Motorcycle Phone Mount Comparison: SP Connect, Quad Lock, Oxford Cliqr and a Chinese-made Cheapie!

What is the best motorcycle phone mount?
✴️▶️ Motorcycle Phone Mount: With Quad Lock's recently released vibration dampener now in hand, I took to the road to compare four motorcycle mounts. Here's a quick shoot-out between SP Connect, Quad Lock, Oxford Products' Cliqr and a Chinese cheapie from Amazon. Which one would I opt for? 😉
Both SP Connect's anti-vibration module and Quad Lock's vibration dampener were installed.
THE CHINESE-MADE CHEAPIE: Showing a lot of flex, which could help reduce vibration, this mount appears to be a good option for the price. A plastic brace has two protruding teeth to attach to the rubber belt around the handlebar; it mounts in seconds. The phone can be located in the strapping and into the locking module. Of the four I am reviewing, this is the only one that can rotate through 360º, stopping at any angle. Putting it into use, my fear is the rubber strap could, and probably would, perish over time. If it snaps, the phone could disappear in an instant. In short, it merely does a job for the price, and you can’t ask any more than that, but I recommend buying an additional durable case.
OXFORD PRODUCTS' CLIQR: From around £25, the Cliqr is excellent value if you’re after something practical. The mount is easy to fit and can be fitted in seconds. Two plastic tabs are supplied with extremely strong 3M self-adhesive; use one as a spare or attach it to another device. While the sales material shows it being applied to the back of the phone, I strongly suggest buying a durable phone cover and sticking the tabs to it instead. With a simple click, the tab locks into the mount. The phone can be mounted either in portrait or landscape. A button on the mount releases it with ease. The mount head can’t be angled, limiting the phone’s position, but Oxford Products offer a variety of mounts that may suit your bike better. The mount’s arm does offer sufficient flex, which should help to reduce vibrations. Overall, this is ideal for around-town riders who need to attach and remove their devices frequently and quickly.
QUAD LOCK: Quad Lock is a well-designed piece of kit, using glass-filled nylon for high rigidity and mechanical strength for a high degree of toughness. It offers a variety of options to suit many motorcycles. With an Allen hex key, it only takes a few minutes to install. The multiple-mounting configurations of the stem can be adjusted to find the perfect angle for viewing. The protective impact-resistant phone case is inset with four teeth which would secure it to the dual-stage locking mount. It can then be rotated 360º at 90º intervals to be viewed in portrait and landscape instantly. The spring-loaded locking mechanism lever releases the phone with ease. Additional mounting options and accessories include a ball adaptor, mirror, fork stem mounts, and wired and wireless charging. For harsh conditions, you can add an extra protective cover. Using Quad Lock attached to its Vibration Dampener, could this be an excellent accessory for any touring trip?
SP CONNECT: Another popular mounting system is SP Connect. Made from high-quality aircraft-grade aluminium, it is a very compact package. With an Alley key, it is fitted in just a couple of minutes and can be angled to any position the rider desires. The phone case offers a built-in mechanism which locates on the static mount and twists 90º to lock. While the SP Connect is the easiest to mount and remove, it can only lock into portrait OR landscape, not both. If in portrait and prefer landscape, be armed with an Allen key to reposition the mount and rotate it 90º. A ‘stand’ is also supplied, which can correct the phone cover’s locking mechanism if it is found in an incorrect position. It is worth noting attachments are available for handlebars, such as those found on BMW’s RT - as such, it’s a favourite with MotoGusto’s editor. In more extreme conditions, an extra protective cover is available. With the anti-vibration device fitted, would I be confident of mounting my phone over many miles spent on the road?

    I've had a Quad lock on my M1200S for the past 4 years. Worth every penny. I do admit, it can give a false lock with only 2 tabs engaging in the socket but it is fairly obvious it's not seated properly. Also I bought the adhesive lock plate as they didn't offer the case for my phone model. The 3M adhesive is so strong it will forever be part of my phone case and hasn't degraded even through 5C to 35C days and riding in the sun and rain. Vibrations haven't been an issue even without the damping part.

    Thanks for your message. I agree - great value for money. Frequency incompatibility issues only affect certain bikes with certain phones and even then, the chances are small. The voice of social media, can distort the truth. Still, good to see Quad Lock and SP Connect developing products to counter this.

