MPs condemn Michelle Mone PPE firm revelations

MPs reacted with outrage following the growing controversy over a PPE company linked to the Tory peer Michelle Mone after The Guardian reported that Mone referred the company to Tory ministers Michael Gove and Theodore Agnew.
Subscribe to Guardian News on KZread ► bit.ly/guardianwiressub
Mone's referral got PPE Medpro a 'VIP lane' securing it two contracts worth more £203m. Millions of pounds of PPE Medpro's profits were later transferred to a secret offshore trust fund of which Mone and her family members were beneficiaries. PPE Medpro insists the gowns passed inspection and that the company are entitled to keep the money.
Neil O’Brien, the junior health minister, defended the government's actions, denying that political connections played a role in the distribution of contracts, adding that the referral system connected ministers with members of the public who wanted to help plug shortages.
During the Urgent Question tabled by Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi said it was 'absolutely sickening, shameful and unforgivable' that 'chums of the Conservative party were profiteering' as the country struggled with the pandemic.

In March 2020, I worked for a company that happened to have nearly 30 pallets of hand sanitiser at a time when it was in very short supply. We worked for weeks trying to speak to the Health department offering to donate some or all of it to the NHS, but they wouldn't even return our calls and emails. In the end, we sold it all at cost to independent retailers across the country with fresh labels printed with a specified msrp price to avoid opportunistic price gouging. I guess we weren't part of the Tory inner circle of profiteers

Actually there are reasons why the NHS specifically and the Health sector generally would refuse the donation. The only donation they would ever consider would be directly from the actual manufacturer who could guarantee that the supply had been manufactured in a controlled fashion meeting the regulatory requirements. Any company outside of that direct chain, would need to absolutely guarantee that the material purchased was correctly manufactured and had been stored in an appropriately hygienic environment. Outside of that would you want your son/daughter, parent to be treated with material that had suspect provenance

There should be no such thing as Parliamentary Privilege. Will there come a time when every single MP has to swear on his or her Religious book before making a statement in the house, in the same way as a person does in a court room. It seems that the higher the office, the more you can get away with. Perjury comes second nature to these people, and they know that the only way they can found guilty, is through the ballot box. The damage is well and truly done by the time that happens.
