EASIEST WAY TO BUNNY HOP - Anyone Can Do This!!

Спорт

In this video we teach you what we believe is the easiest way to bunny hop, in fact we believe ANYONE at ANY age can do this.
In this video I'm joined by Chase Willie & Matt Cordova as we deconstruct the bunny hop to help you learn how to do it like a pro!
This fundamental skill is all about timing as opposed to brute force, we go step by step to explain the mechanics of how you can simplify your hops & make them easier than ever, whether you're just getting started or looking to refine your technique this video will get you up to speed in no time. This tutorial is in fact so simple our new friend Aiden who is 9 years old implemented the steps & did a bunny hop FIRST TRY - not even kidding! It was so rad.
Although we demonstrate this skill on BMX bikes it is fundamentally the same on all platforms of bicycle including but not limited to dirt jumper, hardtail trail bike and full suspension trail bike - this same bunny hop method works ALL bikes.
Watch the video, head to a flat parking lot & give it a try! Don't hesitate to reach out with questions.
Remember; don't get discouraged - a well executed bunny hop is the result of a lot of practice & repetition. Dialing in this skill will make riding endlessly more JoyFULL.
Happy Hopping,
-Mike

    This is a cool video. I must say, I was disappointed when Bogusky moved on from the channel. I stayed on. More in hope rather than belief that better things will follow. I've always been a trail shredder and never really concentrated on learning the hop. I became interested in increasing my skills and have seen a GAZILLION tutorials, all mostly conflicting. Alex and Lee's was the BEST description I found, but now this update ROCKS! Making the concept straight forward and understandable really makes a difference. I have yet to conquer the hop, but at least I know which way to learn. THANKS GUYS!!

    Just came across this video today. Gave the standing jumps a trial run in the house with my wife and one of my sons Later I was out on a short ride with the same son (8yo), came across a flat spot on the road, gave it a shot and was able to bunny hop 4 or 5 time. I didn’t get a ton of air but I’ve never been able to before and my son was super impressed. Thanks!

    Great vid guys! For me the biggest mistake is listening to the people who say that if you learn how to lift front and rear wheels separately then it is only thing you have to do is to link them together in rapid succession. Maybe it feels like it for the people knowing how to bunnyhop but it is wrong in my opinion. I am mountainbiker for 25 years and I can lift both wheels quite high (no clips) if necessary on technical trails but I could not bunnyhop at all. Then I came across nice bikepark with excellent tabletop jumps for beginners, really nice, low speed, low risk ones but with relatively steep lips. This is where I've learned completely new to me attitude to the bike, to bring the bars towards me, to pop from the lip, then to push bars forward to land nicely. And then I've noticed that I can replicate that on the flat as well in a form of a bunnyhop. I still suck at them but I think the drills with a broom that you guys show may help!

  • @JoyOfBike

    @JoyOfBike

    That's rad it was such a natural progression for you!! Bike parks, skateparks, & pump tracks are the best teachers in my opinion - the skills you learn there easily apply to the trail. Report back after some practice, would love to hear if it helps! Happy hopping amigo.

    I'm right there with you piast. Same scenario. Adding this skill to the arsenal seems like a great way to improve overall trail riding, and adding to the confidence clearing jumps and tables in parks. Putting this new attitude as you say to work is exciting. Like you, I still suck but this video gives me great confidence I can master the hop.

  • @chasewillie.1

    @chasewillie.1

    For sure! That's the thing-it's totally possible to get into the air by pulling both wheels off the ground at the same time, even on flats. But it sounds like you've noticed that it allows for so much more control when applying this skill to obstacles like jumps if you are doing it appropriately. Glad it was able to click for you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Thanks guys - it was really doing my head in why I couldn't get the bars to come in to my waist and it was because I was leaning back to initiate the hop. I'd seen other people's instructions that showed them pulling the bars in to their hips (and watched people that were good at bunny hops do it too) but I couldn't figure out how to do it myself. Your off the bike exercise was a light bulb moment .. the dragging the bars up and into to your waist\hips as you launch yourself vertically upwards is totally natural when you do it off the bike. So what I need to do on the bike all makes sense now.

I could always do manuals a bit and my hops were decent and loved to boost them off stuff like speed bumps and the little curved corners of drive ways and side walks. Just got back into bmx and felt a little rusty but your tips were great! especially the plyametric jumps. it's almost the same jump I've used to teach new skaters how to ollie. similar physics, except using your front foot to level the board instead of the arms with the bike. anyways this video was super helpful. • @JoyOfBike

    Great observation! We actually intentionally left that out, by way of correct form you shouldn’t really be doing anything with your feet. By executing the plyo jump & putting energy straight down into the bottom bracket / ground, anchoring your hands on the bars & tucking your knees to your chest as you reach the peak of your plyo explosion the pedals should follow your feet. If your feet are popping off it’s indicative of a couple possible things: 1) your feet are too far forward or backward on your pedals, the ball of your foot should be over the spindle of your pedal 2) you’re not hopping from a central position (either too far forward or backward) & not putting energy directly into the ground Scooping is something that’s VERY misleading, your feet naturally tilt if you’re jumping vertically off the ground reference the clip at 4:01, you’ll notice the clip without the bike my feet are in the infamous ‘scooping’ position - but this is a byproduct of correct form, not something I’m intentionally doing off or on the bike. I hope that makes sense? Hope this helps! Thanks for tuning in amigo 🫶🏻 -Mike

    Cool Video. Question: Is it a straight jump up or is there a backwards movement component to the jump? Watching the video back in slow motion, it appears that there is a pull to get the front wheel up first, or is this just part of anchoring your arms properly?

