I'm pretty sure that since Mary was steadily spiraling down into a psychosis, Tommy's monstrous form was probably hallucinated. It's a pretty sad idea though when you think about it; just imagine the deformed Tommy living locked away in a secret room... He moves through the vents to go out and play with his siblings but because of being malnourished and deformed they think he's a monster and Mary seeing him as one and telling the kids he doesn't exist doesn't make it better.

Watch vids on "psychosis" or "psychotic state". In essence, when a person is this extremely mentally ill, it's common for them to have erratic sleep & wake cycles & perform activities that are abnormal. People in such extreme states will also be most active during manic episodes (which may explain the good & bad days seen in the game). If Mary had depression as well, then excessive sleeping is also a common symptom. What got me is the weird placement of the cookies. It almost seemed like they were meant for Tommy, but as a player, we assume it's for the 2 kids we can identify (& thus, players are actually starving Tommy).

@@seuyo2966 I definitely agree about enjoying the nighttime lol! It was just the OP asked why the mother was only active at night. When you watch the mother's mechanics & recognize the theme of the game, you can see a deeper meaning behind the usage of nighttime. It becomes more symbolic towards a psychological meaning when all variables, the dev used, are combined. It's even more fun to play games outside, at night, on a dark porch/patio! Creepy factor increases when you have woods nearby too lol

From what I understood, the laughing man was just Mary's imagination, Tommy was real and the only interaction mary ever had with the real murderer behind the deaths of the other neighbors was that one message she got from an unknown number. So while Mary is in psychosis she sees Tommy as a monster, but her ‘perfect’ kids look fine. Also, at first I thought the tall monster was the dad, because he somehow knew where Tommy’s room was, but I also think it could be that the serial killer keeps breaking into the apartment sees the situation and just nopes on out of there because even he has no idea what’s going on in this house, but that’s obviously not the case.

I also suspect that the tall creature is actually Jack, the husband. Since it doesn't become properly active until Mary has to venture out of the "apartment" (her safe space that she's created in her head and in reality) - I believe it implies that Mary wanted to escape from his suicide, which is why there's almost nothing in the apartment (from what I could tell) to remember him by besides his ashes. I also think it's why the gun worked on Tommy, but not the other one since the gun belonged to Jack which he'd possibly used it to kill himself and why it seemed to be stopping manly from trying to kill Tommy on the final night by seemingly wandering around aimlessly in the apartment.

@@Dadude572 would it be possible that the murders were just inconveniently at the same time and are actually completely unrelated? The game seems to partially be a hallucination, so it might be Mary's interpretation of how she didn't want anyone in the apartment complex to know that she'd killed her child and the murders just happened to be the perfect distraction. It could also just play on the progressive paranoia of Mary as well, so the tall creature could be entirely fake.

  • @Dadude572

@@an_ordinary_goose That's the thing. It entirely could be unrelated. However it didn't target the kids and seemed to be protecting tommy to an extent by actively targeting you as you tried to kill him after he somehow knew about the secret door to free him. Why'd the murderer try to single her out? It doesn't outright kill Mary whenever he makes contact with her unlike what we've seen with the neighbor and it isn't hurt much by bullets so if its actually a regular person that's really peculiar. The murderer had to be involved with Mary to an extent and not just a scapegoat for her paranoia because she sees it in action as it really is trying to get seemingly everyone in the apartment complex so I dont think if it was real he'd ignore Mary. I'm assuming the texts are the only thing unaffected by her paranoia so I assume Amy was in fact seeing what she was seeing.

@@Dadude572 I'm inclined to believe even the texts weren't real either, but there was an intriguing comment supporting the idea that the creature was in fact the uncle that the kids end up going to - it explains why the creature knows where Tommy was kept (since the uncle does some digging up on what happened to Tommy) and why the kids don't seem bothered by it, almost like they recognise it. It doesn't really seem to explain it killing the other tenants though, unless the uncle was actually also about as screwed in the had as Mary.

I think Tommy didn't kill anyone really, the real killer was probably the man the neighbor talked about and Tommy wasn't really superhuman I think, the more outlandish stuff like breaking a board with his teeth only happen after you've went full mad after all, otherwise he just move around through the vents. And the Priest say you've treated him like a dog and the kids talk about playing with Tommy multiple time so it's arguable if he even really wanted to kill them and it wasn't just the insanity making you think he was attacking them, might also be that the husband was the only one who treated him as a human (since he killed himself over it) and his death made Tommy snap, his mistreatment by the mother might also have gotten worst (How he also seems to be trying to eat the kids might fit with him starving since he hasn't been fed since the start of the game given that his room stay closed behind the shelve until the end.)

