This is honestly a great bit of kit. Much easier to assemble than you'd think and, after a couple of goes loading the bike, you'll be more than familiar with getting it on and off. Forget about having a fixed trailer taking up space in your garage/driveway - this thing loads onto a couple of decent sized shelves.

steffydog1 To be honest I've yet to use it (plans too later this month) so don't have anything further to add to the review - there is no doubt it is expensive so I agree with you on that front....I went for the smaller wheels, don't really see much advantage of the larger ones. Great stuff, I've used mine for a thousand mile round trip to Scotland now, works a treat....great little trailer (but expensive) - glad to have been of service!

TMF, I spoke to Julia this morning and as you say they are very helpful indeed. After her advice I decided to order the 8" wheels as most people do according to her. The trailer height only varies very little if you chose the 10" wheels. My concern was mainly that the trailer wasn't going to be level due to my towing ball height, but as you say balls are at standard range height and sure Motolug manufactures their trailers to comply with Standards. The other thing that I was thinking of is that trailer wheels are often smaller than car wheels, this condition make the trailer wheels to make more turns than the cars' do (trailer wheels will spin faster than the cars'), so I was just trying to reduce this condition by choosing a larger wheel (i.e. 10" wheel). I asked Julia what wheel size she mostly sold and her answer was a convinced 8". My trailer should be shipped tomorrow and I reckon I will have it delivered in Spain by early next week. Thanks for your helpful comments. I decided to go for the Motolug after watching your video and after receiving prompt replies to my emails I sent to Julia (about 15 emails asking various details of the Motolug). Good vid. Me and my bro discussed trailers, and we concluded that for bikes, what was needed was a version that lay FLAT on the ground, so you only ride along, can put your feet down etc, without the dreaded 'in the air' situation going on, especially ramping up. Yes, can do it riding off the bike - I find that tricky, I wait just slipping my hand off the clutch and making TWO insurance claims, one for bike, one for car! Basically, the front mechanism would be the same but would DROP not raise, and once the bike was rolled on - no engine even needed so 'broken' bikes could use it too - the issue is how to crank the wheels down. What makes the most sense, is to be able to utilise a standard car jack or something. Anyway, that would be the perfect solution as it were? This is good though, until someone makes the 'flat-to-the-floor' idea a reality.

+interloperopp Yes good point, I always stop after a mile or two and check all is still well. A good little trailer if a bit on the pricey side for what it is....

I do not use the saddle to tighten the bike. Feels a bit crazy to fix it there. Rear seatpeg or subframe is much better. It pulls down the spring as well for a rock solid ride.

TMF, any chance of doing an updated vid, encompassing all the points discussed/learned since the original, to include both loading and unloading. Please also include the trailer type, wheel size and bike(s) used for testing. Using a combination of adventure, sports and touring bikes would be a good combo. It would also be good to know how your original trailer is working now, for example have pins worn or need to be replaced. Another good test would be to use a smaller vehicle, as long as it meets the towing weight requirements. I do not know where you are located, but happy to be involved in testing.

excellent review, thinking of getting a 2 bike version for me and my Son. Never used a trailer before so will look at Motolug. Do you use the same anchoring positions for the straps, as I guess you've used it a few times now

Front wheel chock is a little loose. Move the clamps closer together, it'll hold the front tyre much tighter. Use a strap at each side : from the frame or foot peg to the trailer axle. My bike is rock solid and doesn't move at all.

Useful review.I am considering a Motolug to tow a light-ish Bandit 650 to Spain and back each year. I haven't the space for a normal bike trailer either at home or in Spain so this seems the answer. From the comments below it appears that it will cope with long trips which is my main concern. Thanks for a good review! :)

@@toddy505 in the end I boight a Phoenix folding trailer which I used for a few years taking a GS to Spain.

A very well done video. I'd love to have a good small motorcycle trailer. I just don't trust them. I use a 16' dove tail, with ramp, now and it's big and cumbersome. It would be nice to have something like the bike trailer that UHaul has. So much easier to have a small trailer that I can run at interstate speeds not thinking I have to stop every 20 miles to check the straps and the trailer.

