Most desirable ‘SQUIRREL’ pocket knife - Awesome RESTORATION
Thankfully to my good friend from Russia I was fortunate to restore this extremely desirable and beautiful piece of history - ‘SQUIRREL’ pocket knife. It is valuable among collectors and unique design gave this knife huge popularity.
About The ‘SQUIRREL’ (Перочинный нож «Белка») Pocket Knife
The squirrel pocket knife, which began production in the 1970's, is considered the most popular among the Soviet population. All boys, young men and men dreamed of receiving this penknife as a gift.
"Squirrel" cost 1.60 or 2.20 and was produced in huge quantities - for general use. The knife is quite convenient to use and when folded takes up little space and weighs less than one hundred grams. The total length of the "squirrel" is 20.5 cm (8”), the blade is 8.5 cm (3.5”). It was produced with overlays of gray, dark gray, brown and black colors.
True, today, despite the millions of "squirrels", it is quite difficult to buy this knife in good condition. When buying, you should always pay attention to the plastic pads and the condition of the blade (with severe wear, the integrity of the chrome coating is worn). Another feature of the "squirrel" is associated with the design of the knife: when opened, the blade often does not straighten 180 degrees. Only a few pieces form a straight line, and therefore were especially appreciated among collectors and amateurs.
The Restoration Process
I started by dismantling the pocket knife. I was super nervous because even though it looks like a simple pocket knife, it was quite hard to remove plastic pads and be able to punch four pins out.
Luckily that went really well, so I removed all surface rust on a foot powered stone wheel and sand all metal parts afterwards. The plastic pads were dirty and a bit worn. First, I removed all dirt on my treadle powered Dremel, washed both pads and then polished them by hand.
As a last step to prepare the blade, liners and spring for assembling, I polished them on my hand crank grinder and got myself a super shiny ¨new¨ parts. I glued the pads and put together the rest of the parts.
To finish this squirrel pocket knife, I sharpened it on my new wet stones from Japan with different grit sizes: 230, 1000, 3000 and 8000. I tested the sharpness of the pocket knife with plain paper and that gave me a huge smile. I highly recommend any Japanese wet stone.

Ножик легенда.У меня есть много всяких ножиков СССР.но этот чем то особенный.Обычная инструменталка под хромом и дешёвый пластик. но всё же он особенный.Как я уже и писал - руки у тебя золотые.Лайк.

@@FFD_Restorations Нож Белочка по нынешним меркам ничем не примечателен. Однако во времена СССР нормальных надежных моделей ножей у нас было крайне мало. Особенно в нише складных ножей. В основном были либо узкоспециализированные ножи (нож электрика, нож сапёра, нож садовника и пр.) либо многопредметные ножи. Первых было крайне мало и найти их было трудно, а вторые чаще всего отличались крайне низким качеством. Нож Белочка на общем фоне выделялась надежной конструкцией, широким распространением, довольно приличными материалами, практичностью. Поэтому его так любили в те годы, хотя повторюсь - по современным меркам он вполне заурядный. Но те люди, которые много лет ходили с Белочкой в походы, на рыбалку, носили его в инструментальных ящиках до сих пор вспоминают о нем с уважением.

А-а-а! Это же Белка! У меня такой прямо сейчас на столе лежит! Ему лет сорок, если не все пятьдесят. Он у меня еще со школы. Все детство с ним прошло, потом в студенческом общежитии им пользовался, потом в армию с собой взял, и умудрился его там не утратить. Теперь в командировки со мной ездит. На рукоятке справа цена - 1 рубль 60 копеек. Примерно столько стоило питание в советской школе за неделю. Это не просто дешевый ножик, это друг на всю жизнь. Раньше их было полно, теперь все реже встречаются. Нож вроде бы и не самый топовый, но надежный и вполне качественный. Огромное Вам спасибо за такую вдумчивую и красивую работу.

A flywheel on the Dremel tool would significantly help with the surging of rpms that it has. It would make for smoother operation as well as save you some energy from constantly having to fight it when it binds up

Как-то, в армии, удалось в самоволку свалить. В соседний городок. Купил там такой ножичек, около двух рублей отвалил !))) По правде сказать, не уверен, что это белка была - может, и пантерка или лисичка. Так вот, не долго она у меня пожила - вечером сержанты забрали...

Поразительно нет электро инструмента,вручную можно дольше обрабатывать но зато не сожжешь метал,и не нарушишь структуру закалки ,есть металлы которые закаливать можно только один раз ,интересный ролик !!!🆗🆕

Помню эти ножи на прилавке туристического магазина в СССР. Новые они выглядели хуже чем этот старый, но отреставрированный. I remember how these knives looked on the counter of a store in the USSR. The new ones looked worse than this old one, but restored

😁 finally I got my hands on them. I can't believe what a difference to the cutting edge and the whole sharpening experience. I will never go back now, only Japanese wet sharpening stones. I did a (off camera) comparison for the grit size between wet sanding paper and these stones. The wet stone #230 has finer grains than #1200 wet sand paper. That just blow my mind. When I cut paper literally glides through... amazing. Sorry for long reply, thanks a lot for watching. Hey, I was wondering, do you have some skateboard material? For that challenge what you mentioned earlier, I hope you remember. If you could send me some, I would try to design it and build it...

Argentinean $ it is 1 u$d = 150 P (local money) we devaluate a lot, probably it is cheaper to buy a new deck for you than to send some peace of wood by mail. It is better to ask to any skater boy for a broken deck that he wants to get rid off. About the wet stones : What does it says In the information that comes with for keeping them slick and balanced ? To friction them with each other or to get a diamond peace of metal to slick the surfaces...?

@@shofarox4037 I am in Norway. It would be hard to find older versions here. Only available are made out of plastic or motorised on a remote control. Expensive like hell. With wet sharpening stones I received two red stones for leveling after usage...
