So as a older guy thats lived in California for 40 years, I would promote an asset based lifestyle. Moving to an area in which you will be throwing rent money away every month, with nothing to show after years, will be the biggest regret of your life. Create a realistic plan with a budget that you can do on your own, even if it means commuting or a outlining area for employment. So many people in there 40s and 50s have gone there entire life concentration on making their landlords retirement when they themselves have nothing. Its naive to think that you will be different when you're not open minded enough to look around right now.

Buying a home in Los Angeles is like buying a stock at its highest price of the year, its a dumb investment that you lose hundreds of thousand if not MILLIONS of dollars doing. Larry p my biggest pet peeve are men that are snobs about living on the west side in Santa Monica especially north of Montana yet live in a rent controlled apartment, lease their car and are in debt up to their ears in designer they don’t own yet. Literally cannot stand these people. Leasing a car doesn’t make sense unless you have your own business and it’s a write off. Renting a place allows you to be close to a job, but if people will never be motivated to move to the next place due to rent control, you create a deadweight loss with the artificial price ceiling. It’s a nightmare trying to find a decent place out here. 3-4K for a 3 bedroom at the southeast end of West side. Like literally facing the 10 freeway in the last buildings north of there like 2 years ago when I looked. It is a ridiculous waste of money to rent there. It makes more sense to save and eventually buy a place once a big earthquake hits and everyone is scared off. The quakes over this last week are normal.

Holy crap, living in TN is better. I cannot afford to live out on my own - I'm gainfully employed and make median income. I moved in with my dad who has a mortgage that is about $6000 a month (dad is rich and can afford that kinda lifestyle). Granted I do live in Venice so he's got a $4M home but I ain't on the beach.

When I first moved to LA we stayed in Studio City. Then upgraded to Venice, Marvista (next to Santa Monica).Then my wife and I wanted clean safe living so we moved out to Westlake Village Thousand Oaks area. Completely safe, affordable and beautiful. This is where you go when you have a family. Big house, not a lot of money, short drive to LA.

Oh Lord there is a lot to unpack here: The ONLY people that live in West Hollywood, Venice, and Santa Monica are low-level assistants or interns. She is right, everyone is very young. You'll think that you have entered a college campus. :-p Executives or anyone that works in the "industry" mostly lives on the east side: Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. Everyone has kinda moved from Beverly Hills to Brentwood, Malibu, or Pasadena. I moved from Ohio to LA and now work for the Walt Disney Company so I can honestly say no one other than tourist or kids enter Santa Monica. I live on the same street as near Santa Anita Race Track, Arboretum, and the largest Los Angeles County Mall in a 1-bedroom for $1,200 a month. My apartment building is surrounded by mansions that are owned by Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Moore, and Kristen wiig. You can walk anywhere because it's considered one of the safest neighborhoods in America. I never see homeless people... My apartment as all the luxury amenities ( including pools that NO ONE USES LOL), private parking, and is gated. I am 10 mins from DTLA, 10 mins from Burbank, and 5 from Glendale. In conclusion, you have been robbed. They take advantage of youngsters in those areas because they convince them that it's trendy to live there; in reality living in those areas are exactly opposite from being trendy. Those areas are tourist traps.

another tip if you plan on having a roommate: there are tons of facebook groups for people looking for someone to fill a room in their apartment, or looking for roommates to find a new place with. That's how I've found every place I've lived so far and it's worked out really well! also let me add: echo park/silver lake is the BEST area to live in if you're young and fun and broke. It's "hipster-y" but not in the venice, surfer dude-artist way. It's a lot of young writer-types who practically live in coffee shops, there's a ton of cute parks, bars, etc and it's close to downtown without being in downtown. It's such an underrated area and truly the hidden secret of LA

Ummm you could easily move over the Hill for way less. I don't get the stigma with the valley all the studios are over here and we have good bars. College kids can be so weird about it. Westwood is basically over priced trust fund people I know I have friends in the Westwood Brentwood area who have trusts.

Kaity Lowe although it is more affordable to live elsewhere, most students including myself choose to live in apartments in or near Westwood and share them with many other students (I’ve known people who cram up to 10 people in a 3 bedroom apartment) essentially I pay $800 for a shared room. It’s sadly often a matter of being able to attain adequate sleep that convinces people that living in these situations is okay because people who do live in more reasonably affordable areas such as the San Fernando Valley are often forced to wake up at 4 am in order to get to school on time without getting stuck in traffic (many of my friends who commute complain about this). Long story short, you often either pay a lot for convenience in LA or you pay time in traveling time.

I live in WeHo and I actually feel with the cost of rent it’s much more worth not having to pay vehicle payments + insurance + Gas + Valet Parking here and there, when you can just take a quick bus or Uber as long as you don’t go out and chill EVERYDAY of the week itll save you more then with a vehicle, if anyone wants to move to LA and doesn’t want to pay 1,000 just keep looking because I found a shared room for $560 a month in West Hollywood and have been here ever since.

