Moto Camping Episode 4: Riding the Toe Nail Trail//Plus: Fort McKavett and Presidio San Saba

In this motorcycle camping video we ride the Toe Nail Trail between Christobal and Fort McKavett, Texas. We learn that the trail's unusual name originates from the US Army's Camel Corps, which transported supplies through this area in the 1800s. After leaving the fort, we drop in for a quick visit at Presidio San Saba, which was built by the Spanish Colonial Army in the 1700s. We enjoy a beautiful (but very cold) day of motorcycle riding with two very interesting stops. Join us to see these remarkable places.

Being able to travel the back roads has been the best part of this trip. We have definitely changed plans to avoid bad weather. Neither of us are interested in being miserable while we ride lol. Take care you two! ❤️

Interesting stops! Was the Presidio in a neighborhood? Looked like a neighborhood park. Lawsy, that cold weather, I hope those hands can keep good hold on the bars in 30F. Anyway, really enjoying your backroad adventures. This fall has really been cold everywhere! Stay safe out there!

So glad you're enjoying the videos! The presidio was by itself but it's only about a mile from town. Luckily I have heated hand grips, but we'll be so happy to get out of cold weather.

Hope you guys find some nice weather! Maybe some duct tape for the cat scratches. Better a cat than a hog which are very prevalent in that area and especially in Big Bend (ask me how I know! 😒)

We are very lucky to not be bothered by hogs or javelin. The tape is a great idea! Much easier than trying to sew it.

I did a bit of additional digging on the web. The information I found indicates the trail was named for the ranch it ran thru. Here is a copy of what I found: “Welcome to Toe Nail Trail. In the late 1880’s, folks a-traveling’ up to Christoval from Scabtown-- That’s what they called that collection of brothels and saloons that “serviced” Fort McKavett ‘afore it became respectable-like and re-named itself Fort McKavett -- had to follow a trail fifteen miles north of the old fort through the Toe Nail Ranch. The ranch, by the way, was named “cuz it angled in a funny way across the corner of the county. Them people in Austin done give the trail a number. Don’t rightly recall what it is. Nothing interesting about a number. Pshaw, most folks still call it Toe Nail Trail and iffen ya ask for it by that ridiculous number, you likely to get a blank stare. Lotta folks have traveled this route over the years and still do. Give ‘em a wave iffen you see some while yer out thar.”
