MovieStuff Retroscan Universal review

Фильм және анимация

Using the Retroscan HD film scanner and my thoughts on it. I can convert standard 8mm, super 8mm & 16mm film to DVD, USB flash drive or any format you require. Visit www.avpstudios.co.uk for details.

    I get hardly any enquiries for sound transfers, I have done several 16mm optical sound transfers but these were for clients I have worked with for many years and they have always provided copyright clearance. Roger is correct, for the volume of enquiries it would be cost prohibitive. The machine does a fantastic job with every film I have put through it

    Hey. I'm working in a place that has this machine and I'm making digitalization of 8mm and super 8mm with this model, but one thing that "kills me" is the low resolution and pixelized image, after the export. The image is not good and the exportation shows a saturated image and with gamma gap. Someone can help me find the best settings to export the image? Thanks!!

    While scanning old R8 film on 250 feet spools, the motor speed varies significally, and the scan is a bit "bumpy". And then later, it works with a steady speed for a long while. When rescanning the film, these symptoms appears on the same spots. What is the probable reason for this behavior?

    Thanks for the review. Do you use "Neat Video" software to improve the scan quality? The Moviestuff web site recommend it so I'm interested to know if the output is grainy.

    You mentioned that sound scanning was expensive. Well, I have access to a Retroscan scannner and the combining RetroSync Sound module, as well as the RetroSync Audio software in a public "club". The problem is that we have no idea of combining the scanned movie with the time frame-by-frame corrected frame file. Can you help us with a guidiance of combining the movie together with the timeframe and the sound? Are both combined in the RetroSync Audio module? Kind regards Per - from the Copenhagen fablab scanning workshop.

    Great review! Thanks for sharing. I have a question about frame rates. When you go to export from the Universal software, can you select a frame rate? Or, is that something that needs to be addressed in a NLE workflow? Thanks again!

    When you output the finished scan in the Retroscan HD software, I noticed that you choose 18 fps. When you edit the film, in FCPX for instance, what frame rate do you choose for your timeline? 24p or 25p? Going to DVD to Blu-ray, the option to choose 18 fps is not there ...

  • @AvpStudios

    @AvpStudios

    7 жыл бұрын

    The output is 18fps from the scanner to match the rate the film was originally shot at. Bringing an 18fps MOV file into FCPX works perfectly when dropped on to a timeline set at 25fps. The timeline needs to be 25fps to sync correctly the with 50hz electric here in the UK. If you are in the US you would still export at 18fps but set the timeline to 30fps to sync with 60hz electric cycle in the States. I hope this helps.

    A few months later and I am still extremely pleased with the machine. If I had a gripe it would be with the software. There are several annoying aspects with the software and it can be glitchy but the unit will not work with anything else so I am stuck with it. All said and done though, I think its still the best on the market and the results are great.

  • @AvpStudios

    @AvpStudios

    You are right, probably no one (unless your rich and money is not an issue) would, the Retroscan is sold mainly to companies who provide film transfers as a service. My company offers this service and the Retroscan has paid for itself many times over. The Wolverine unit would be great for someone who has a handful of films and wants to do the transfers at home and not spend too much money on doing it, I think this is where it wins but it is painfully slow, a 50ft reel (4 mins) takes over 30 mins to scan on the Wolverine and its maximum film size is 200ft.

    @@AvpStudios I am in the same line of thinking. Yes, it has motorised zoom, rewind functions, and the light pin gate .... but I can't justify it either. My Universal 2K does not have the light pin gate. I decided too late to get one. Roger told me that he does not do the modification any more which is understandable, but also as I live in Australia, and the terrible exchange rate, the price at the time I could'nt justify it. One hint on the use of these units. I get perfect focus when I rest a little pressure on the supply reel as its feeding during the scanner. I just rest my finger on the edge of the reel and it works brilliantly.

