Mother FaceTimes with son as he is shot and killed in north St. Louis
A mother on Monday started to prepare a burial for her teenage son, who she believes was mistakenly shot and killed in North St. Louis last week.
"I'm struggling, but I have the strength," Leslie Byrd said.
Candles sat in a parking lot on Whittier St. in the Ville neighborhood where police said 19-year-old Jadun M. Byrd was shot and killed on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Byrd told 5 On Your Side she was with her son on Facetime when he took his last breath.
She added he had just caught a Lyft to meet her and was dropped off on the wrong side of the building, Homer G. Phillips Hospital.
"I heard the staff member said 'They just shot that boy up,' then somebody accidentally kicked the phone and I saw his head just roll and his hands curled up," Byrd said.
Byrd believes the bullet was not intended for Jadun.
"They didn't even rob him. They didn't take anything from him. They just shot him and pulled off," the mother of two said.
According to his mom, the teenager had a love for basketball and mentoring, worked a couple of jobs in St. Louis, and had studied engineering.
"That's how he created his relationships, through basketball and selling snacks," Byrd expressed.
He wanted to follow in his mother's footsteps too, who works for the Urban League and Better Family Life.
"To see all of his friends come to me and tell me exactly what I was teaching him. He was on my mission. I thought he wasn't listening to me. I really did think that" she said.
The mother uttered a message for other parents and youth in St. Louis
"Gain control and love your children unconditionally. Allow them to be who they need to be with just the appropriate guidance," she said.

Some of these young people are getting more and more ruthless,they do not value anyone's life not even their own and that's facts. I had 2 young men killed in front of my house and the last group admitted they were just doing something and prior to the shooting,the day before the rob a store and robbed a guy at gun point to do the crimes in his van. When they were caught that alot of guns and ammo and 18,17,16. Their victimn24 years and worked for Nasa,had a good head on his shoulders So I wish people would wake no matter the color ,their are innocent people being killed even if they are young

You can tell she’s still in shock by the amount of detail she went into and the lack of a depressed response. I can’t even fathom her pain, seeing her baby like that. I wish her a lot of good luck in her life.

No one knows how hard that is until you go through it...and to be able to use her son's memory and ambitions to keep pushing herself forward....I don't know how people do it but I'm glad that she is able to. She witnessed her son being born then she witnessed him pass away is a painful experience that no parent can handle. I pray she be strengthened. This story is very sad. I can only imagine her screams on that day😥

Doubt it, we all expect to lose out parents at some point. As sad as it can be it’s the natural order of things. However to lose a child is unnatural and a whole different kind of pain that is usually completely unexpected.

I came to this because her son looks just like my 14 year old. I am constantly praying for the parents and victims of violence. My son is currently hurting from 2 of his friends being murdered by stray bullets. Therapy is the key and I refused to accept our babies being killed as the new normal. Thats the clinic I goes to, I was supposed to have gotten my medicine there that day, but my medicine was not ready for pick up, and now I know why😔 I actually watched the video of the mother telling her son to hold on, etc. I immediately started praying for her.
