Some corrections on important dates that I mention: EarthBound came out in 1995 in North America, not 1994. EarthBound released on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2013, not 2014.

I think my favorite thing about Mother 1 is that it's very clear in this game that Gigyas is a product of parental neglect. A child whose own kind doesn't have time to raise him is raised by two surrogate parents, only to feel betrayal when his surrogate father uses him for power and then abandons him. And the only way his rage is quelled is by remembering that his surrogate mother genuinely loved him. Because of this I think it's a strength that Gigyas isn't introduced till near the end of the game, as it reflects the difficulty a neglected child has in expressing their emotions. We don't know why all these bad things are happening until someone who loved the child Gigyas explains it to us, and Gigyas himself only opens up about his pain when he is reminded that he is loved. For me, this sincerely enhances Gigyas's story in Mother 2. Instead of just being an Eldritch horror beyond comprehension, Mother 1 gives us context as to how he got to this point. The only person who ever loved him is gone, and his own kind only care about the power he has. And he has unfathomable power, but that power is nothing compared to love, the love he once knew as a small child in the arms of a mother who would sing him to sleep.

I accidentally made my way to Youngstown and Ellay immediately after getting Loid, and I think it made for a better experience. Teddy could take out most enemies in a couple hits, so the egregious random encounters weren't a hassle to deal with.

I love Mother its such a great game with amazing story telling for an 8 bit game. It genuinely makes me sad when you see Nintens Grandpas grave and realize his grandmother doesnt truly exist, such amazing world building

Thank you so much for taking such a deep look at this game. I feel like so many people gloss over it because Earthbound does much of what this game does, but better. It doesn't deserve to be forgotten just because of what came after it.

Super interesting retrospective on the first game in the series! I just barely started my first playthrough of Earthbound a couple months ago, so I'm still a newbie to this franchise. I seriously doubt I have the patience to actually play this game myself, so it was great to hear your experience, the highs and the lows. I always like looking at the origins of a series so you can better appreciate the future entries. I'm gonna try and beat Earthbound in time for your next vid. Great job with this one as always!

I don’t remember if i really had to grind a lot during my gameplay (didn’t use a guide), but for anyone reading: Once you learn PowerShield you can cheese through every fight in the game, since you become essentially invincible. I used this for the entirety of Mt. Itoi, but i don’t know if the average player reaches that level during a normal playthrough 😭

I think the fan translation did a much better job of presenting the story and tying it into the overall lore of the series. The original had so many questionable choices.

the uncensored sprites are excluse to the fan translation in the gba version. If you play the unpatched version, the sprites are going to be the censored ones.

Great vid! Tho for the gameplay, I wouldn’t recommend grinding, but just spamming 4th-D Slip when you’re in over your head. You get it early enough and Ninten usually has enough PP.

It is a great game! I just don't know if I'd have much to say about it honestly to warrant a full review. I'm a fan of the Souls games but just a casual fan. Also I did make make a first impressions video on the game shortly after it came out. Ended up being one of my lowest viewed videos lmao (then again I had only played like 7 hours which is nothing when talking about Elden Ring).

It's interesting how people got to mother. I got completly random in a German Video about scary Videogame boosses in Kids games to it because, yeah you guesssed it. Giygas was on the list and years later I watched the old LP of Aligator1024 a German YT Legend. Thank god I found these Games. PS: I did only finish Mother 1 because I got no Idea how to get through the Ghost Tunnel in Twoson and Mother 3 the save File got lost😢. But I plan on playing the Games and doing some stuff about Mother in Germany.

Personally i dont like NES games, but after seeing the video i could try Mother 1, or at least until the fan remake Mother Encore releases Also i dont know why i laughed so hard at 22:11 Also also, fun fact: Nowhere islands from mother 3 and Magicant from mother 1 has the same exact map, both has a sleeping dragon underneath and a castle on the same spot, does that mean they are the same?

git gud lmao if you think the encounter rate is too high, do not go near any nes rpg ever You don't even need to grind in this game. In my first playtrough i was able to beat this game without any grinding whatsoever. Also, about enemies giving "too much damage"... Use defensive PSI. There's plenty of opportunities to recover psi in this game. Enemies even give you psi recoveries in Mt Itoi's cave.

Earthbound Beginnings is charming but nigh unplayable. It's actually got the best story of the trilogy, it's just that it's not fleshed out or executed properly, likely due in part to technical restrictions & limited resources.
