Got quite emotional watching this... The "return by moonlight" seemed pretty apt for a night fighter, and then pushing back the Lancaster into the hangar made me think of all those who went out night bombing raids-, and remembering those who didn't return. Thank you.

Hi Neville, no word back so far, but I run a 1957 Land Rover as a daily driver and do all the work myself, so not completely out of the loop on old engines! It would be good to hear from you again and do not worry, I am not a nutter!!!

Hi Andrew the best time in my opinion is when the Lancaster does her taxi runs. The centre is open Mon through Saturday time 9.30am to 5.0pm. Lancaster taxi runs on 9-11-16-18-23-24-27-30 of October and Nov 3rd PLEASE check dates and times on their web page Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre to make sure I have given you the correct information .

Great work NW and the team! Ever since 'We was bratz '...We conjured up a Great what if?....Instead of so many Heavy bombers...Go a least half way with the Mossie.. Example: For No. 6 Group RCAF....If you went "Full Monty" with the Mosquito....You could better utilize resources....Build just Mosquito at Malton instead of the Lanc.....Two fewer Merlins...5 Fewer Aircrew...Bomb load equal to a B-17 at 400 plus MPH.....You could go Pathfinder....Then have some wings fly as nite cover...a Wing or two fly in as Intruders...mash em up ahead.

Hi Thai holiday home. Simple reason they ran out of time, they want it running this Saturday (2 days away). This looked liked like the only slot in the weather they could test the engine, Thursday and Friday rain and windy. Saturday is the 30th anniversary of Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre and expecting around 5000 people to attend. It has taken a lot longer to get the engine to this stage then anticipated . Night Fighter so its logical for a Night test.

I do think it a dreadful shame that the BBMF dont have an airworthy Mosquito any more. The last one I saw in flight in the U.K. flew over my house at Faringdon heading toward Fairford for an air display in May of 1996 I think it was. I think that was the one that crashed the following june or July at Barton in Manchester?

Guess the first couple of failed starts were on the prime, helps when the fuel cock is turned on! Well done all the same, hope HJ711 gets airborne soon. The guys working to restore a Canadian built Mossie in Calgary, Alberta, Canada will be very jealous indeed. www.calgarymosquitosociety.com

There are a bunch of fellas and molds down here in Kiwiland that make those things with the new glues and materials. Not sure but think they are now up to number three. It is just a thought. Would not have the air frame history as yours does mind you, cheers!

Parts including wings were made at AVRO - Malton, Ontario, Canada . AVRO was a leader in plywood composites.

OMG i am doing my PPL in the RAF i was offered a chance to go for pilot training, as i was due to get married I had to turn it down DUUUUUUH worst mistake of my life. I should have turned down the fiance instead! Im hoping to fly the 2 seater spitfire!

Is she being restored to airworthy condition?

I was kind of hoping she would fly. After the tragic loss of G-ASKH (RR299) in 1996 the UK hasn't had a flying example of this type. Here's hoping!

These engines are started on their primers with the mixture control in cutoff. As the engine begins to start the pilot advances the mixture towards run. The whole goal is to not flood the engine as it’s started. They also have a multistage super charger that increase the difficulty of starting the engine. Don’t forget the technology of the day is nothing compared to what we have today. Think about how easy it is to start your car these days when compared to the old carburetors and chokes used in the days of these airplane engines. Quite frankly it is amazing what the engineers came up with during the stress of the War and relatively crude machining capabilities.

Of course I have no idea which model of engine was on that particular airplane, but that doesn’t invalidate my comment about how they are started and the technology of the day. Have you ever started an engine of any type in this category or on an airplane? Please don’t be a troll and ruin an outstanding accomplishment these men and women have achieved.

I believe the Mosquito used the MK 21-25 engines and from what I read it had the two-speed single stage super charger which increase boost up to 18 psi max at around 10-11k feet. But for our previously rude poster the supercharger produced boost even at lower altitudes. The point was these engines don’t start like a car. There’s a great video showing Jay Leno starting a static engine on KZread.

soaringtractor Mr. I know more about things than anyone, you seemed to forget that the question here was why all the hard starting and fuel starvation and not the specifics of which version of the engine is being started. Your attitude and lack knowledge about the common starting of these big airplane engines, not to mention the crude comments and basic hatred you have shown for others is overwhelming. Do us all a favor and go somewhere else with your comments.

It was just a thought and if it was firing just after TDC it would account for the flames in the ports! I did not spot them advancing the mag though, but static timing tends to be as close as you can get it and then try it! You and they are doing a great job and it was wonderfull to see it start!!!

@@johnwharton2617 Sorry John no excuses for not replying. Background on this engine. Tony bought it from a scrapyard in 1992 with no history,and has not been run since he bought it The engineers had a lot of trouble with the inhibitor in the engine lot of it had gone solid and powdery causing major problems. This caused a lot of delay on testing. Then the weather closed in causing more delay. The test took place on the Wednesday evening with bad weather forecasted for Thursday and Friday. The next day Saturday was the 30 years anniversary of the centre so hey wanted it up and running for the public. I have no experience with Merlins only car engines,I guess it could have been retarded. I thought it was just burning of all the gunk around the exhaust valves. @@nevillewheeldon1693 No worries Neville! It was just a classic display of firing ATDC and if you missed it, I run a 1957 Land Rover as a daily driver! Currently doing 33 miles a day! Just fitted electronic ignition to it and to my joy it started instantly, though it was 15 degrese over advanced! Thank You for your answer as it men't alot and you have a good new year also!!!
