Moving our Blue-Tailed Monitor into the Zoo!
The blue-tailed monitor in our last rescue video is officially a member of our zoo! Today we renovate the woma python exhibit to be a rainforest oasis for the still unnamed blue-tailed monitor.

Do you have an australian critter named Irwin yet? This guy really is a beaut! And it would be a wonderful homage to the first guy to teach us about loving reptiles before Snake Discovery was a zoo.

Ikr? Ed is so frickin funny 😂 Specially him doing voices for the animals is so funny to me. And to think he was so camerashy in the beginning 😆
Once, many years ago, my Mum lost her engagement ring whilst gardening. She was utterly devastated, and beat herself up about it for months. Come the spring, as the bulbs started to break through, there it was lifted out the soil by a plant growing up through the middle. Just gows to show that nature is a miracle in all sorts of ways!

I love @rawritsataco’s suggestion to call the monitor Irwin, but to me he seems a little too spicy for Steve. (Although he is an enthusiastic explorer, for sure!) An alternative name could be Bandit, which is the name of the dad in the Australian cartoon “Bluey”. I would suggest Bluey as a name, but in Australia that’s really what we call blue-tongued lizards rather than blue-tailed monitors, so a Bluey-adjacent moniker seemed fitting. 💙 Whatever his name, he’s going to be one happy chappy in that gorgeous enclosure!

Well it sure isn’t just Australian anymore.. it is everywhere I see shirts and *gummies* for blues everywhere.
I still really like the name Celski (as a reference to the speed* skater who recovered from a horrid gash that could've cost him his left leg, his career, and maybe even his life, and still ended up getting Olympic Bronze in 2010 despite everything) that someone mentioned from the last video, but knowing Emily's love of "normal" names, I wanted to mention that Celski's full name is John Robert (J.R.) Celski, as well as make another case here for the name! It's too perfect, it's the same leg and everything! Edit: Adding here that the original comment was left on the video of his recovery and surgery by Haley Houdini! * Edit 2: He was not a figure skater, my bad!

You could name him after Steve Irwin. Steve was once grabbed on the hand and pulled into the water by a croc. He could have easily lost a hand and was very lucky to walk away in all likelihood. Plus he was also an Aussie! I think Irwin would be a cute name for him. ❤️

I'm thinking Achilles or Hephaestus (Festus for short) would be a cool name for him. Achilles because of his heel and Hephaestus had a limp so it fits. I'm sure NotWoma loves the new habitat and would express its gratitude if it could!
Since monitors can learn their names just like crocodilians, it would be a great idea to keep his name short, simple, but unique! Something related to his striking blue tail would make a perfect name. Alternatively, you could name him after a place in Queensland, where he's native to in Aus! Such as: Mackay, (Port) Douglas, (Cape) York, Torres (Strait), Cairns, (Great Barrier) Reef, Daintree (Rainforest).
That enclosure is enrichment overload! It’s perfect for him!! The whole background is his rock climbing wall and will be great for rehabing his leg. So nice to see his progress from a sad, angry, injured monitor to an active, inquisitive, new member of the Snake Discovery family. 🦎
I giggled way to much when Ed fake ran for it over not being married for a sec. xD Thank you guys for this video. It's a nice closure for our new Lizard buddy.
So awesome to see him be able to do so much in his new home especially climbing on everything
With the name, how about a Australian Aboriginal name? Like Mirri meaning "The Sun", since you bring him offerings of food to his basking spot. Love how well he moves and that he was added to the Zoo family! The videos makes my day every day I see them. Thank you for the education and the fun!

I really enjoyed seeing where he is now compared to what he went thru. And how happy you guys are to see him happy.
He looked pretty good at the end of the last video, but seeing that little dude climb all over his enclosure shows off just how well recovered he is!! So glad everything regarding his leg turned out so well 😊
Braveheart? He’s got blue on him and he’s a warrior. I love the enclosure and glad you found your ring!
fantastic enclosure, a name suggestion from Australia is Bloop or blooper (cute tail name play i.e. blue) 🦎Although Irwin totally rocks !
I LOVE what you did with his new enclosure!! It's super awesome. And he's such a beautiful monitor!
You could put a little garden in the greenhouse and grow your own greens for the animals. Save some money on the ever expanding grocery bill. You could have your program classes help with it, a great learning experience for the kids to see where the food comes from.

