Moving Mayhem

Ойын-сауық

The plaintiff hired the defendant to move a piano out of her house. She says the defendant’s workers damaged her door and porch while moving it, so she’s suing for damages. The defendant admits he hit the piano on the door, but there’s no proof of the porch. He doesn’t think he owes her because she’s suing so many months after it happened.

true , but also this is another case where the working man gets screwed by the upper middle class and the wealthy property owners again . that woman would have had to pay hundreds of dollars to have her piano removed and hauled away once she decided to get rid of it so she is being greedy and also there is no proof that damage was caused by the piano , its pure speculation and guessing and if i were the defendant i would have told the judge that the damage to her house was already there before they got there and unless she had pictures to show otherwise then the case should be dropped . its very suspicious that this lady took a picture of the piano right next to the damage on the floor that she claimed she did not notice until two weeks later too . she took that picture of the piano near the damage that she already knew was already there before they ever even put the piano there.

There is NO excuse for being late without letting the customer know in advance. The first thing professional movers do is cover your floors with cardboard to avoid damage. If the piano had been on the described dolly with large rubber tires, neither the door track nor deck would have been damaged.

This poor woman. She didn't want money. She just wanted to gift her piano to someone. And for her generosity, she gets a damaged door, damaged track, and a damaged deck. All of which is going to cost her over $1,400.00 to repair, plus lost income! Then she gets the runaround from the guy who damaged her home, and a bunch of insults from commenters on youtube. She didn't deserve any of this. At least she won her case. Good for her.

Yeah, I be pissed at the person she gave the Piano too cause its pretty obvious they got a cheap mover to do the job, not a specialist piano mover. Just saying "we've move a hundred" (which is an obvious lie) doesn't make you a specialist piano mover. Not scoping the job prior to the shifting day and then scheduling the shift after the moving crew had done a previous move (so they be tired and not fresh) are major tell this a cut price moving company, not careful, high end piano movers.

Many might not realize the challenges of moving a piano. I moved furniture and cabinets for 30 years. The weight of an upright piano is supported by only 4 tiny wheels. So, a professional dolly with big heavy duty casters is required to move that piano. And yes, plywood down or metal plates are required to go over anything in the way, like a piece of floor moulding, a door threshold etc... The defendant was 100% unprepared, unqualified and at fault. PS: the movers my ex-wife hired to empty my house ended trashing the family room wood floor while moving...an upright piano! Often, it pays off to hire "real" professionals even at a higher initial cost.

As an experience mover and a damn good piano mover, I built my own tools. As a vip mover also I carried 300 feet of Masonite. You never move a piano across a deck. She obviously lived in an elevated apartment condo house etc. This is why we build stair risers if you do not know what they are oh well nothing to do with stair support. I moved a square 4 legged grand piano out of one of Lincoln's Home and delivered it to a famous Singer in Nashville. That said. I have won more bets than you will ever know. The man has no clue he should have called a piano mover. You will find has nothing to with strength. It is knowledge and tools. Plus the ability to protect dwelling and piano. My life has been nothing but moving and writing great source code. Love you all.

We tipped them very well but they still asked us not to call them when we decided to move out! 😁

HARVEY, she didn't say a thing about it being an expensive piano, she was giving it away. Uprights are almost impossible to get rid of anymore because of moving problems. It's really hard to find people that will even deal with them. I had a small pump organ and all of the moving companies I called wouldn't touch it so I found 2 strong guys and they carried it down 3 flights of stairs. I got lucky because a lot of beer and steaks were all they wanted for payment.

This case is intriguing. The plaintiff appeared pleasant and remarkably articulate, providing a detailed account of the situation, even recounting her attempt to resolve it with the defendant before resorting to litigation. Judge Milian's interventions were minimal. Occasionally, the camera caught the defendant silently nodding, seemingly in agreement with her narrative. However, his perspective on the extent of the damage stemmed from his unprofessional handling of her 500-pound piano. The absence of a standard secondary ramp is puzzling; perhaps oversight due to their habitual tardiness. Chronic lateness suggests potential issues beyond this incident alone. It's satisfying to see the plaintiff adequately compensated for her efforts and time.

There is something called 'body straps' that allow you to pick up heavy objects like refrigerators, washers/dryers and pianos with your body. Each of 2 people wrap the straps across their bodies, squat down and wrap the shortened straps under each side of the object, then stand up. Surprise! the object lifts off the floor and the 2 people can carry using their bodies, not their backs. As a piano teacher, we have used this method for years moving our own pianos, both uprights and grands, and this method is used by professional movers of all types for large items. Why this guy didn't know about this method is pretty unprofessional.

The plaintiff shouldn't have to be telling the movers what to do. Sounds like they need some on-the-job training and the right equipment to do a job. Can't do the job? Don't accept it.The defendant KNOWS he's in the wrong. He's standing there looking passive but he knows he and his people made a mess of this job. Good job, JM.

I call BS on the deck. Sounds like a poorly constructed deck. You’re telling me a couple people can’t stand next to each other for an hour on a deck without the supports moving. That’s the equivalent of that piano. Come on. Like the mover said, there were 4 points of contact. It’s not like all the weight was on one spot. Judge Milian seemed to have a negative bias towards the guy and never really let him explain his side of the story without constant interruptions and insults

Having owned pianos & had them moved, the mover must be a professional piano mover who not only knows the logistics of the physical move but how to safeguard the musical “guts” of the piano insuring it will play properly afterward.

When I moved pianos we had a piano dolly which had an offset wheel in the middle. The two wheels in the middle were larger than the wheels on the other two axles so that you could pivot it up and down and there was always at least one axle to support it while you moved on to the next step. No ramp is a rookie mistake!

I would have sued him also. The track to her door is damaged. The door will never move right again. The deck was damaged because a 500# object set on it for an hour. It's just like a mattress that you lay on. Over time, the weight of your body wares it out.
