MOUNTAIN BIKE SKILLS FOR OVER 40 | HOW TO WHEELIE | Can Lee get his Wheelie on?

In "Mountain Bike Skills For Over 40 | How To Wheelie", I'm joined by Lee from LeeLikesBikes.com who wrote the bestselling book on how to mountain bike. Yet somehow this MTB racer, shredder and teacher hasn't learned how to wheelie. He even has a chapter in his mountain bike book on wheelies but he had to get a friend to be in the photos. But it's actually not odd at all. We all pick up different skills and usually spend time focusing on what we're best at. Still it bothered Lee not to wheelie his mountain bike and he has tried many times in the past to fill this whole in his MTB skills. It's time to try again and this time to bring to bear everything Lee has learned about hacking our brains and our emotions to get more rewire our brains and keep the MTB progression.
We're running this experiment on Lee himself and the results and the insights should help anybody learning wheelies or really anything on a bike.

For the longest time I believed the "wheelie gene" was real. Finally, I got so frustrated I decided to practice every day until I could do it. I didn't realize until then, that my practice was never consistent and focused, and once it was the improvements started to happen. It took about two months of very focused daily practice but finally at 40 years old I can wheelie pretty much forever. It took me a lot longer than some people, and maybe faster than others, but once I got it who cares how long it took!

This kind of tutorial is amazing. No cheap talking, just the important things. I'm over 40, and learning to wheelie and looking for learning manuals, someday. My wheelies sucks. BUT, one day I was pedalling over tall grass and could keep a wheelie for several meters, because of the high rolling resistance of the grass. That was a special moment! When YOU have the experience that IT EXISTS and CAN BE DONE, it's a mind blowing thing. I use this idea when teach young kids learning to ride their bikes without those tiny baby wheels: I talk about "finding the balance point", center them on the bike and drop the bike for 1 or 2 seconds, so they FEEL that there is really a point that the bike could keep itself up, flying over the balance point. Their minds then open and now they believe. Same when you're 40... cheers :)

However, if you watch the end of a road race, especially sprint everyone congratulates the winner not just his team. Rant over, now I need to find a morning with no kids and no rain and I'll try and crack wheelies in my 40's. Thanks for the tips.

Yoo this video make me smile a lot.. i could manual with skateboard over 100ft. But couldn't even do a wheelie on a bike. Guess I've learn a lot from you guys. Thanks

Love you guys- I’m 50 and have never been able to wheelie, on MTB or even MX. I’ve just followed your advice and done a 4 pedlar at the balance point. Stoaked Thankyou 😍

Yes! I’m now encouraged to keep trying because I’m pretty new to MTB at 37, so it’s all new and wheelies are soooo frustrating for me. The step off to learn was super helpful. Now the list of stuff to learn: drops, manuals (also frustrating), and gnarly steep descents. Thanks for this video!

3 things I have now put in as focus on my practice is : arms straight, head up (chin up and looking forward)....and breathe. I found myself holding my breathe a lot. I am 50 now and it's baby steps but I am actually seeing results. Great video guys

Hey thanks I got so inspired I went outside straight after this video until I got rained off. Using the "brake drag point" method helped heaps, got some control going instead of just slamming the front down. Love your videos, subscribed from one I watched yesterday, looking forward to what's to come!

I love your videos! I too have been riding a unicycle since my pre-teens, and have been trying to wheelie for as long, with limited success. I still feel like I’m cheating, although I’ve now found my balance point on my fat bike. I think the wide tires and support of the sidewalls really helps. Your video has inspired me to try on my “skinny” tire mtb. Keep up the good work, and thank you!