My take is that the mother is an addict and needs medication for a psychosis. The third child was likely deformed because of the addiction. She doesn't kill it because she feels guilty for its condition. I believe the father died of unrelated causes, but the mother is too affected by it, taking back her old addictions and not caring about properly medicating herself. Tommy is forgotten in his secret room as the mothers psychosis takes a hold of her due to the mixture of drugs and alcohol. When the ashes are spilled she starts to hallucinate about her husband as the ghost. It first shows up when she is watering the plant that the funerary services sent her. There is a serial killer completely unrelated to the family taking the tenants one by one and the mother sees him as the father's ghost, but he can't get to her because of her paranoia. The one time he tried he is scared away by the alarm. The smiling man freeing Tommy was the mother doing so sleepwalking due to her guilt. Tommy's attacks are all on her head. She finally decides to kill tommy in order to "protect" the other children.

This is a very good portrayal of mental illness/addiction. That's definitely the sound of a beer can opening when you collect "stamina", and then there's the progression from trying to take the right pills, to saying screw it and gulping all of them down, to just a big pile of the ones you weren't supposed to take to begin with. Feels kind of obvious to say, but probably the reason why Tommy ran when you flashed him with your phone was because he was being kept locked up behind the bookcase. Someone else said he might have been just trying to play with the kids (like the hide and seek bit), and wouldn't be accustomed to bright lights... or know what a flashlight is. I'll definitely be watching for more of this dev's games in the future.

The tall creature might be the father and her feelings for Tommy. The kids don't react to it, and more importantly it appears to defend/help Tommy. Mary was an addict to medicine and beer from the audio cues. This means her true self was buried in addiction and this also means that a part of her likely didn't want to hurt Tommy. Like the vase's dust on the wall... things aren't truly gone. They linger even if faded. Everything we saw the "Father" do makes sense. The father likely tried to say "Tommy doesn't know better then to hurt people, he is very ill and needs help and support to improve." He would defend Tommy hurting others in the apartment not by saying it was right but opting for help. Mary views this as the father committing murders. jealous In the hall the son becomes the father, the son is the image of their father as a daughter is of their mother. A lot of people relate those things and as such... it isn't impossible to think that Mary's mind tried to lure her away from the kids into the hall and attack her there to stop her from hurting Tommy and potentially her other two children. Also the alarm wasn't too helpful for a few key reasons if the father was her/her reasoning. She was an addict to multiple things who was fighting herself in every way. Addiction destroys lives and even the person's own mind. When Tommy became a threat Mary killed him, but Mary made him the threat because everything good in her was buried or turned to ash and locked up behind addiction. ...at least this is how I'd view it personally. A part of her even moved the bookcase.

Now, what is interessting is that the kids heared the alarm that the laughing guy triggered, so mary did not imagine it. So he is real and the actual murderer, just that her paranoia made her think he was specifically trying to get her after he killed the other guy, but he likely wasn't because she was a hard target to deal with because of the alarm and the high attention she was paying. That is why he just seems to be there in the fight against tommy and nobody seems to know(not even tommy), she just imagined him breaking in but he wasn't there.

I got the impression that the mother had in fact boarded tommy away due to his condition as stated in the text from Carl, and perhaps he finally escaped only to be killed by his mother. (I also believe tommy’s appearance was altered that way due to the mothers’ hatred/shame for his condition or guilt after the fathers death) I think the long creature was trying to stop the mother by terrorising her because of the wrong she was doing to her child...maybe?

Maybe the tall monster was something like a "guardian angel" that is punishing Mary for all the wrong things she did to Tommy and also for causing Jack death, he kills all her neightbors, stalks and scares her to fuel her paranoia and to torment her (by also trying to stop her from killing Tommy)... Think about it, in the first ending she ends alone, with no friends (nobody that believes in her or love her), she suffers the side effects of taking a lot of green pills, then she is arrested and separated from her kids...

This all seems to me a giant metaphor for schizophrenia. Her guilt for mistreating, and possible killing Tommy manifests as the smaller monster. While the laughing being represents her own disorder, fighting her at every turn, sabotaging her. If you listen closely, the laughing being may look male, but sounds like a pitched female voice. This could indicate that this is a halucinatory/perverted/distorted version of her own concious. - She tries to be "a good mother". Whom deals with her problems by drinking (to regain stamina), and is a paranoid schizophrenic, not getting correct treatment dosage.

I understand Mary was in psychosis, and had multiple, severe mental illnesses, but with Manly's help, she really did try her best to defend the children she recognized. I do feel bad for Tommy, but I understand the ending (don't understand beginning of why he was the hidden child, of course).