    I think for me being on a CBT and trying to save for my full A licence that Oxford is great, I love the rubber to help with vibrations as well, as well I never use a case for my phone so I could just buy a cheap one to stick the back on to. • @o75uk

    @o75uk

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey fellow Brightonian - well even though I do just live along the coast. 😁 Yes there are frequency/vibration incompatibility issues but appears to only be affected by engines of certain motorcycles and particular models of smart phone; it can damage the camera stability feature. Regardless of mount used, it is only an extension to the handlebar so likely the phone could be damaged without something in place to suppress the vibrations. Quad Lock has been proactive to invest in R&D to develop a vibration dampener to stop vibrations from reaching the phone. It was released in September 2020. Even without a Vibration Dampener, my brother, a good friend and I have been using our iPhone 11 Pros riding KTM and Triumph without issues but we each bought one anyway for peace of mind. £15 is a small price to pay. Thanks for your comment Sam. 👍🏼

    It's not the 'wobbling' that affects viewing. That's all good. It's the higher frequency engine vibrations resonating through the frame and handlebars that can affect the sensitive image stabilisation features found in some later smartphones that's can be the main issue - hence vibration dampers.

    @o75uk

    Hi Daniel, thanks for watching and appreciated. Good question which I will gladly answer. The vibrations don't affect visual usability when looking at the screen - it's how engine vibrations could affect sensitive image stabilisation features found in current smartphones. This has been a huge concern for smartphone users considering which mount to use with their motorcycles. SP Connect and Quad Lock have been pro-active to develop anti-vibration products to dampen harmful frequencies that resonate from certain engines through the frame and handlebars which could ultimately damage the sensitive image stabilisation functionality. As such there was no need to keep the display on instead focusing on the phone mount features and benefits. I hope this helps.

    The downside to Quadlock is the price. At the time of this post, it’s over $130, for me to have the setup with the anti vibration thing. That seems a bit excessive for a little piece of plastic and a phone case. Let’s be honest here, that’s .50 of plastic and the only reason it cost that much is they beat everyone to market and are charging a premium to keep and elevate the brand. I’m sure it’s good, but not almost $150 good.

    Hi, M. P. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it. I'm sure many would agree with you; however, I see Quad Lock as good value for money. To buy the Quad Lock mount, phone case, and vibration dampener in the UK is just under £70. It is a well-designed piece of plastic that is easy to use, simple, safe, secure, strong and reliable. The research, design and development, using high-grade materials manufactured to deliver a quality product to serve a purpose and protect your device from damaging engine vibrations, speaks volumes in the vast quantities sold worldwide. Yes, there are cheaper alternatives, but you get what you pay for. At the end of the day, it's all down to personal choice and budgets, and I highlighted just a few of what is available. For me, I would rather spend a little more on a proven quality product which I still use today, than spend £1000 replacing a damaged iPhone.

    The dark looks like the air deflector attached in this vid. I changed it soon after. If you want to compare against clear, check my recent vids. Dark isn’t great. I prefer the light tint of the main screen.

    The first and Chinese holder I suspect wouldn’t last that long

    I wouldn’t either especially when I spotted RTW Roxy use one with perished rubber. Still, you get what you pay for. 😉

    I know. Bad isn’t it? Tall screens were never great with SMTs. I found an old deflector popped it on for one ride, realised how hideous it looked and replaced with a clear one from Puig. A lot better now. 👍🏼

    Hi Val, thanks for your comment but I've never heard of Rokform until you mentioned it. It appears to be sold in the US. We're in the UK. Maybe if I do another comparison video, I'll drop them a line if they sell to the UK and Europe too.

    haaaaaa screw oxford cliqr adhesive is a bad idea and if you go that route better off with the larger quadlock universal however adhesive do fail wether it be cold or heat they are not a good idea. The reason oxford wont show it on a case is with certain cases like tpu the adhesive doesnt stick well. I made a great magnet mount with metal plates under my thin tpu cover but on my new phone i use a slighty thicker case and although the magnets are really strong the force is not as good so quadlock for me

    May be a bad idea but the adhesive strength they supplied is phenomenal. I just had to revisit the tab on the back of my phone cover and still can't shift it. I think if this tab was on the back of my phone, it'll be a permanent feature. 😂 I'd avoid the use of magnets is it could effect the compass and magnetic sensors inside the phone which won't help GPS/location apps for example.
