I brought out the MPC Live ii Retro to sample and chop up sounds from TrackLib. I wanted to see how far i could get in under 20ish minutes towards the idea of a track. I love the patterns i ended up with and didn't even touch a sample that was my favorite.. Classic goldfish brain..

20+ years of making tracks and I've never used an MPC, but watching your workflow was an eye opener. Seems like a lot of fun! And I have to say, I love that you leave those "oh wait, I fucked up" moments in, AND show how to fix them. That's something essential that I think a lot of people leave out of their videos. I've known too many people that get discouraged when something weird happens and just throw their hands up rather than taking a deep breath and thinking about how to fix it.

Your “from scratch” takes never fail to fascinate me, mostly because I for myself find, um, basic techniques and tools I never got my head around. But watching you bringing it all together (and I love that you can laugh at the little glitches and mistakes) encourages me to dig into the “small” things. The basic stuff that you put in there so quickly and in an almost natural way motivates me to take a couple of steps back now and then and just learn/recall and become more familiar and comfortable it. It is always a pleasure to watch you creating these tracks! Thanks for sharing!

Yo Ricky really enjoyed the tutorial. Just bought the Live 2 and then went on vacation, but I'm excited to dive in fully when I get home! I was curious, would you consider making a video about exploring breakout controller options for live performance (i.e. keyboard, faders, pads for mutes on other on/off settings, assigning to plugin parameters, x/y, pitch shifting certain sample). Seems like there's so much potential there. Also, I'm curious if you have any experience with faderfox products. Keep doin your thang! Always inspiring. Best, Dan

Hey man. This is super helpful. I’m going to take the plunge into MPC One-land this week after mostly using an iPad and some hardware synths. I’m looking for a way to have a dedicated recording station instead of my iPad doing double duty... as well an iPad. It was either an MPC One or a Blackbox. But based on your review of that I’m going with the MPC. Great to see your workflow. I’m curious what “other gear” you are referring too when you comment on the old school way of pattern programming the MPC excels at in comparison to modern pattern programming. Be nice to see a video on how you play it “contemporary”.

He's being sponsored by Tracklib... I don't think he's going to openly encourage piracy. Sampling it that way would work, though, but the downloads are high quality WAVs instead of compressed files. You could also just sample off KZread or Spotify.

Nice but to be fair you could have loaded up a vibes sound and used the chord function considering the amount of editing you did on the sample.

I'm ignorant when it comes to this style of music. How the hell do people who use nothiing, but samples not go into absolute financial ruin? Maybe I'm not getting the concept, but holy shit $50 minimum per song you sample? And that's supposed to be a deal? I've been wanting to dive into electronic and old school hip-hop. How the hell does anyone afford to create in these genres?

You only pay that if you are going to release the music. The sub lets you download your sub amount for you to work with. If you want to release it you pay the extra. Tracklib is great for finding samples.

Unless you are kanye west noones coming after you for sample use. If you are just joe schmo, you can release all the music you want, youre fine. I have been sampling my entire life and releasing music and have never had a problem. I also dont sample obvious mainstream music, and chop everything, unless youre just looping freddie jackson samples, youre fine. Ignorance of sampling is funny to me