    Hello. I have an old 8mm that was converted to digital at this location kzread.info/dash/bejne/X5l4ss1pZr2qopM.html . But I have these marks, spots, and some sort of squiqels running occasionally through the movie. Does your device have the same problem. Are those from the original film or did the digital conversion cause that. Are they called dust and scratches or artifacts. What is the proper name for this defect.

  • @productionspm
    @productionspm7 жыл бұрын

    But it is not real Full HD the camera capture 1280X960 so after on processing the capture you can boost at 1920x1080. If you put that result on a MAC and click on INFO you see the real size of capture. That why the older telecine Sniper HD is a real Full HD.

  • @RogerDEvans-kz4tb

    @RogerDEvans-kz4tb

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well, that's not technically correct. "HD" refers to anything that is above standard def and has enough resolution to satisfactorily capture all the desired information in the target. To say that 964 (not 960) isn't "full HD" would then mean that all the 720p HD cameras Sony sold by the millions weren't really HD either. From a practical standpoint, 964 is only 58 lines short top and bottom of being true 1080. Ultimately, 58 lines is about the thickness of an 8mm frame line so it's really a distinction without a difference for this application. Also, even high end scanners routinely crop into the pixel array of the camera when the loss of digital resolution is less than the required optical resolution for the target being captured. In fact, if you look at the settings on your Sniper-HD, you will find that it uses a bit the digital zoom to push into an 8mm frame so, even then, you are still only somewhere "near" 900-1080. The camera then upscales the difference to a 1080 output. The Universal software does the same thing only it does a better job because it happens during export of the files rather than in real time by the camera.

    Sorry Roger, but Full HD refers to 1080P. Yes, HD can refer to 720P as well, but Full HD or FHD is BT.709, or 1920 x 1080 pixels. 1280 x 960 is a long way from 1920 x 1080, roughly 1.2MP vs 2MP, (in fact it is 844,800 pixels less than Full HD). Yes, all the 720P Sony cameras are not Full HD, and were never marketed as such.

  • @RogerDEvans-kz4tb

    @RogerDEvans-kz4tb

    7 жыл бұрын

    I understand what you are saying but it's really a distinction without a difference, for this application. Remember, the target image area for all home 8mm and 16mm home movies is roughly a 4:3 aspect ratio, not 16:9. The current Universal camera captures the target frame using the full 1296 x 964 4:3 sensor. To capture all the information in a 4:3 frame (no cropping), the 1296 width is virtually the same capture area you would use on a 16:9 1920 x 1080 sensor. Thus having a 1920 width is of no advantage since the area to the left and right outside of 1296 will just be black and contain no additional picture information. Thus the only real difference would be the height of the sensor. The current Universal sensor is 964 in height, which is only 58 lines short top and bottom of being 1080. 58 lines is about the thickness of an 8mm frame line. Capturing on a "true HD" 1920 x 1080 sensor will produce no visible difference in resolution on the height and zero difference in resolution on the width since 1920 is so much wider than needed to capture a 4:3 image.

    Roger is correct, our Tobin PHD has the same resolution as this camera, you must remember that 1920x1080 is a 16:9 film size, all cine film is 4:3 aspect ratio, if you scaled up the size to 16:9 it would fall into the full HD range. The difference between SD and HD with cine film is minimal anyway, it needs to be really good film to see the difference, 16mm of course is the best for scanning with HD. R8mm is virtually indistinguishable, S8mm is a slight improvement in detail but only on good film. The downside is any that any physical attributes to the film such as scratches and chemically bonded dirt will be highlighted beautifully in HD. This is a nice machine and I think it could well be on our order books for next year for the 9.5mm gate especially, possibly 16mm now that Tobin have stated they are no longer going to build 16mm machines.

    Hi, I completely understand your anger and frustration but I want to make something very clear. You say 'this company', some may read that as being me, my company has been trading since 1985 and is still going strong. 'The company' refers to Moviestuff LLC and Roger Evans who is/was the director of the company, Moviestuff are the company who manufactures these products, not me. I still use the Retroscan Mark i machine, I have plenty of spare parts and continue receive 5* reviews on google, see here www.avpstudios.net/youtube.
