I would expect that everyone would shut the party and being isolated that person who broke a child's heart. Not fair that Ally ignores the facts and dumbs Ray.

That is so funny…I also skipped the unicorn candle episode by mistake I think it’s the way they were listed? I recently binge watched the whole show, (I’d seen it before when it first came out 2018) As an Australian, I can say that the dialogue and mannerisms are spot on An excellent series! Have a look at The Secret Life of Us which stars Joel Edgerton, brother of Nash…another superb series, nothing like Mr. Inbetween though

yeah still dont agree judging him on the car scene. the guys who sit in the car and do nothing are also the most unreliable when your family or you need protection... women do not understand until its needed which hopefully never is. he shouldnt have assulted her brother though. That was lack of control. i tollorate zero shit and in 40 yrs i have never showed violence to any women including my wife of 16 years. ive flogged plenty of people that have tried to intimidate my family or friends. its funny how I have been judged sometimes but im also the person people feel safe with when a wierdo in the city is trying to harras them because i take care of business. there is a line. the car scene was not it. the brother was though, u dont do that over a bloody unicorn u go to the shops and find a similar one and suprise her with it the next day.

One small thing I noticed in the script, Ray's mate, the bikie president said "I gotta go see my folks". An Australian would never refer to their parents as "folks", more particularly a person of his age.

Watching episodes out of order can be a fun little meta game, every movie becomes a prequel if you watch the sequel first The guys who think rays the good guy are the same silly heads who root for the joker or Tyler durdan

As far as I see this, Ray is a psychopath. We have been shown his just/admirable side as a set up for that to be eroded by the fact that his decisions are all just guided by his lack of empathy for anyone. If he is in any way a "good guy" then maybe start mixing in different circles.

Ray is a good person who does bad things. He's clearly a traumatised man due to his stint in the army so he's going to have some misguided morals. He doesn't do evil things to good people who don't deserve it, he only hurts evil people so you can't say he's an evil person he's just not a saint

I would like to make a recommendation it's an English film, it's a frighteningly realistic portrayal of life on South Londons estates in the late 80s early 90s, it has some very well known actors like Ray Winstone, Charlie creed Miles, Kathy Burke and more, the title of the film is 'Nil by mouth'.