Yeah if your single with just an average job the only way u can do it is renting a room. 560 is a good deal. Most of the room ads i saw for LA were like 700 or 800 a month for a rented room. (utilities included)

Important: The Beach communities are significantly cooler in the summer. It's 20, or even 30 degrees cooler than areas inland, and are pretty much immune to heat waves.

Lived in mid city for over 20 years. I’d say definitely learn to use the metro and DASH system, especially going to the downtown area. No need to hassle with driving in that hot mess or finding and paying for parking. I feel much more mobile and free without the car.

Let's get real ! I lived and worked in the Glendale/Burbank area, definitely one of the better parts of LA. I still couldn't wait to get out. Smog, traffic, crime and too expensive were the main reasons. I have literally lived and traveled all over the world.106 countries, most visited many times. I now live in SE Arizona and would not live anywhere else !

Lol, never ever moving to LA. My family rented a 5 bedroom house, 3,000 square feet, for only 1,600$ a month where we live. California in general is just expensive!!

I live in Manhattan. I am definitely prepared for tbe rent. I did grow up in the East Bay. I am a acali girl by birth. But, LA is less expensive than Manhattan. 🌻

A study in criminal behavior by homeless people in New York City showed the rate of violent crimes committed by inmates who were homeless was 40x higher than inmates who were not homeless. I know NY isnt LA but Im sure it's a similar story. it's silly to not to associate homeless/poor areas with violent crimes.

I live in Austin and we have THOUSANDS of homeless people here. They all react differently to being around people. I’ve had great experiences with the downtown but up north they’re a little meaner

San Diego is too dull. Pretty much the same issue for other CA cities, only LA and SF seem to be fun and interesting. The rest are very unremarkable and cookie cutter. I do like that the main downtown business area is near the water, unlike LA where it's well inland.

Your description of mid-city cracked me up! I just moved there from the south bay. A whole other world. I have never felt unsafe BUT as a POC and a man, my experience may be different. Soooooooo centrally located, I'm like 10 minutes from everything. I'm paying a fraction of what I would pay anywhere else for a GORGEOUS 1 bedroom in a four plex. Giving myself a year to see if the pro's outweigh the cons. Great work!

That’s what it is. It’s really not glamorous at all. Hollywood Boulevard is dirty and packed with panhandlers and Asian tour groups. Rodeo Drive is nice for one visit if you want to see overpriced clothes and super cars, but it’s nothing worth going out of your way for. When you first arrive, you’ll ooh and ahh at the Hollywood Sign, but you get used to it. You’ll see celebrities out and about, but they go by so quickly you won’t be able to chat. The first week I was there, I saw Simon Cowell on Melrose in a red Ferrari, and I saw Angelyne in her pink car. If you want to enjoy living in LA, you need to make six figures and invest your money well, or you will constantly sweat the cost of living.

The metro is used quite a bit by people who commute from San Gabriel Valley and the IE who work in LA, it’s one of the best ways to avoid traffic on the 10 fwy.

@@ShelbyChurch Sorry, Shelby, I don't mean to be a pain, it's just that I remember arriving in L.A. at 19, terrified I'd end up on the street, broke and unable to afford a place to live, and I know lots of young people are in the boat -- to all of you who are, *DON'T BE!* It'll work out! You'll make it! And living in L.A. is an amazing experience unlike *_anywhere_* else! 😺 But if giving advice to people dreaming of moving to La La Land, you should be letting them know there are safe, clean, affordable options -- not scaring them with $4400/mo 2 bed places presented as being 'typical.' About being more central -- and your comment about Hollywood being sketchy -- definitely parts of it are! But not all of it. The area west of La Brea where it bumps up next to West Hollywood is nice, urban feeling, away from the tourist Hell, and better priced than a true 'West Hollywood' address. If you shop around, you can find a decent studio there for around 1300/mo. Personally, I really like that area and lived there for a few years. And even a studio apartment of your own is far more appealing than just renting a room, I think, for most people? Idk.

Ive been watching your videos for years, and i will continue to. This video has been very informative and i believe will be helpful for many! But im just curious why you kept associating being around homeless people with being unsafe. Just because someone doesnt have a place to live, doesnt mean they are unsafe or are going to hurt you. I live in canada and i work with one of the largest homeless populations. Anyone can hurt you or make you feel unsafe, if you use common sense you shouldn't have a problem. The homeless folks i work with have been some of the sweetest and most giving people ive ever met. Just because they cant afford to pay 3k a month for rent, doesnt mean they dont deserve the same dignity and respect as anyone else. Anyways, just some food for thought❤

teighan lynn homeless people are extremely different everywhere you go. That’s why. Some of them are extremely violent and rude. Most are not but if she’s hard a scary experience with more of the mean ones, it’s hard for her view to remain unskewed

I disagree about downtown LA. It’s always been overpriced for what you really get. Just as expensive as Santa Monica and there’s not nearly the amount of amenities you get on the westside. West Hollywood is “central” if your life revolves around that area. To get out of Weho takes a village. Spot on about Mid City. I live here, not the best, but much more affordable. Gentrifying quickly though. Townhouses down the street from me just sold for over a million each. It is central and close to freeways if you drive a lot.

