Mother Leopard and Her Two cubs feed on hoisted impala carcass- virtual Safari # 203

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Just back from leave, I catch wind over the radio of a rare sighting - a female leopard, unseen for years, spotted in the deep southern reaches of the reserve. What's more, she's perched in a tree with a carcass and her two elusive cubs. Excitement builds as I embark on the journey, sharing a unique birding competition among rangers during the virtual safari.
Arriving at the scene, the anticipation pays off as we witness the mother feeding in the tree, emerging from the tall grass. Patience is rewarded when the cubs make their appearance, culminating in a breathtaking moment as all three leopards grace us with a stunning finale, captured during a close encounter while the mother takes a drink nearby. Join me on this exhilarating virtual safari as we unravel the mystery of these rarely-seen leopards.

Competition sounds exciting. I have ticked of 598 birds in Southern African. I have decided to challenge myself to see if i can trump my count in 2024. Looking forward to your contest . Go for it. ( btw the way intentional feeding is cheating :) )

That is not a bad bird count. Good luck with surpassing that this year.

They have certainly features and spot patterns that we recognise and are able to use to identify them.

Morning LGR. That was such a very good and interesting clip of a very infrequently seen and pretty cat, the Kegelia female leopard and her 2 cubs of at least 4 months old feeding on a impala carcass in a tree. For a mother leopard with 2 growing cubs to feed, I'd think the impala kill will have to be a medium to large sized one. If she went hunting and made the successful kill the night before, I'd expect there to be enough meat on the kill to last them all about 2 or 3 days. Wouldn't you? I also don't know if you were able to sex the 2 cubs to see what they were at the time or not. I would be very keen and interested to know. But I'd also like to wish her the very best of hopeful luck with raising that energetic twosome all the way to hard independence & adulthood. As cute as they are, she's still going to have her paws full. I can't wait to see what next Sunday's Virtual Safari video clip will bring in a week's time. If you're very much able to send me an update on the other leopards and the lions as to how they're all doing, that'll be greatly appreciated and very helpful indeed please. Hope to hear from you shortly. Robert 28.1.24

A fully grown impala carcass would probably last them that long. One of the cubs is definitely a male but I am not certain of the other cubs sex yet. We will put out updates on various leopards at various stages on the Londolozi Blog, so stay tuned there.