_Go to bed_ There's NO way I could fall asleep - Idk how the kids could honestly. Mommy will _blat blat_ our problems away isn't reassuring. I felt disappointed in a way that Tommy was real. He was kept hidden in that back room all those years & just came out after the father was gone. So he just wanted to play with the Kayla & Kyle but scared them bc of his deformity. I would have preferred oddly for him to represent her guilt over losing him, a fear of being alone, fear of being a good parent. The outside murders of the other neighbors didn't quite make sense - if the tall laughing guy was the killer, why not kill Mary & family? Was he taking so much enjoyment out of her going crazy that he preferred to watch & toy with them instead? Or was he kind of an embodiment of the judgment of the outside world, laughing at her trying to cope? I appreciated the tenseness of the game, the horror of the situation. I wish the story had a bit more depth, that the pills were meaningful, some interaction with the neighbors meant something, that the alarm would have gone off so the tall guy would have been eliminated & it was just her & her kids & Tommy. Thank you for showing us all endings!

This game left me with some questions What would have happened if the mother let one of the children (or both) die at the hands of Tommy? Or what if she let herself be killed by the laughing man or by Tommy?

I would assume a gameover for being killed(though I wonder how the laughing man could even do that because while he is shown to be real, the encounters with him are hallucinations). I wonder the same about kids dying tho.

Some things just didn’t make sense. Why aren’t we able to close doors? Why do we leave the apt and balcony doors open in the beginning? What happened with the murderer? Why doesn’t the mom sleep with the children together in one of their bedrooms? Who is putting out cookies at night and not eating them? Why aren’t the kids scolded for running out of the apartment? The neighbors texted and threatened when the kids screamed, but they never text you about the gun shots? At least it seems they kept true about calling the police? How did nobody know about the child?

TW for mentions of infanticide further down, below the keep reading thing... What an interesting story. It seems like maybe, the idea was that the Laughing Man was the murderer on the loose and maybe we, as the player, had the view of him corrupted by Mary's wrong script. I want to say I've seen that before but i can't recall where, the third person views being just as corrupted as the first person ones when there's an external influence. This makes me think that all of Tommy's more supernatural abilities might have been her hallucinations too. It would have been interesting if there was more to the wellbeing of the children affecting the endings. Like, if she was a good mother affected by grief, drugs, and the panic of a serial killer versus a woman affected by all of this and taking it out on her children or neglecting them. Whether they would try for rehab and reuniting them versus keeping Mary away from the kids (if you think shooting one child in a state of duress and psychosis would prevent that, go Google some of the murderers who have been allowed to slip through cracks and kill again, my friend). I think the Tommy situation might have flowed better if it was a case of, well... Lemme just Space this out So you have to expand it And don't get hit by it unexpectedly I think if Mary had suffered postpartum psychosis or depression with Tommy and, well... Infants and pillows. It could have easily looked like an accident, or even SIDS. Mary Tinning's case proves how similar smothering and SIDS looks. It could work with the deformed child aspect, that she didn't think it was her child due to her mental state. Maybe she confessed to Jack at one point. Maybe that's why he killed himself. Maybe she was psychotic and imagining Tommy, when it was all the Laughing Man (aka the real serial killer). I feel like with a story presenting a 90's-2000's era apartment, hiding an entire human child wouldn't be feasible. It works prior to the 50's in my opinion, but after that you've got too much government intervention. What's more, grown adults with a good grasp on their mental stability don't tend to have a break dramatic enough to need so much medication after the death of a loved one. At least not seven days after. It takes a while to manifest and diagnose enough for a patient to end up taking 8 pills each night. If Mary had some existing mental health issues, or if she had found her husband's body in a particularly gory state, those cases would give a little more room for that much medication, in my opinion. Or if she had been prone to postpartum issues, then that could suggest Mary was prone to a sort of mental weakening when such dramatic changes occur. I'm only a Google-certified psychologist (read, not a psychologist) so I can't give a super precise or accurate analysis. Besides, the game is schlocky on purpose in some points. I'm just airing my thoughts on how this kind of story could be polished up for future storytellers using these key plot elements.

@@viethuongvothai686 It's quite soothing honestly. I've fallen asleep many times to KZreadrs playing horror games. If you close your eyes and just listen to the video, then you'll hear the KZreadr freaking out and you get some good laughs. And as you fall deeper and deeper into slumber, you'll pick up a select few words and phrases out of context, which also becomes funny. And then it becomes background noise that you don't realize is still playing. Then you fall completely asleep. I have terrible insomnia, so doing this helps me fall asleep.

I really love the meaning of this game. A horror, that hides the strange, tough and very questionable story about a mother, who has given a birth to a somehow deformed child, fell in depression after husband's suicide (probably because of their child too), suspects anything around, starts doing drugs just for making it to another day without any risks getting insane (well, as she thought, before we as the player gave her "a little more for an accident", which probably is a necessary mechanic, that shows her possession with an effect of drugs), suspects her "cursed" child in all of the problems of the life, finally kills him (Forgets this problem. As much as she could), realises that she is the one behind the slaughter of an innocent child and desides to finally end herself because of 3 lost lives (Husband, Tommy, Her own (and these kids as well too)), that are all her fault. Wow