Wavey eh depends on where you live too. In Texas the housing prices are going up as well. Our mortgage is 1,000 a month for a 3 bed, 2 bath, garage house. In my opinion that’s average, not really a mansion. Only difference from us and our neighbors is that our house is more spaced out (the living room is big, and the rooms have some space in between them.) and have higher ceilings.

Pointless i live in houston have a 250k home its a mansion to me compare to a 250k home in LA would cost. My morage is around 1300 for 4 bedrooms 3.5 baths and a huge backyard with 2 car garage parking a drive way. So theres that lol. Texas homes are huge compare to other states and and much cheaper ever tho the cost is going up.

Wavey I just think it’s where I live then cause houses here are around 150,000-250,000 (you can get a 4 bed here but it’s not a standard.) but like I said, most houses here are 3 bed, 2 bath. Plus, I live in a small town in northern Texas, most people here are AG or factory workers, working overtime for 800 a week. I’m surprised Houston is so cheap tbh, I have a friend that moved there and they also got a house about your size and I never understood how they could afford it lol. Houston is literally full of people, plus y’all’s highways are dangerous, every time I would go I’d see like 4 accidents, I’m sure there’s more per day tho lol

You're right about the average L.A. salary to L.A. cost of living, and the fact that a lot of people who complain about L.A. cost of living are from states where the minimum wage is still a measly $7.25 per hour and the average pay is quite low!!!!!!!! Go figure!

Echo Park, silver lake, Los Feliz is also very expensive. Since it is so gentrified, new housing is made but rent is high as well. Really nice places to live.

For the average person looking to move to LALA land be prepared to pay out of your ass for the year round nice weather and the plush sandy beaches and all the hype glitz n glamour of LA. First upon arrival you will pay well over 3 bucks a gallon for gas. Second- you will get taxed on everything you buy like food, car registration and inspection and the state of Cali will also take their nice portion of your paycheck. 3rd L.A. is way overcrowded and populated to the point where it can get overwhelming, if you have to get anywhere by a certain time leave early cause you will find yourself in very slow moving freeway traffic and very congested surface streets where you will hit a major intersection every 150 yards or so with traffic lights that take forever to change and traffic is worse on the weekends when everyone is out heading to places like the local beaches , ammusment parks or headed out of town to Vegas, San Diego/Tijuana , palm springs or San Fran. 5th on any day anywhere you go to do whatever you will going large crowds and long lines at the bank,post office, grocery stores, restaurants, fast food joints and gas stations. 6th - a studio or a one bedroom apartment in the LA. erea will range anywhere from 1,000 to 1,400 and it will be in some runed down apartment buildings in South central or parts of east L.A., if you want to live in a decent part of town like the West side or in a South bay city near the beach or in trendy ereas just north of downtown like silver lake, echo park and Glendale with all the Armenians and hipsters it will cost you 1,8000 and up like way up. 7th - if you want to own a home in L.A. county an average house in a lower middle-class neiborhood borderline ghetto will start off at 360,000 - 400.000 k , and depending on your credit and how much you put down payment you will have yourself a nice hefty mortgage of between 2,500 - 3,000 a month. So LA LA land is not all it's cracked up to be and if your looking to move there bring money and lots of it because if you want to live comfortably in a decent part of the city you will need to bust your ass working 2 jobs or have one job where you earn at least 70 k a year. All this in a nutshell is the hard cold truth of living in the city of Angeles and if you go there unprepared L.A. is a mean and nasty place that will chew you up and spit you out with no mercy.

I have thought about moving to LA after college because there seems to be so much more opportunity than where I live in Michigan! I have heard multiples times that people see celebrities walking around and it’s no big deal. I just have a hard time believing people don’t ask for pictures or anything. How much truth is there to this?

I'm from Michigan and moved her, but I lived in shadier areas you'll survive if you do that. I live in the valley now and it's nice. You do see celebs around usually no one bothers them because they're home, but I did see Miley outside Granville Restaurant like a month back and someone did get a photo with her so it does happen.

If your still in school I recommend you apply for internships in LA to see if you like it over the summer 👍 or apply to jobs in LA while you are still in school that way you have a job lined up. There are many areas to live in “LA County” 😉 besides what was mentioned

A little LA traffic secret. Monday’s and Friday’s are the best days because a lot of people work the 9/80 shift or 10/40 shift and have either mondays or Friday’s off. Best days to book appointments, go to beach, etc. ., Saturday and Sunday mornings are a breeze for traffic.
