Having a bunch of medals doesn't automatically make you one of the world's greatest gymnasts- it could but not necessarily. Some of these girls on the list medalled in the the 50's or around about that time when the standards of difficulty were significantly lower. Some of the apparatuses were different and it was just altogether a different sport in many ways. When the standards of difficulty are lower, its easier for one reasonably talented person to come in and dominate. For instance, the list placed Alicia Sacramone, Cheng Fei, and Shawn Johnson WAY behind Larissa Latynina (who preformed a very basic level 7 vault and yet has the most medals). Now compare that to Alicia's handspring front layout with a one and a half twist. When the competition is stiffer, its harder to rack up medals. Alicia, Cheng, and Shawn were up against much stronger gymnasts than Latynina. Medals are only one part of greatness. Degree of difficulty as well as general artistry should have been factored in somehow. Doesn't mean the girls from way back when weren't talented- Vera Caslavska is the most graceful gymnast I've ever seen. You can't help but be mesmerized- she just isn't performing at the same degree of difficulty as some of the more recent girls.

@@maussolo No, because these old Olympians are doing skills I was doing at 10 yrs old & far surpassing by 15 yrs old. So how could they possibly be " The Most Successful of All Time"? Successful at what exactly? They can't be compared doing cartwheels & full in back outs! Today kids are doing those same skills at 6 yrs old!!!!! Actually, those skills don't even exist anymore on bars, & kids are doing much more difficult skills at 6 yrs old!!!!

@@Leiake2604 True, but the difficulty was relative to the time they were in. If 50 years from now women are doing the skills men do like triple-backs etc and then people start to down-play Simone Biles... Also it's not just the era of difficulty, it's the sports-science, recovery techniques, equipment they used etc. Esp things such as the floor which wasn't sprung until the mid 1970s, the beam which wasn't padded until probably the 80s or so, the vault which was a horse not a table until 2001 and as of 2017 is now sprung as well. Yes they did far more elementary skills back then, but gymnasts nowadays have an unimaginable amount more to help them do what they do.

Shannon's Balance Beam routine at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics was amazing! She is one that people don't really talk about that much. It's always Mary Lou Retton, Kerri Strug, Shawn Johnson or Simone Biles. People know who she is but they don't mention her as much which sucks because when Shannon was competing she was amazing. I think the reason why they don't talk about her as much is because they know that she was amazing.

1972 is when the sport changed. It was my life. It is a different sport completely now. USA wasn't even on the world map. Cathy Rigby got a silver in Mexico in 1968 on the beam and she was the first American to even be noticed. 1972, everyone was watching the Olympics and Olga Korbut did a back somersault on the beam and a back lay out on the high bar into a flying hip circle. It was revolutionary at the time and considered too dangerous but the world loved it. The gyms in the US started filling up with little girls and then in 1976 Nadia's scores made the sport even more popular. Ludmilla Tourischeva was the real champion prior to Nadia. The bars completely collapsed under her at the Worlds and she still won every gold. Met her and Olga Korbut and Nelli Kim on a US tour....My heroes at the time. Now it's a completely different sport with ten times the difficulty and danger level from pre 1972. They would have fainted back then at what gymnasts are doing now. So proud of USA gymnasts. Once a gymnast, always a gymnast.

She was also far more of a representative of her sport in how she conducted herself, how she treated her competitors and everyone involved and how she reacted to any results. First place? Fantastic! Second place on back? Hey ok, let’s celebrate with the individual(s) who beat me! That is the true measure of a champion.

Same, she is mine too :) and I'm an American so that's between you and me. Lol Besides being the Queen of the UB, my favorite apparatus, she was 5'5 and 25 when she won silver in the AA at the Olympics. That just speaks for itself. Sometimes I think I'm the only one that appreciates how much talent plus hard work she had to have under her belt to do that. Simone will medal in AA at 25 at the Olympics if she is lucky and not injured beforehand, God willing, but she is 4'8 and muscular which gave her a huge advantage over Sveta just due to genetics. Sveta is nearly a foot taller, which in this sport is a huge disability. She had a hard time finding a coach to even take such a tall thin gymnast. Being the size of a 10 year old makes Simones power tumbling far far easier, but Sveta's lines are obviously far better...the best I ever saw. And I loved her passion and drama. When she called Sydney a black spot in her soul I felt it too how much she loved her sport and how much it hurt they messed up the vault and, consequently, her mind. Then she still found it in her to come back another quad where she finally got her AA medal. A silver, but to me it's like she's missing an AA Gold that she should have got in 2000, plus that silver.... Which is debatable whether she really deserved Gold or not even then. Love her so much, and her patriotism for her country is very beautiful as well.