  • @JoyOfBike

    @JoyOfBike

    26 күн бұрын

    The jump is pretty much straight up, or identical to the plyometric jump! The front wheel up is a byproduct of anchoring the arms, if you're actively pulling up your hop won't reach it's full height potential.

  • @joncov
    @joncovАй бұрын

    Great tutorial, can be followed 100%, the focus on the rear wheel and on "jumping" are spot on 6:28 - you CAN bunny hop higher then jumping plyometrically for 2 reasons: inflated tire acts as a spring and there is some dynamics from squating down upward bike&rider movement results from Newton's third law that states that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction btw bunny hop is based on the same general principle as ski jumping :) "springy" tires inflated to optimal pressure help a lot to increase the height, this pressure is somewhat between 30 and 40 psi depending on rider's weight

    Hi. Thanks for this video. It has helped a lot. I've watched many bunny hop videos online, and this felt very actionable. I liked the off-the-bike exercises. I have a *question*. It seems that some people use the movement of a manual to start the bunny hop, while you guys seem to take a slightly different approach. Am I 'reading' this correctly? Or did I miss the point? Thanks a lot. Martin.

  • @JoyOfBike

    Great question, the movement of the manual sets you too far back - although it can *look* similar applying force directly into the ground through this plyometric jump ends up being far more effective than using leverage to pivot the bike & get the front wheel off the ground, especially when it comes to getting higher hops.

Secondly when I try to bend my knees to pull the rear wheel (I surely can do it) it feels I straightening them only to hit the ground whith whell. And thirdly when I don'e bend them well I often land in kinda standing manual which teffifying as well. Whould be nice to get some advices.

    From my experience this can be indicative of two things: 1) not applying force directly into the ground, this usually occurs when you're leaning back as you go into the hop. 2) riding too heavy on your toes, try to focus having the ball of your foot on the concave or spindle) of your pedal as much as possible I'd start here: Practice the plyo jump demonstrated in this video & really focus on taking off and landing on the same mark, essentially straight up & right back down, then apply that same jump while on the bike.

    Without seeing it, I'm assuming the timing of bringing your knees to your chest & pushing the bars forward may be just a little early. Try to execute that movement at the peak of your hop, same thing goes for jumping - try to use every bit of the lip, often times we pull off too early. Video yourself & see if your back wheel is making it to the very top of the lip - if not practice trying to use the WHOLE lip, this makes jumping way less work!

    Valid questions - the reality is we're trying to keep these as SIMPLE as possible so anyone can learn. Standing with your feet spread on the ground & doing the vertical jump can be difficult because the way your weight is dispersed - although your stance is this way on the bike your weight is going through the bottom bracket, essentially like having your feet side by side. As for a scrap bike, without having a wheel on the ground/axle in the bike to pivot around practicing this would be REALLY difficult, & a piece like this is out of reach for most...however everyone has a broom stick laying around!

    Can you demonstrate the same on a MTB? I don't think that the technique is going to be exactly the same. Here, the lean back is not very pronounced because the bike is so short that your hips are already basically over the rear wheel. To do that on a longer bike you need to lean back significantly from your neutral position.

  • @JoyOfBike

    @JoyOfBike

    Chase does a hop on a hardtail MTB at 18:14! The position & application is the same across all platforms, although there is less leverage on the MTB. Leaning back or transferring weight backward will ultimately make the hop harder as you're not applying that plyometric jump force directly into the ground but laterally when you're in a leaned back position. Think of a bunny hop on any bike like standing up out of a chair, it's way easier if you apply force directly downward on your legs from a 90* sitting position, say with you legs at a 60* it almost becomes impossible.

    If you’re leaning back or going into a manual position for a bunny hop you’re no longer putting force directly into the ground to hop up. A good exercise to understand why a manual position is wrong for the bunny hop is to sit in a chair with your legs at 90* (basically a squat) & then stand up just using your legs- pretty easy, right? Now sit in that same chair with your legs at a 70* bend and try to stand up, it’s way more difficult…borderline impossible. Same thing happens when we go from putting our energy directly into the ground to sitting back & trying to pivot the bike up off the ground, you end up working way harder than you need to.

    The olympic lifts also use this exact same movement, and include a bar, and you do not pull the bar with your arms, you hold on to it as your legs generate extreme explosive force, and you just guide it upwards, and (in the snatch) at the same time you are throwing your body under the bar as it moves upwards, until the bar is focused over your mechanical center of gravity, where you stop it, and then push your self upwards. It is so so similar to your bunny hop training move, almost exactly, super interesting.
