Every time I see any thing about an XJ650 I whip myself mercilessly for selling my 1982. Best bike I ever had.

No need to take arm off shaft when replacing cover. There is a super easy technique which is hard to describe here but very easy to do. Basically you replace the cover and draw it close turning the arm which draws it in close. Then to align the two marks you turn the arm in the opposite direction which pushes the cover out a bit. You push the arm just until the gear slips a tooth and do that a few more times until the two marks are lined up when turned in opposite direction and cover drawn in. turn in the other direction to draw the cover back in. So I did the clutch plate exchange. Not sure if I lined the dot up like you mentioned. How bad is that/ What will happen?

The center nut behind the plate on my xj is loose and is making a noise any idea what the torque is? Making the noise when the clutch is grabbed. And while in gear engaged

What is that piece of steel you check at 8.10?I do not have that in mine.I am trying to figure out why I cannot shift into neutral when the engine is running on my bike. When the engine is off I can do it.

Hello. I have a 1982 Seca like yours. I need to do the clutch plates as well. Did you replace the steel rings as well? I was told I should, looks like you used the old ones. That's cool.

Yep I used old ones. There was nothing wrong with mine.

Very useful video. I am building a cafe out of a 1980 XJ. I have noticed when I have it in gear and pull the clutch lever I can push the bike but not as freely as In neutral.any ideas what causing this?

Sounds like the clutch plates have a little bit if drag between them. Engine oil flush and good quality oil change may help. If it is a very subtle difference between being in neutral and in gear with clutch in this maybe normal as there is more rotating mass in the latter. If engine has been sitting a long time a dragging clutch is common. It needs to be ridden, and maybe fresh oil. Fresh oil is always a good thing. I'm not a mechanic. This what I would do after years of experience.

@@taptapindustries2580 Thanks for the prompt reply. I took the clutch plates a part oiled them and just put it back together now. The top end of the engine has been rebuilt and had fresh oil in it. The bike was sitting for over 5 years :-(thanks again

@@milanmarko1771 Hey dude. I have a 1981 Yamaha xj750 seca with similar setup. One thing I've found is make sure you use either motorcycle oil or Rotella T4 because it has the proper certs for a wet clutch. If you use synthetic engine oils you will experience some slip and if you use car oils you experience grabbing. Just thought I'd pass that along.

How many km.or miles on the xj650.before this.service becomes necessary. There is 55000km or around 34000 miles. I dont notice any clutch slipping. But am thinking bike will accelerate better if I replace with stiffer springs and heavy duty clutch plates?

Mine needed doing. It was slipping. But my XJ650 has over 124,000 ks on it. But yeah, I imagine stiffer springs and heavy duty clutch plates would allow for harder launches. Allowing for higher revs when releasing the clutch, with better grab. This engine really only builds power in the higher rev range so not a bad idea, I guess. But obviously riding harder puts more wear on all the related components, heavy duty or not.

Were you concerned about your gasket goo getting inside the engine? Do you allow it to dry first?

There is always that risk. I use it very sparingly. And place cover on carefully. The sealant is wet when I put it together

I have my headers off and was going to have them cermic coated. That is until I saw you pained yours. I have been having getting parts power coated, it looks nice. I requested route 66 red. Wish I could show you a picture. Stephen@@taptapindustries2580
