*Great little trolling motor **enjoyable.fishing** recommend had it hooked up to my 15 foot old town canoe and it pushed it pretty good with me and my son (220 pounds each).*

Had the xi5 105. Got the extended warranty too. Good thing I did. Replaced motor, gps board twice, mother or main board twice and the shaft. Two weeks ago died again. MG warranty shop called MG and went to bat for me again. MG said they’d send me a new one. But today....received a letter from mercury saying I had exceeded the warranty dollar limit in repairs under my warranty and they canceled my warranty effective two days ago and they were nice Singh to include the warranty contracts with a big yellow highlighted section. I was shocked. And Pi**ed. Went and bought an Ultrex today. Thank you and goodbye Motorguide.

You must have some horrible consumer laws in your country if thats the case. You'd have no issue at a replacment or full refund in your circumstances if you lived in Australia, even if the waranty was expired and it could be proven that the product components have a history of falure .

I got the xi5 and 14 month later it died from a control board issue. Found out the nearest motorguide service center is 2.5 hours away. I don't live in BFE I live in Ft Lauderdale. Called motorguide and was told to buy the motor and install it myself. There are 3 minn kota service centers within 30 minutes of me. If you live in South Florida, motorguide's warranty is like Obama Care, you have insurance but you cant use it.

Are you comparing the Minnkota trolling motors that have the improved GPS (puck) heading sensor? I believe this was implemented on year 2017 models on up.

I have not personally used the minnkota with the upgrade, however If the minnkota has fixed the gps on the 2017-18 and up models and it holds as tight or tighter than the motorguide now, I would still consider the other things... noise...speed of head turning...compatibility with your fishfinder.

Before I purchased my Minn-kota Ultrex I watched five head to head tests with Motor Guide. Minn-Kota won them all. They consistently held a one to two foot lock. Motor guide held a two to three foot lock.

The new minn-kota's may hold a better lock than the older ones, I don't have any complaints with how tight of a spot xi5 holds, the things I would consider at this point if I were to buy another one would be: how quiet is it?, how fast does it turn side to side? does it communicate with your gps? (lowrance=motor guide, humminbird=minn-kota)

I've owned a Minn Kota Ulterra 80 lb saltwater for years. It never held a one to two foot lock. I was lucky if it held a 15 foot lock. Still own it and it has many great features but C'mon man a one foot lock

I wish there was a MG motor that follows contour lines, like the MK does with HB. I have Lowrance, don't want to switch to HB.

  • @davidchristophercorr5486

it does, but the contours on navionics are generally not even close to the HB ACL,that you make yourself,,all you do is record and save the route that you just ran,for up to 4 miles, and it will keep it in memory

@@davidchristophercorr5486 Not the same thing. I want it to follow a specific depth contour on the map, not what I steer it manually with. My Platinum Navionics mapping is pretty good.

Def not true, both use gps and hold well. Only thing different is design lines and durability/malfunctions. Used both extensively and both work the same when working well.

I have watched that before, all I can tell you is that I've used them, so I suggest you go use them and you will see what happens. Also because of the minn kota problems they have (it seems) put together a campaign to try and convince people that they have made a better one, the bottom line is I use mine all the time in the wind and waves and their is no need to improve the gps capability of the Motorguide. Minn Kota has made improvements (they say) on the new ones which I have not used their brand new ones (2017).

Another example for you, I actually dropped my boat keys in the water in the middle of galveston bay 7-8' of water and my motorguide was on anchor, I jumped in after I took my shirt off and got all the stuff out of my pockets and swam down about 5 times and found my keys, the only thing that saved my keys is the boat was not moving and I just kept going down at the same distance from the boat until I found them!