It is very interesting to see the progression of the sport over the years. I do feel like I should point out that many of the elements performed by the very early gymnasts are things that my 5 year old daughter is already learning. This is not to say that those women did not do great things in their time. Absolutely they did! The sport has just advanced so much even since I was a competitive gymnast in the late 80s and early 90s. I think it is difficult to rank based solely on number of medals with no regard to difficulty of execution.

I agree just watching the vaults and floor routines from back in the 40s and 50s I was thinking I was doing those skills when I was in my first and second year in gymnastics. They were basic but what I found interesting was the skills they did on the uneven bars. I've never seen gymnasts preform from those decades. This sport has evolved so much and in that evolution it has definitely gained so much but at the same time it has lost a lot. It has gained more difficult skills on all events but it's lost a lot of the creativity and dance especially on floor, and it's lost the fluidity of uneven bars that it had back in the 70s and 80s when there seemed to be more transition between the high and low bar.

GymnasticFan, you are a true fan and a wonderful video editor. This is altogether very tasteful. The main criticism I would have of this is the weighting of All-Around medals and Event Final medals. Also, what does one do with Team medals, because a gymnast can't always help his or her team's strength/weakness? Nevertheless, I really appreciate your overall pretty painstaking effort. To speak generally, Nadia's greatness often isn't reflected quite as well as it should be because of her performance at Worlds (messed up in 78 AA badly) and injured and didn't even compete fully at 79 Worlds. But her Olympic record, as I have it, is top 3 with Latynina and Caslavska. Her 3 Euro AA titles is also matched only by Khorkina. But what she did to the sport - she broke the ceiling with all of her 10s and she redefined perfection. She also made a comeback, and competed as a mature woman very, very successfully. Many people will now be comparing Biles to Comaneci. Biles has surpassed Comaneci in terms of her overall medal haul, and her dominance is unbelievable, but I don't think that it even matters how many more World and Olympic medals she wins - Nadia's overall impact on the sport is unmatchable historically. Surely, though, Biles is the greatest since Comaneci. 2nd greatest since Comaneci, I think, is Khorkina. Latynina will always be the gold standard for the classic era. There may have been a couple of more elegant gymnasts (Astakhova, for example) or more powerful gymnasts (Caslavska) or trickster specialists (Bosakova on beam), but Latynina's consistency and elegance and dominance make her the quintessential classic gymnast. Gymnasts who competed before individual Olympic medals were rewarded will hopefully come to light some day. The biggest name among those is probably Vlasta Dekanova who was the first-place finisher at the 1934 and 1938 Worlds - the first 2 Worlds for women. I'm hoping that some day, footage of her will be unearthed. Zdenka Honsova was the first-place finisher at the 1948 Olympics, and I hope the same for her. It will also be interesting to see how good the German women at the 1936 Olympics really were, because their win seems questionable, in context. What really complicates matters even more is the ever-nebulous specter of Politics. The U.S. women were really underscored, probably for decades. Muriel Grossfeld and Joan Moore were much greater gymnasts than their lack of Olympic/World medals suggests. Also, gymnasts from less-powerful countries, generally speaking, did not get the results they should have. Well, I wouldn't have written all that if you hadn't done a really great job at this. Of course, I do realize you said "most successful", not necessarily "greatest". But this was a really fine piece of work. Thank you so much.

It's ARTISTIC gymnastics. They need artistry, there are rules in the cop for this and a 0.5 deduction if you don't have any. It's why the women perform to music. This is an intriguing list especially when you consider that a lot of these top ladies earned huge points in 6 years or less. Like Daniela Silivas who earned all her points in only1 Olympic event and 4 years all together. PS. Have to point out that this is a little unfair to Simone Biles considering the 2020 World Championship Competition and The Olympics both got postponed or she would be higher than she is here.

@@saragrant9749From what is public knowledge about her I believe she was very complicated. She did suffer a few injuries but nothing career ending. I think she achieved everything she had wanted from her career. Plus the fact that being from a very crowded line of gymnasts.

Yes, they collapsed after her dismount. She usually did a full twist on it. That was at Worlds and she won gold in every event.

Undoubtedly, an achievement not even dreamt by Yurchenko, Moukhina among those who don,t appear in the video, or Comaneci, Korbut or Biles. Great changes!!!
