Mr Bojangles - Sammy Davis Jr. at NK Hall 1989

In one of his last concert appearances, Sammy Davis Jr. performs his signature song "Mr. Bojangles" at Tokyo Bay NK Hall in Chiba, Japan on February 25, 1989 - a year before his death of lung cancer at age 64.
Davis, who performed extensively in Japan, was touring with Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli as part of a Japan Super Concert series taped by Tokyo Broadcasting System. The opening and closing narratives are from an NPR interview with his daughter Tracey Davis.
The opening scene is from a 1972 appearance on Japan's TBS network with emcee Roy James. The closing concert sequence is from a 1984 concert at the famed Budokan Hall Tokyo.

My dad introduced me to Mr Davis' music when I was 4 or 5 in 62 or 63 and I fell in love with this mans voice and his artistry. He was a true entertainment impresario who will never be matched or duplicated. His smooth voice and his loving gentle personality is why I still love him as an artist. Sweet dreams Sammy Davis Jr. You are greatly missed. Thanks Dad for teaching me what real music was, is and will always be. This is one song I will listen to for the rest of my life over and over.

He is one of the few singers who when he sings I can understand every word he says. Most singers now days I have to look up the lyrics or just guess what they said. He is one of my heroes and he will never be like Mr bojangles, he will never be forgotten. Talent like his is rare these days. He was a great entertainer and a even greater person.

My mom and late grandmother went to see him at this concert. The tickets were expensive (paid around 550 dollars back then each, not including inflation) but they didn’t want to miss the chance.

No equal. NONE! I started working on cabaret singing once I retired. There are a few people I check with (in terms of listening to their phrasing and pacing and their overall choices) - Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand and more than anyone else, Sam. I wish I had seen him perform. From his soaring high notes to his spot-on imitations of other singers to his quick draw routine to his ability to charm music out of any instrument he got near - the greatest. I miss him every time I open my mouth to try to sing. Wow.
