Montalcino is located in the province of Siena. In medieval times the main economic activity was the tannery and Montalcino had numerous factories for working leather, factories that were famous for the quality of their products. Like many of the medieval villages of Tuscany, Montalcino has experienced long periods of peace that have allowed the inhabitants a certain prosperity. During the late Middle Ages Montalcino was still an independent municipality of considerable importance thanks to its position on the old Via Francigena, the main road between France and Rome, but over time it entered the orbit of the powerful Siena. After the fall of Siena in 1555 the Sienese nobles perched in the city for 4 years with the hope of being able to return to Siena one day, giving life to the Republic of Siena sheltered in Montalcino. But in the end also Montalcino became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany until the Unification of Italy 1861. In the twentieth century the fortune of Montalcino was to be in the center of one of the most important grape growing areas. The territory, in fact, is celebrated for the presence of Sangiovese vineyards from which the famous Brunello di Montalcino is obtained. The main square of Montalcino is Piazza del Popolo. The main building of the square is the town hall, also known as Palazzo dei Priori. The palace is adorned with the heraldic coats of arms of the numerous podestà who have ruled the city over the centuries. A very tall medieval tower is incorporated into the palace. Near the town hall, there is a Renaissance structure with six round arches, called La Loggia, which was begun at the end of the fourteenth century, and finished in the early fifteenth century, but which has undergone numerous restoration works over the course of the successive centuries. The city walls were built in the 13th century. The fortress, on the other hand, was built at the highest point of the city in 1361.
