Very helpful, thanks! Was just wondering whether to update mine (also about 2 years old) and I think you convinced me...

Thanks for showing how to still focus the films. I've been running this machine a couple of times now at the Copenhagen municipality's digitalization workshop, but I have had issues setting the focus right and have been winding the film back and forth as you explain was the usual way earlier.

Any chance you have a 2K camera for sale ? I own one with standard resolution. I've looked here in America, but, can't seem to location one. You do great work. Thanks for sharing.

How do you transfer optical sound using Retroscan? It only captures the image of the sound.

Do you know which specific 2K camera this is? Prior Retro-8 pros units used the Point Grey Chameleon CMLN-13S2C-CS USB 2.0 camera.

Nice video! I'm considering upgrading mine as well. Do you still use FCPX for postproduction? I noticed you hade chosen jpegs as output - FCPX can't handle that...

RE: Scanning resolution. If most of your work-orders end up on DVD (720x480), the 'old' resolution is indeed adequate. More than adequate, in fact, as the image from the film is concentrated on the central 1286x964 area of the chip, affording those pixels an image that has at least 1.5 times the brightness compared to spreading the frame image out over the full 2048x1536 of the sensor. BTW, you need to order a few more C-mount extension tubes and add them to the stack on the lens to do this. I added a 10mm and 5mm extension to the stack to scan 8mm, and just the 10mm to scan Super-8. I use Davinci Resolve to grade and finish, and Final Cut Pro X to produce Blu-Ray disks. I have a large order with one client whose husband was a motorcycle enthusiast in the 50s, and have an arrangement to offer footage devoid of family members as stock footage to help defray (and perhaps recover some of the) cost of processing her order, so I scan in 2K and shrink to delivery size: www.pond5.com/stock-footage/88680445/motorcycle-hill-climb-1956-7.html

Resolution wise, that is technically true. But the new 2K camera has a sharper image and better color, even at the original 1.3mp resolution of the older camera. The original HD camera has a CCD that dates back to 2011. The new CMOS chip in the 2K camera has much new technology behind the imagery it produces. It is a much better camera, even if you are only capturing for HD or SD.

Interesting ... what would be a good scanner for negative scanning of 35mm stills?

Nice rundown! 16mm clear edge film seems to be a pain to run steady. Any suggestions?

Yes! We now have an upgrade for all gates to help deal with clear edge film. Please see the new LightPin sensor upgrade, which provides solid registration for all clear edge film or any film that has clear areas around the sprocket hole. www.moviestuff.tv/moviestuff_lightpin_mod_offer.html
