Which motorcycle engine configuration is your favourite? Single, V-Twin, Parallel Twin, Flat Twin, Flat Four, Flat Six, Inline Four or Inline Six?
Thanks you for your comments! I do my best to keep up with them for the first few days after a video comes out, but due to the volume of comments on all of my videos, and to the general hustle and bustle of life, I must give up the fight after a while. If you are leaving a question four or more days after a video comes out I can't guarantee I'll see it, but perhaps one of my other viewers knows the answer and can help out. Thanks in advance to those who contribute and share their knowledge. Cheers and stay safe everyone!

Character and character building alright! I took a Honda NSR500 for a test ride in the 80's. Coming from litre sports bikes how bad could a little 500cc smoker be? Scared the figgin living crap outta me! That V4 2S didnt have a throttle as much as an on off switch attached to a nuclear device. Wind on throttle and nothing.. nothing.. nothing.. then BANG! Handlebars in the armpits, wheelie thru 2nd.. 3rd.. 4th.. frigging front wouldn't come down! I think some wee came out and I pootled back to the dealer in need of a cigarette and a Valium... My favorite design? The 5 cylinder radial mounted inside the front wheel. I stumbled across this design at the Motorradmuseum Heinz Luthringshauser, in Otterbach, Germany years ago. No clutch, no transmission, and the engine stopped when the bike did. Oddly enough, two or three manufacturers back in the 1920s tried this design. Of the more modern bikes, there are so many interesting designs. V-twins and parallel twins are my favorites. Simpler is better.

Great video! Having owned a lot of bikes, from 1 to 6 cylinders, I will say that the 270-degree parallelle twin is my favourite. Especially how Yamaha executed it in their MT07 (FZ07). Pity the rest of the bike did not stand up to that of the fantastic engine. I now have a counter-balanced inline four. I4 is to me the most boring engine design of them all, but I need the smoothness these days to prevent my digits from going numb.

Very interesting, informative and a video production masterclass - where did you get all that priceless old footage? Strange to say, having introduced it, Honda no longer has a V4 bike engine in production in Europe, favouring the parallel twin for many applications. Personally, I agree with you that a triple gives the best combination of low end torque and top end power. And they howl too!

I love a triple, especially the Triumph triple. It's a fun motor that is a blast low or high in the rev range with decent mids. It makes a most wonderous and unique sound, and has a very distinctive exhaust note. While not the most powerful of the engines out there, it holds its own, especially when the roads get twisty. As much as I do love a triple, I currently ride a Suzuki GSX-S750, and a Honda CTX700N when the girlfriend tells me to ride it and make sure it's ok. Great video. Thanks.

It doesn’t matter the engine layout if it’s got an engine 4 stroke or 2 stroke and is a bike I love it. Each engine layout has it advantages and characteristics. Saying that electric bikes are the ones that are on the nose for me with the lack of noise and vibration together limited riding distance and time being massive turnoffs. Have been riding more than 50 years and have ridden more bikes than I can remember and it still gives me a massive high getting out and enjoying the ride no matter what I’m on.

@@gerardmontgomery280 yes they did but the bike was killed off by emissions regulations ( that and some financial skullduggery at Norton sadly we had a repeat performance last year) The race bike if it hadn’t been british most probably wouldn’t have been allowed to race (it sprayed oil out which other riders complained about). The engine is very smooth but burns more fuel and used oil like a two stroke sadly a dead end (the rotor tip wear was fixed in the end). I believe that it was designed originally to power aircraft with the rotor staying still and the rest of the engine spinning round it as it had the advantages of light weight and few moving parts wear and tear is less of a problem with regular strip downs .

The latter I bought recently because I came across one that had been well looked after and I got it for £900 (about $1200 US or $1500 CAN). I honestly don't remember once even thinking about what type of motor was in the bike when purchasing them. Kind of like the F1 sound of the sport bike 4s. They sound cool when they come up on the rev limiter also. All I have are V-twins so I'm partial to them. My Twin Cam has 580 S&S cams so it does not have the potato idle, but at 3500 it comes alive.