Having a bit of a TMF morning, you may have noticed! I've been a sub for a while but never really watched many of your vids, they're all nicely done. Also, judging by this video, your dad seems to be doing well for himself ;)

Good point....Fraid not! I sometimes lock the trailer to the car using my bike lock if I’m parked up (there’s a handy hole on my tow bar mount)....

Thanks for the great video , I've just bought the exact trailer , and , in fact , for pretty much the same bike ! You have taken away ( some ) of my anxiety ! My driveway and the road are sloped so I'm guessing loading " downhill " is the way to do it ? Has anyone tried the " lay it flat then jack it up method " ? It's going to be scary either way , just like the first few times you use a paddock stand! I bought it primarily for track days , riding hours to a track is no fun , riding back is worse !!! Would love an unloading video/ update on strap location ...I bought the rachet strap kit from Motolug ,I think that is 4 straps, interested to see if that is enough in your opinion. You made a top quality presentation! In addition, you can lower the gain on your fine, intro, theme song please. Go double system. Instead of connecting your lavalier 15 feet away to your camera's input, use something like a Zoom H1 recorder in your back pocket. Obviously, you do post work. Sync the two audio tracks in post. Keep the lavalier. In general, your audio is clear, strong and well done.

Subs are rocketing. There's a cool American one called the Stinger trailer in a bag but it's $1500. Can't really justify spending £750 for the Motolug (plus £550 for removable tow bar), so the Stinger is way out of my price range unfortunately. You should check it out.

steffydog1 .....no, per my other comment, not used it yet. Dees pack away reasonably small, but will fill your boot. Can leave part assembled and very easy to construct (no tools required).....

Every time I watch a TMF video I want to spend some money!!

Ayde Jukes Cheers Ayde - yeah no problem, the trailer is physically small and only weighs in at around 70KG so I can't think of a car that wouldn't be able to manage it.....

I notice you drive the same model range rover as myself. Did you go for the standard 8" wheels or the "10 ones to get the ride height correct?

I have no idea!

Was looking at one of the these to replace my Kilponoff trailer for the storage solution it offers. The only downside I can see is loading if the bike doesn't start when you're on your own. Looks good otherwise.

Yes it works with the GS though I’ve never tried it...

Hi. Thanks for all the vids. Enjoyable and useful. We pretty much share a stable! 12 plate R1200GS (last of the air cooled Triple Blacks - my 15th GS to date! I'm a pre-Ewan & Charlie GS-er. They weren't always every-bloody-where!); 15 plate STriple RX (I previously owned the same model you have); and on Good Friday I bought a 14 plate CRF250L with 350 miles on the clock. And although I've lived in NW Cumbria since '78, I was previously up the hill from you in Prestwood. ENOUGH WITH THE COINCIDENCES ALREADY! I hope you won't mind me making one negative comment on your otherwise excellent Motolug vid. NEVER strap over the seat - the bike can move from side to side under the strap. It's a bad move! A strap on each fork clamp (NOT the handlebars) and one on each side of the frame is best. Soft loops avoid damage by harsh webbing material too. Anything that passes through or over any part of the bike from one side of the trailer to the other is an absolute no no. Believe me, there is a hard way to learn this lesson and you don't want it to happen to you! I watched your vid because I was considering a Motolug for trailing the CRF as B.O.A.T.S. are scarce up here and road miles painful and tedious. I wanted to see how you fair loading on your own with the skinny 21 incher on that thumper. Please advise/demonstrate. Cheers and keep up the great work. Motonig

+TheMissendenFlyer. So the Motolug wheel clamp got hold of the CRF front hoop OK yes? Was loading the CRF viable as a solo effort? If so I'd love to see one of your videos demonstrating that trick. By the way - strongly recommend the Striple for your first track days. I've done loads on mine and they're great for the job - Check out the Donington and Oulton vids on my You Tube channel for proof. Street Triples Rule! Save that Panigale for when the confidence builds. Just a suggestion :)

If you were really worried about loading the bike solo, could you assemble everything but the wheels and load the bike on flat ground (with a tire jack already underneath the trailer frame) and then-once securely strapped down of course-jack the trailer up and attach the wheels? I’m not planning on doing this, don’t have one either, but just thought of it for people who are nervous about loading the bike when attached to the car or truck.

