Motorvate's DIY Garage Quick Tip #1: Engine Cover Warning

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Anytime you remove the engine cover on a G37 or 370z, make sure the center bolt's metal insert (or top hat) is in place. This prevents the bolt from being screwed in too far and puncturing a hole in your intake manifold.
If yours is missing, here is a quick check to see if you have punctured a hole into the plastic intake manifold:
Start the car with the cover off and place your finger over the center brass insert on the intake manifold. If you feel any suction, you have poked a hole into it.
A replacement insert can be purchased from the dealer. Infiniti calls it a "Engine Cover Sleeve", part number 16566-JK20A. The are about $8 each.
On re-assembly, add a little thread lock (Loctite 242/Blue) to the center bolt when reassembling.
From now on, anytime you remove the cover, ALWAYS have a quick check to make sure all the sleeves are in place and you won't poke a hole into your intake manifold... which is a good thing :)

    Thank you! It is a very useful video, I was very frustrated trying to find leak. You have saved me tones of pain, I was getting the lean codes and started replacing the air duct parts. Mine cover had all the sleeves, but seems like it was overtightened long time ago so it punctured the intake. So I took a piece of wire and slid into the hole. Oh gash, the wire went 2 times length of the bolt.

    Nice tip, I had NO IDEA that this could be a source of a vacuum leak. Really good info. Those little sleeve/collars fall off the cover and I’m sure I am missing at least one. I may just epoxy it back in place on the cover itself so it never falls off.

    any tips on removing the grommet and replacing it? while i was trying to force back in the metal retainer you talk about in this video, it absolutely refused to go in no matter how hard i tried to force it. (top left bolt). the bolt itself had white at end of it... i eventually realized the grommet had been manipulated and wont fit the metal retainer anymore, since the other retainers would go in and out of their grommets with ease. im ordering a new grommet now and im wondering how to even approach removing the busted one..? also, during this my hood struts decided to fail and the hood fell down onto my car, so i put the cover back on and have left it since. car is fine but im trying to fix this to OEM specs asap.

    Hey Usman Tahir, The engine cover's rubber grommet is a firm rubber. When the metal sleeve didn't go in, I wonder if the rubber grommet has got out of position and folder over? Have a close look at it and the metal sleeve, I suspect something is bent or out out position. To remove the grommet use a small screw driver, and push the outer edge to the center, reposition to the other side and you should be able to get it out with out much trouble. To put in the new one, do your best to pinch the rubber grommet (and try to fold it) insert one edge, and use the small screw driver to push it into position and it should lay flat. Good luck!

    Hey Daniel P, After about 30 minutes trying to find your part number, none of the sites showed the bolt/stud on the parts diagram. It may not be available as a separate part. You could see if the broken bolt could be pushed out and then find a replacement at the hardware store.... or just leave it as is. It won't hurt anything.

    I took mine off to vent any trapped air considering since our throttle body flaps are always open cuz of VVEL our intake tubes and intake manifold are always completely full of air as if we were flooring it and it probably doesn't make a big difference since the air gets used quickly but whateva.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    Hey sk8punk318, I did the same thing. My engine cover is in the house. Just a clarification on the VVEL system. The throttle body not always opened as Nissan/Infiniti told us. The throttle almost closes anytime we lift off the throttle. This is to ensure there is enough vacuum for the brake booster which gives us power brakes :) If you want to see for your self use a cheap OBD scanner and monitor the MAP PID (intake Manifold Air Pressure) . I think you might want to clean your throttle bodies (don't clean them if your car is a 2007 G35 or 350z!!) and do the 3 steps to get a proper idle: Throttle body clean: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4d_m5uPkrbPhKg.html After throttle body clean: kzread.info/dash/bejne/en2dw6hphsS6nLQ.html Good luck!

    Hey, I want to remove the cover and run without it. So does that mean that I have to have the Center bolt on?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you can remove the engine cover. I removed my engine cover about 4 years ago. For the centre bolt, if someone in the past has used a bolt too long, or lost the metal spacer and tightened it, the bolt can push into the intake manifold and puncture it. With the cover removed, start the engine and use your finger to check if the bolt hole has air/vacuum passing through it (place your finger over the hole and if a different sound or a vacuum is felt, the intake has a hole). If it does, just put the bolt back without the cover and all is good. If it doesn't all is good :)

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    With the engine idling, place your finger over the centre hole. If the sound doesn't change and you don't feel suction, you don't need a screw there. If you need one or want one anyways, I think it is an M6 bolt, with a 10mm head. Make sure it isn't too long, or it will punch through into the intake manifold.

    @@MotorvateDIY forgot to ask so is it okay if I put in the center bolt back without the engine cover on ?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Again: With the engine idling, place your finger over the centre hole. If the sound doesn't change and you don't feel suction, you don't need a screw there. From the factory, the screw hole doesn't go into the intake. When the metal spacer is lost or a long bolt is used, it punctures the intake manifold. Then you need a screw there to prevent a vacuum leak and engine drive ability problems.

    Hey NjBoRi 973, I understand... Since the HR was only made for 2007 and 2008, it is not very common and it the part suppliers assume it is the same as a 2006, since many of the parts are - just not the engine. Good luck getting it running in top condition! Quick TIP: If yours is a 2007 DON"T CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODIES. The procedure (idle air volume learning) used to set the idle won't run to completion and the idle may be high or unstable. The only fix I know of is to update the ECU at the dealer or Eugene at www.yelp.ca/biz/enthusiast-auto-care-concord

  • @MotorvateDIY

    Hey DarkSyne, Plastic intake manifolds are not all bad. They are lighter, more flexible in design and don't hold the engine heat as much. Just about every car made in the last 5 years has a plastic manifold for those reasons. What happened here is just "one of those" things that can surprise us... Hopefully this video will have people do a quick check to make sure nothing is missing.
