Moving Pasture Raised Pigs to a New Paddock Using Hot Wire. It's Easier Than You Think!

Ойын-сауық

In this video we wanted to show you what it looks like to move pigs to a new paddock. We are a small scale farm and are currently raising 13 pigs on pasture. We move their paddock every 10-14 days. The idea of raising pigs using only a hot wire can be nerve racking at first but it's actually pretty easy if you train them early. The hot wire and automatic waterer make our pigs moves go extremely quick and for the most part stress free.

I'd like to get our pigs out on pasture by spring. Your videos are inspiring. Keep on keeping on, glad to see you raising pigs on pasture. I saw another set up with a smaller trough, i think 10 gal. They had the wire on the front of the tank so they cant root under it.

It’s not as hard as you would think. It’s definitely intimidating at first though. I’ve got a couple setup videos planned for the spring. Not sure if I’ll have them out into for you or not though. Check out Heifer USA’s channel for more inspiration. They are a lot larger but great information. Yea the trough I think I can improve on. Got the winter to think about that. I’ve also got a cool shade structure idea with misters I want to try and make! Thanks again for the kind words!

Nice setup you got going for the pigs. Your videos are informative and entertaining. You should post more often; I can imagine you getting quite the following.

Hey I appreciate the kind words! Posting more frequently is definitely that goal. Unfortunately long hours as a lineman and farm duties take priority at the moment. Video editing is still slow at the moment but I’m getting there! Comments like these give me the boost needed to keep moving though. I’ll keep working at it! Have a great day!

It did great until the last month before processing. It’s a great shelter and I’ve got an easy fix for the problem I had. I’m getting ready to put a video out this week going over this!

why don't you broadcast seeds of stem ammarath , field peas and sorghum sudan grass? they are cheap and will give you tons of food for your pigs. wait to see next spring

I appreciate the advice! I’m still very much learning especially when it comes to the different pasture grasses. I will look into those for sure! Thanks!

Looks good…get a poly barrel or water tote, bulkhead fittings and pig water nipples….the water troughs are terrible for hogs!

Man I tried the nipple thing. That’s what I used for years until this spring. They were always causing me fits. I want them straight off the hydrant with a regulator inline. I really like the tank setup so far other than the mess they make in front of it. Maybe my nipple setup before just wasn’t a great design. Maybe I’ll give it another go in the spring and do some comparisons between the 2. My main goal is to get everything as automated as I can. My shifts at work can go long at times and I don’t want them to be without feed or water. I appreciate you chiming in though! I’ll take the nipple setup back to the drawing board and see what I can come up with for next season.

Put pressured hog nipples in a concreted tire. Move tire around paddock daily.