There is another video where a guy uses a 2x6 that looks about 18" long with grip tape. He inserts it under the gap where the motolug ends and looks to make it less of an incline.

Probably good to get your bike to the track but I would worry about dropping the bike at some point when loading or unloading particularly early in the morning, in the rain or when knackered after a ride. Would also be concerned with tripping over the trailer. Wonder if it can deal with a big pothole or a dirt road? I would definitely secure the front wheel. Some clever ideas in the mix .

I bought this primarily for transporting my dirtbike and it's been great for that...and yes, I have learned now how to strap the bike down, the key thing to my mind are proper handlebar loops either side, then the bike is rock solid on the trailer. Thanks for watching....TMF

I’ve not had any issues....

I currently live in the UK and have a VW Passat, i also have a BMW S1000RR 15. Im looking to go Turkey in the car and tow the bike long. Its 2300+ miles one way so 4600+ total trip miles. I want to buy one of these trailers purely because it is compact do you think its up for the job? Thank you

I got round it by leaving the light fixtures off initially; they get in the way a bit. Then I took the bike's seat off so I could sit on it / straddle it and drive it up the ramp with both feet on the floor. That may only work if you have long legs. In addition or instead of taking the seat off, you could use two planks of wood either side but when unloading you have to give it a fair pull on the bars to get it back over the front wheel chock so the planks may slip when you do that.

notAngryandy Nope, haven't used it in anger yet, but I have plans! I bought it mainly to shift my dirt bike around, the whole point of the big Beemer is it's nice to ride on long journeys, so I doubt she'll ever be loaded onto the motolug!

I agree about the KTM not my choice of bike for a full time bike, all the reviews rave about them off road but I feel the Big Girl (R1200 GSA) wins hands down every time when it comes to comfortable long haul in any conditions...(plus it doesn't have a dasterdly chain !) By the by do you have any additional accessories on the beema? I had to hardwire a compressor access to the battery as the dash port is connected to the computer which doesn't allow anything more than 5 amps output. I was thinking of installing a can bus for other things ....another review maybe? keep up the reviews BH

I use mine to trailer my bike to Belgium a lot and it's super stable. You do need to use straps and you do need to strap each handlebar as well as the strap across the middle. It will always look a bit shaky but that's just the nature of trailers. My bikes have always remained secure without issues. I've had it up to silly speeds too, not intentionally, I just forgot the trailer was there, and no problems to report. It's biggest strength is clearly the fact it can be taken apart and shoved in the boot :-)

moody Indeed, the little CRF is relatively easy, the STripleR was a little trickier....defo a two man job if I attempt the GS!

That trailer looks like a great design but I got the feeling it felt a little bit lightweight compared to say a heavier “permanent” style trailer (that would then admittedly need a space somewhere to always be parked….) 🤔

It is supposed to be able to take a GS but I've personally never managed to get mine on single handedly (mainly due to arthritic shoulders) - if you're young, tall and fit you should be fine..

Like the design of it... need a trailer for my bike i have a ducati 848, is this trailer long enough for sport bikes? Taking my Bike to Austria end of October is this trailer safe enough to pull it all the way there? How much arw they? I also been told any trailers i buy has to meet EU crappy laws, whatever that is, think more to do with trailers heaving weight/ stamps or something, i tried to google some info and prep myself before i leave i just can’t find any info whatsoever.. any advice or help from any of you much appreciated 👍

This would be fine for the 848 and long distance - cost was around £400 iirc...

I have the same Trailer for two years now and i would do 3 Things different when I load a Bike allone: 1. I would remove the Part with the Licence Plate from the Trailer, it is just two Pins, and you can not fall over it when loading the Bike. 2. I would not Use the Engine to put it on the Trailer, it also possible to Push it at least with my Bike which has 220 kg. 3. I would Strap the Bike down BEFORE I make the Trailer Level again, that is just safer......