Yeah, the Triumph Triple is fantastic but, hands down, my Honda VFR800 V4 VTEC sounded fantastic at idle on the driveway. It walked softly (quietly) and carried a big stick. Spin that thing up to 7000 rpm the engine goes from two valves operating per cylinder to four screaming valves and, what a rush! The sound out of those stock underseat pipes was addictive. Oh, and keep winding it up and it just kept getting better. Or, just sit on the driveway and listen to that unique staccato at idle and just simply admire it.

I've only ridden one L4, a CBR 600 F3, and it was in a short driveway, so I'll not talk about it. Since the great majority of bikes in Brazil are thumpers, that's what most of my bikes had, and I'd agree wholeheartedly with you if it wasn't for the 2 strokes thumpers. When it comes to twins, I've yet to experience a Moto Guzzi, but among the other configurations, the Boxer is the one that I like most. BTW, I still think that a Boxer 4, liquid-cooled and more compact would've been a winner for BMW, all the while maintaining their beloved quirkiness. 😉😋😁 Right now, the engine that I admire the most is the Triple. I've not ridden the new Triumph configuration, but both the 675 and the 800 were beasts and sounded the part. I can't see a Six in my future, because a really despise motorcycles car-sized. If I ever find a 6 cylinder 250, I'll make sure to try it out. 😉😉😉 As usual, a very entertaining video!

Thanks for the comment. I found the Moto Guzzi to be full of character but not too reliable. The inline four really needs to be experienced on the highway at high speeds. It's a hoot. Here in Canada two strokes are not legal for the streets. I totally agree that a flat four would make a great motor, especially for a sport touring bike.

2:50 I'm pretty sure it's lightness that makes single-cylinder engines good at hill climbing. Torque has nothing to do with momentum. What thumpers need momentum for is to keep turning between power strokes without assistance from other cylinders.

V4 for me all the way. My only V4 bike has been an '84 honda magna 750 which I bought to upgrade from my beginner rebel 250. Sadly that bike got run over by a truck. I will certainly own another 80s honda V4 bike at some point. Either another 750 or the larger 1100. I own a z900 right now, even though it is twice the bike the magna ever was, something about that V4 makes me want another. If honda ever reboots the Magna or Sabre line of bikes with a modern V4, they have a buyer right here.

Even cylinder numbers are naturally more balanced than odds. Doesnt make them better just less complicated and more general purpose. Odd number cylinders generally make power at higher revs. Really noticeable in the 3 cyl car world now more than bikes.

My first bike was a beautiful , brand NEW: 1981 Honda CX500,,,,,, loved the sound, the torque,,,,,,nice and broad range. Then, my 1st 4 cyl. a '75 Honda CB400F, S/S. low down it's a "DAWG",,,, but wow, for a little-bitty 4 banger,,,,, the SOUND, and the power band comes on at 6k........goes right on upto and past 10K RPMS...... sounds like an F-1 racer..... but not as much as the CBX.......Between those 2 engines, I love.. Nope, don't have a single, or inline/opposed twin,,,,,, just for me, I love the inline 4, and that water cooled , transverse V-2.......... And this video in a nutshell shows why eletronic motorcycles will never have the same passion and cult fallowing that a combination motorcycles have! People die defending their favourite engine configuration and it applications in the real world. Now I know an electric motor can mimic the power and torque delivery of any combustion configuration but it will be as fake as fake virtual reality. People love their bikes because of what engine they have and what noise they make plus what kind a power and torque delivery they produce. I have been lucky to own a BMW boxer flat twin(R1100S) a Triumph straight triple (Daytona 955i) a Suzuki straight four (GSXR1000K4) and now a transverse L twin in a Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400. And all I can say I loved them all. They all felt different but good in their own unique way. And the idea thet soon all of them will be replaced by a electricit motor that yes has grate torque and power but now gears no sweet spot to keep the revs at to get the best of your engine makes me very sad. Great video as usial keep them coming!! Pozdrowienia z UK

Thanks for the comment. One reason I can't get into electric bikes is lack of shifting. I'm sure if electrics are mandated the manufacturers will come up with something to make them feel more traditional, but you're right, it won't be the same. That's why I'm taking care of my bikes religiously. I expect them to last forever.
