I don't know why it's so shocking 80% of the time it's parents who so these type of crimes. It's not shocking because it's so common. I always see comments like "omg how can parents do this" "how could a mother do this" it's really idiotic to say and think this. People love pretending it's strangers who are the danger to their children yet 80% it's parents always.

She did not do this to avoid losing custody. She did it because leaving their father alive to mourn them was the greatest pain she could possibly inflict on him. She wanted him punished for having had the temerity to challenge her right to those kids. The kids tragically were not even real to her. They represented an immense power she had over their father because she knew he loved them in a way she never could. And she exercised that power in this heinous manner.

It's not the same as a men's prison. They don't care. There are a ton of women in prison that are convicted of harming, endangering, or neglecting their children. A ton. Extremely common charges in women's prisons. Not only that, but the women convicted of these things will always hide it, deny it, minimize it, and tell their sob story. They will spin the story and try to make the other women feel sorry for them. They'll send their kids cards and letters and gifts. And a lot of people fall for it. They're good manipulators. It is a selfish and evil part of Brandi. I have gone to divorce with my first husband and shared the joint custody for years until the boys of ours (two boys), until both become 18. My first husband and I made the agreement to share the joint custody while with not to talk the bad things about each other with the boys while they were pre-teens. Ever since my boys are older now. My boys are happy for both of us to remain as friends, so they don't have to feel to worry to have both of us if invited both of us for anything. Both of my ex and I have no hard feelings for each other. Both of us had moved on, and both of us have separate of our different chapters of life, want the best for the young men as my two sons are having their own lives now and always are welcome to include their father in their lives. It's always the poor children that suffer when adults want to split up. I do not understand how a human can kill another human. Children that could not defend themselves against their mother. Their lives taken away like they don't matter. It angers me so much. I just hope those poor children are in a better place as they had a mother that obviously didn't care about them and she hurt their father by taking their lives. Heartbreaking.
I have listened to your videos since the beginning of med school and your OCEAN acronym has saved me many points on the shelves. Now that I Matched, it's crazy to think I've been listening for the past 4 years!
The only thing crazier than her mounting an insanity defense is that someone mounted her enough times to have multiple children. Sad.
If you listen to the 911 call, Brandi seems unusually calm during her conversation with the dispatcher. Brandi called her mother and when her mother arrived she found a horrific scene. Her mother was inconsolable. The children's father, who had been sleeping in the basement, also was inconsolable. Brandi was sentenced to 120 years in prison. (where she remains calm)
I thought that after half-heartedly stabbing herself in the neck, she would claim an intruder stabbed her and the the children. Or she would try to pin it all on her husband. I was surprised she fessed up so quickly.

You dropped some good zingers in this one, Dr. Grande. I rarely say that someone is just beyond redemption, but this woman sounds pretty close.
I wonder if she knew how evil she was. Or was it second nature?
What a monster. I can't imagine what would drive someone to do something so evil.
My husband's ex has this personality without the murders. The adult children remain hood-winked and don't realize it, but she manipulates each of them in different ways. For ex: acts like a young girl friend with her youngest daughter, acts like a stern-mean mom with another, submissive with her son, and hates her eldest. It's interesting to observe this dynamic. But the kids are disturbed by it and don't like each other. My husband filed for divorce when the youngest turned 18 and has to support her forever. She loves it and feeds off the power she holds over everyone involved. Just like this woman Dr. Grande described. She's hateful and vindictive.
How is anyone capable of harming another person... *let alone a mother hurting her own children?* It makes my stomach roll.
I appreciate your humor in a dark story.