Hi, I am about to purchase one of these but unsure if trailer wheels should be 8 or 10 inches. Can you tell us if the trailer you tested had 8 or 10 inches wheels? Also, can you tell us your range rover ball height. Floor to center of ball. Cheers, Dan

Daniel Ramirez Araujo I went for the 8inch wheels but the people at Motolug are very helpful if you give them a call, they'll tell you which you need (I'm not sure on the advantage of the bigger wheels to be honest). My tow ball is currently detached so can't give you the height (plus of course it also depends on what height you run the suspension at) - tow balls are at standard height ranges though so you shouldn't have any issues....worth calling Motolug for advice - all the best - TMF

So when the bike goes up the trailer the front wheel gets gripped and that is all that holds it before strapping the bike down ? Looks a great bit of kit ! $$££??

I may be wrong on the price - best check their website (there are various versions) - it is good though.....

Can you please do 5 year review of this trailer if you still have it please. General wear any rusting have bearings held up mileage. Thank you 👍🏽

OK, I've got a question for you. It didn't seem too much hassle getting it on the trailer, but how do you get it off the trailer? Any chance of another clip showing that?

Well it's just the reverse of wheeling it on - if anything it's easier because you don't have to "ride" the bike off using the engine (just need to cover the brake)......

What about the wheel chock though? Doesn't that stop the bike from going backwards?

It does as far as when towing (horizontal trailer) is concerned, but when removing the bike with it tipped back a decent yank defeats the mechanism....no issue...

Are you still a fan of this TMF? I'm trying to decide between getting a trailer like this or a van...A trailer would be cheaper and keep my good old Shogun for sure. I guess it's just a case of trusting the trailer and ones strapping!

@@TheMissendenFlyer The very bike I'm considering one for. Have you had a chance to ride the 450l? I'm guessing it's not worth the hassle of the extra servicing, seat height etc but none of the dealers have one in near me as they don't expect to sell it!

It's too bad it has a straight axle. If it had a drop axle (or wheel mounts like a 'single sidded swing arm'), it would be a few inches lower & way easier to load. One of my bikes weighs 724 lb. I don't think I'd want to try to drive it up that ramp like you did.... course I'm 63 now lol. Nice video 👍

I like the foldaway design of this trailer, mainly as I would use it as a rescue trailer if my son or one of his friends broke down. It would be great if the same company made a bolt on temporary towing bracket that could be attached occasionally to a saloon car for instance…….? Does anyone make those? 🤔

are you still happy with you trailer.the time has come to purchase one the ability to pop in boot whilst on bike is a winner on it will be a 750 ninja a 450 or 500 ktm enduro towed from uk to spain next year . and in distance future a harley fatboy tho may have a 300 rear tyre im sure a plate could be made to fit that also great clear vidio is your cam a go pro last qustion what is your rr if you dont mind answearing as im looking to buy a tdv8 3.6 a 4.4 again in future

Yes - I dragged my old Honda CRF to Scotland and back with it, to Salisbury plain (behind my later L322)….I’ve since “sold it” to Richy Vida….

No it isn't - almost certainly a scam. There are a couple of them advertised on Facebook for £79 . Try asking to view it and they will fob you off with an excuse about not being available and they will "send it to you by courier and your money is completely safe". View it (if it exists), pay cash and take it away with you.

Wow. That’s an old one Andy. I’m looking for a trailer. Ideally for two bikes, as I have a few, bit like yourself, but mostly 60’s to 80’s Japanese classics, including a first year (1975) .Goldwing, but also a Foggy replica 916SPS, so I need “safe” and “secure” in spades really. Have you come across any better solutions since this vid?. That is a cracking trailer anyway, (but your nervousness about the bike movement would stop me sleeping 😊.. There must be some good options these days - but I haven’t really found the “perfect” solution to be honest. Any hints ?. Cheers mate.

IIRC this is just the standard trailer, not the SE (it's not the one you can adapt for 2 bikes)......

is unloading harder or easier?

Can't honestly remember, but would make sense to leave in gear on the trailer I guess (and maybe bungee the front brake on to be super secure).....

Ps why would anyone put a thumbs down on this video ?? My mind boggles 🤔 it might be old teapotone doing a wind up 😁
