Lol, good point!
Eureka! 4 minutes and 30 seconds in, I finally figured out the secret behind lightning fractals! The only reasonable explanation is: 1. The current is strongest or most concentrated near the two electrodes. Much higher than the distributed flow through the wood. 2. The place with the highest current starts burning. 3. When the wood starts burning, due to the current, its electrical resistance increases. 4. Since the burned path is no longer the path of less resistance, the flow gets redirected and the lightning forks. 5. The forked pattern is created as the current keeps shifting the temperature and burning new lines in the wood. 6. Only after a canal of 'least resistance' is fully formed, will the current solidify into a single flow. 7. The remaining charge in the now visible pathways will either flow back towards the core flow, or continue traveling towards the opposing electrode. But the remaining current is not strong enough to burn visible pathways anymore. So actually, the current is flowing along every pathway between the electrodes, but any path of least resistance will have a higher current flowing through it, which increases the temperature, and therefore the resistance. Knowing all this, perhaps it were possible to write a formula to predict the branching coefficient and angles of the forks, based on the conductive property of a material. Either way, we now realize that electricity was actually flowing throughout all the wood. And the higher current around the electrodes causes the lightning pattern to build up from both ends (This also explains why people are often confused about whether lightning starts at ground level or in they sky - the truth is that the visible lightning forms at both ends at the same time, but that the electrical current has been burning pathways for some time before it finds the path of least resistance. Captain flies away! (Although we should still remember that air has reduced resistance when it ionizes, while wood increases its resistance as it burns).
