11 years later and this is still one of the very best videos on topic!
I have been shooting all my life I'am 46 years old I have learned more it 20 minutes watching your videos than I care to admit I just thought I knew how to handle a six gun & lever gun! Thank you for the videos.

Glad I'm not the only one!
I bought an Uberti 1873 lever action without having lever action experience. This video has been so helpful as I practice and I keep coming back to it. Masters Class.
thats got to be the most broken in gun on earth...lol i bet that thing is unbelievably smooth!!!

I'm pretty sure I've seen a video where you can adjust the settings on the gun like setting up an electric guitar

Jim Finch is known as Long hunter. He has a custom tuning outfit in Texas. I have one of his rifles. It's insanely smooth. Best lever gun I've ever owned.

Oh boi, I know right. I am in awe with lever guns, the repeaters😍😍😍. RDR2 made it even better for me. These repeaters guns are just too SWEET!
We have rifle caliber lever action and now I am buying a 41 magnum lever action. Just enough rounds to really benefit learning these tips. Thank you Jim!
You remind me of a great friend gone to heaven. Modern day cowboy/MTN man. This bear Hunter had all kinds of firearms, but he truly loved his revolvers (Redhawk) and his lever action Rifles.. thank you for your demonstration. I watched countless times.. and learned it your way, I recently bought the family and I a Henry big boy "all weather" repeating rifle chambered in calibers of .357mag/.38spl ... Got to cowboy it at the range! Boy it brought attention and curious shooters.. love how a lever action smoothly flows through the motions.. shaking hands real nicely to our Rifle, again thanks for your help cowboy. Native American brother. Blue skeleton
Warmest thanks for all those fundamentals. Many of them can be transferred over to other shooting disciplines. I greatly appreciate this technical training. All the Best!!
Your shootin's as slick as that rifle's action. Good job on the video. I learned something today.
Great tips! Thanks for showing us what you do and helping us be better.
Exceptionally well made video. Short, to the point and really good tips. Thanks !!
That action is so slick i tripped.
Man! That stroke is short!...and slick....great vid...picked up my 1st l.a.(marlin .30 .30). Can't wait to try her out!

Very Informative, Thank You! That is one smooth lever action. I've shot a Win 94 and it's nothing like the one in the video. Wow!

Yes. Just about every centerfire firearm manufactured in the last 50 years or so are dry-fire safe, assuming the parts are in spec. If you're especially concerned and are unwilling to accept the word of some dude on the internet (as well you shouldn't), review the manual that came with your Rossi (or go online for the PDF if you don't have it), if that fails, call the company.
Excellent!!
Great video. Thank you very much.
Thanks Long Hunter for your great tips.. They are very helpful!

Great Presentation
Great video, thanks.
Nice smooth action.

Good video.
You Sir are a Legit Cowboy, I mean that in the nicest possible way! I prefer “replica” weapons, like my Umarex CO2 “Cowboy Rifle” but I still learned a lot from your video. Thanks!
so nice guy,nice gun!!
Very good!
hello Jim....is there any advantages with large loop lever guns?
very good tips....Thanks
Excellent advise 👍. How do you keep from short cycling? Can you do this with a factory rifle or does it need to be modified? Can you still shoot fast and compete with Tang sight? I probably already asked too many questions . Lol Thanks for sharing
Great thanks!
never had a lever action, your video made me wanna get one! nice video sir! thank you ! also wonder what rifle you are using ? which caliber?
Thanks!
What is the proper length of pull that works with this style of shooting, l find that mounting my rifle how you describe with my chest facing forward and not at a slant causes both by arms to be over reaching, seems like i would need to cut off quite a bit stock length, am i wrong?
whats better for this, 38 or 45 colt ? cuz i know if you use bp 45 rounds it wont have much recoil correct?
Dry firing a rimfire isn't a great idea, however the rest of the info is great. Thanks!
Looks easy!!! Takes a lot of practice tho!!! lol Thanks very much for the video!!!!
Can we get a video on reloads on a henry 1860? I have a fondness for mine but reloads are a pain.
Dayum thats sum fast shootin
What size round m how many did they hold??
Hello from Brazil
What model and caliber lever action is in this video?
what rifle is that? the action on it looks realllllyy smooth! mines not even close to that haha
Very good, now do the same lever action/shooting with the 45-70 govmt. ammo Now seriously, really impressive shooting!!!
Who or what company works on those guns to make them so smooth??? Anyone???
0:12 I couldn't even see him pull the trigger until I slowed the video down. OMG.

Good information, and what type of Rifle was that?

Maurice Haynes Looked like a 1873 no telling what caliber.
Excellent tips! Thank you. Is it OK to dry fire a Rossi M92?
Have my off hand as far forward as possible? I'll only do it literally either if the hand guard allows or if there's no hand guard at all.
is that a 20" or 24.25"?
If there’s gun store in Indonesia,i will having fun
I have a Rossi M-92. Would I be able to use that in instead of '73? Their actions might be to stiff for the type of fast mounted lever/trigger toggling method you're employing(?).

steelgila I've got a Rossi R92 as well. I've pretty much given up the idea of it being a match winner since I don't believe it van be short stroked. I could be wrong though

Several years ago a saw where a kid and I mean kid probably 10-11 years old. Had a 73 chambered in .38 worked over to be short stroked. Cost like $10,000.00 dollars when finished. The kid was good I have to say.
He probably got the action slicked by himself or a gunsmith for competition. I hear Henry's have the slickest action out of the box, though.
whats that thing chambered in? looks like a 22
(dont mind me taking notes here) 4:10 for Skadi lever action rifle drawing
28 noobs didn't like this AWESOME KNOWLEDGE!
Lomg way with my uberti short stroke compet lever gun ... just a long way.
I didn’t know they had Nylon back in 1873 to wrap on your lever action! 😮 Should be called “sorta cowboy action shooting” Other than that nit pick excellent advice!
Why did I wait so long
Isn't dry firing a rifle bad for the fire pin?
I’m new to lever action rifles, so please excuse me. Can anyone tell me if there is a significance to adding one last cartridge into the chamber at the end like he did?
@Isopherus

I believe it's because when competition shooting there is a penalty if you don't hit every target so he probably missed one and had to load another round to hit the last target.
Your rifle appears to have a very short cycle action. My Marlin Cowboy needs to be racked fully otherwise you risk jamming the rounds. Great video on the technique to maintain stability, very useful for quick turning targets!

That's because he had his rifle customized with a "Short Stroke" job by a professional gunsmith. That allows his to shave off time shooting in competition.

Exit Only that version is made with a short stroke . I am trying to find out which one it is .
@ECUporkchop

Almost seems like cheating. I'm no expert on history, but I feel like they didn't have short stroke rifles in the late 1800's, at least not in substantial calibers. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's Cowboy Action Shooting, and I feel modifications like that defeat the purpose.
u say uberti is the best for cas? what about henry or winchester? Great video. AND Im 63 yrs old.

With my Marlin 1895 CBA 45-70 you would not be able to lever the rifle easy like yours! It actually causes pain when you lever fast!!
3:13 He said to dry fire the gun at a spot on the wall in the house lol
Sir please make a video on locking and unlocking of this rifle
try that with 45-70 :)

Good tips. Bad audio.
0:11 holy shit
That lever looks a little flimsy. If you work it too fast , it might break.
Lever guns are like toddlers...they can run faster than they appear!
Looks like an AR-15 too me.
You would never be able to do that with a new 1895 CB 45-70 marlin. The lever is way too stiff to even begin thinking about doing what I see here in this video. If you attempted to do that with a new Marlin your fingers would be bleeding!!
