Mounting an A990 Hemi Scoop | 1965 Dodge Coronet 500

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've been debating about getting a scoop and mounting it on the Coronet's hood. There are plenty of reasons not to do it including road damage and the fact that it will not be functional and act as a big parachute.
Coolness overcame reason and common sense so here we go...

Nice work. My favorite scoop for the older ‘60s cars. Glad you chose the stock height. 👍

Thanks man, yeah all that it's going to do is catch air anyway. For racing I would have stuck a tall post in like the racers do.

Thanks for the info on the scoop and the install. That’s exactly what my 65 satellite needs.

I thought you did just fine, Chuck - and there is always the option to just install studs on the scoop instead, anyways. I also feel like a center post, set back a couple inches from the opening and painted flat black, would be prudent. Nice job as usual my friend! - Ed on the Ridge

Great job chuck! those scoops always looked great on cars.I have a friend that has one on his 68 cuda with a 600 HP gen 3 hemi. Its very understated but just breaks up the hood line enough.

You might have thought so. Sled City sells the same scoop with studs.

That scoop is really gonna look good on your car. it would really be cool if you could use nut zerts instead of them clips.

I didn't think about nut zerts, I'm going to explore that one. Probably need to put a washer under it when you pull it through. It would be a lot cleaner, not that anyone would know.

@Chuck_House_of_Mopar I just wasn't sure what they would do in fiberglass, maybe one of your buddies has did it before.

Only thing you would have to dead on the placement. Another guy said something about studs in scoop.

I put one of those on my 64 savoy and it's always fun drilling a perfectly good hood. I have cut hoods for 2x4s and blowers so it's a slow process. Best advice is go slow and check and check and check your work. Looks like you got it. I take my hole saw with the 5/8 " bit and carefully cut the superstructure bracing away so the bolts go flat hood sheet metal. Reason is the bolts will loosen up if you don't. You shouldn't need the center brace because yours is not functional if it was then I would say yes. So what motor are you putting in this hotrod?

I was searching on the internet for some "tips" before I started this but didn't have much luck. That would have been good to know. I was going to do a 451 but now it's probably going to be a 470. The car came with a 361.

Hey Chuck, Is it possible that to use ALL of your "correct" screws... It was meant for you to drill those others that pass through the lower structure/panel with your hole saw bit? With all of my A and B body scoop experience, the factory never "pulled" the lower panel with the studs and nuts. ALWAYS had the larger hole knocked out around the hardware. Though I Have NEVER touched one of those A-990 scoops... What do you Think?

  • @Chuck_House_of_Mopar

That would work for sure, I may end up drilling outside the lip of the inner structure since I would need to get a socket on there. I'd like to use those factory bolts.

No, not on this one. There is a grill that could be hacked up for that in Kossuth's salvage yard.