I am so glad you decided to keep him
I'm really impressed with how well he's climbing and getting around after his whole leg infection. To think he could have had it amputated to making a full recovery, its just brilliant. Looking forward to learning his new name , he sure is gorgeous 🥰
His leg looks so much incredibly better. From the first video that you had when it was so swollen it looked so horrible. He’s absolutely gorgeous.
He's a beauty of a monitor and a perfect addition. I love the new enclosure so perfect and huge for him to explore and use the leg. Ya'll are perfection. Irwin is a great name and a lot of others are saying the same. He's an Australian explorer.
Those animals are so fortunate that you put such attention into every habitat! Good husbandry is so fun to watch.
I think Montgomery Montgomery, from a serious of unfortunate events, would be a good name for him (apologies if female, I haven't watched the leg surgery video yet). It looked like he likes to explore and his nickname could be Monty both referring to his name and his species.
Nicely done, he's looking so much happier with his new home. Thanks for showing us😊
I love how you actually care for your reptiles and other animals, if they don't like being in the zoo then they are moved in the back and those who are more social and enjoy people watching get moved into the zoo. Much better than a lot of other zoos
The first video with him in it, the name Bluey came to mind. He’s adorBs. Thanks for sharing his recovery. Y’all remind me of my spouse and me! We do not act our age nor do we need forgiveness for it either. Keep having fun and love, love love. 💖💖💖

Or maybe "Bandit" (Bluey's dad) since he's male?
Awesome new start for this guy. Rescue reptiles who have gone through intense rehab always crack me up with their rescuers - how they act so full of hate. I rescued a veiled chameleon who acted like he hated me his entire life. When he got sick (cancer) I took him to the vet. He turned some crazy colors I had never seen and hissed/bit the vet during the inspection. When they handed him back to me, he immediately put on his relaxed colors, curled up in my hands, and fell asleep. That's when I realized all that "hatred" for me was a show. He trusted me the whole time. Even the reptiles who don't do well with handling bond with us in other ways we don't realize, especially when we save them and help them feel better. My name nomination for this guy is Imhotep because he has y'all resurrecting lost body parts and bringing him offerings on a slate 😂

Name him Celski! After the olympic speed skater who sustained a huge gash to his thigh during a race, they weren't sure he'd survive or ever be able to skate again. five months after the injury he ended up recovering fully and getting Bronze in the 2010 Olympics! Also their injuries are on the same leg, left :)
Awesome enclosure. He looks so good in there and seems to be very happy in his forever home. He is really thriving.
I love seeing them explore their new space for the first time - it's like unleashing a little kid into their own personal playground! ❤️
I somehow came up with a good name for him a year later: Terry after Terry Fox, the athlete who lost a leg to a particularly nasty cancer at 18 and spent the last 5 years of his life on a truly massive fundraiser for cancer research. It was a cross-Canada run called Marathon of Hope. Unfortunately his cancer proved fatal. He wasn't able to finish the run, but he is rightfully honoured for the amazing things he accomplished. There's a charity run held every year in his honour, though it's called the Terry Fox Run. Even though our little guy was able to keep his organic leg, unlike the human Terry Fox, he went through a difficult recovery from a rather tough leg problem too. He's also quite the runner! ❤
Thank you for the wonderful videos! I never thought anything about snakes before I found your channel. I have seen every single video and know so much about snakes snd reptiles. Emily I thought you had great composure! You lost your ring and then your husband started teasing it was his chance to get away. He is very lucky to have you! I am sure he knows that. ;)
So happy to see him really enjoying his new enclosure. Love his biiiig tongue flicks, so much enrichment in there I'm sure he'll soon settle and be happy with you guys!
Love that you guys have a Doreanus on display now. They are so beautiful and amazing to watch how intelligent they are. I have a male that I have named Drax “The Destroyer’ since his tail is blue and he destroys his enclosure. 😆
