Special Kay starts #1 engine after 6 years of restoration. The ONLY flying A-26A Counter Invader!!!
In attendance are more than a dozen men who flew THIS ACTUAL AIRPLANE in the 1960's either in Alexandria, LA at England AFB or at Hurlburt Field near Fort Walton Beach, in Florida. This is an awesome display of R2800 Engine sound and performance. Turn up the Sound!!!

I love the start... the turbo sound and warm up. Great video.
I hate to see inert historic vehicles. I love to see them working! Good job keeping a part of history working back again!
Beautiful aircraft and an awsome sound when the radials come to life. Great job crew!
Good work on the A-26A!
Awesome 👍 And I'm so glad you use recording equipment that shows true motion of the prop👌👍

It's a broadcast camera. The real deal. But I do this for free for the museum and the vets.
I'm glad to see one still around but it sure could use a polishing

it's been restored and is painted now. look for the other videos on my channel
this may be the only one flying but we all need to remember the young brave men in ww2 that went over to Germany and some of them never came home to their loved ones their must have been 1,000s of young brave men that never came home so put you hand on your heart and think to yourself we will remember them
It makes me feel at ease when I hear about these old birds being restored and taken care of. My first plane ride was in a PT-17 Stearman it’s probably what pulled me into becoming a pilot , thank you and throttle on gentlemen be safe and proceed
Dam that prop is close
Radials are indeed phenomenal.
I worked on an A-27 which had a bunch of students from an AP school start stripping the paint, only to find a bunch of bondo from a pre3vious civiliam conversion where the bomb doors where fiberglassed shut . I had to do the Valve timing on 1 engine for my PowerPlant practical exam
Crew chief on a squadron of these in Korea in the '50's. We had all varieties with the glass nose and the machine gun and cannon fitments as well. Used mostly for night bombing runs. Very nice airplane. When I left Korea got stationed in Victorville at George AFB where modified versions were used to tow tatgets for the Army at Fort Irwin near Barstow. Has this one flown yet?
Nice, congratulations. That has to be a good feeling.
Great achievement ! You are all keeping aviation history alive and well. Thankyou. Colin UK
Alright! When they really were in combat, while strafing, that concentrated 50 cal fire could sure get the job done. Glad to hear of the progress.
Good afternoon to all from SE Louisiana 2 Sep 22.
Just saw that one fly over Bridgeport Texas on 09/09/22. Sounded good.
Great job gang!! She's beautiful!! Can't wait to see the front wheel leave the ground.. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥂🥂👍👍👍
Congratulations !
Congrats guys! I've been waiting to see Special Kay come to life again....AWESOME! I'm going to building a RC B-26K later this year. Looking forward to more updates.
Radials are awesome!
I love restored world war two planes ,and the men who retore them ,it honors our vets .
Fantastic job guys !!!
A symphony! Awesome
beautiful
Great stuff!
The a-26 is my favorite bomber/attacker allied aircraft of world war two. Love the c model with the glass nose best.
Nostalgia 😁👍💕
One word "BADDASS" 🇺🇸
Excellent beautiful amazing sublime inmortal.
Those props are huge! Proportionally looking to big for that plane size.
@hawkeyepoole
4 жыл бұрын
Those are Pratt & Whitney R2800 producing 2500hp each making it necessary to use a much larger prop to make use of the extra HP. A 'normal' A26B/C could not swing that big prop as effectively.
I remeber these and A1Es at Eglin AFB geild #10 in 1960s .

Looks like she wants to fly!!
the Spirit of Waco flown by Joe Neemer is an a-26 that flys at air shows all over the country currently, I wonder where you got the idea that Special Kay is the only one flying?
@hawkeyepoole
4 жыл бұрын
Special K is the only flying A26A Counter Invader. It is NOT the same airplane as an A26B, such as the Spirit of Waco. We also have Night Mission in our hanger and you can clearly see the differences. Eight hard points for bombs, 8 machine guns, permanent tip tanks, R2800 engines producing 2500hp each vs 2000hp each on the A26B.
Bloody Damm Awesome ✝️🇺🇸😀 But I want to Fly it 🙂
MUITO BOM TRABALHO VERY GOOD 👍👍 🇧🇷
PRATT AND WITHNEY 2800 EL MEJOR MOTOR ( DC-6 DC-7 Y MUCHOS OTROS )
I'm wondering where this plane is... I was at a hanger at Marana Municipal airport about 2.5 years ago, and saw a plane there that looked like this type of a plane, ... An A-26, similar to the planes used in the movie Always...
What fell under the plane at about 4:07?
@hawkeyepoole
7 жыл бұрын
That was a water bottle that was behind the copilot's seat. That area is open to the bomb bay and it bounced around until it fell out. We all laughed that we had a 'loose bomb' incident.
Nimrod,translates over to "seeker of men" or "hunter". You know the Brits has an ASW plane named Nimrod? Based on the translation I can see why the name was used. From the Old Testament in Hebrew.

We use the biblical translation "A mighty Hunter of Men". This was a 'Truck Hunter over the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos during the Vietnam War.
Question, why don’t they let the plane move? Only for a still engine test?
Is that the carb intake in the wing?
There's several of them abandoned in Nicaragua, left over from the bay of pigs invasion.

Those are A26B Models. This aircraft did not exist prior to 1964
Question what are the requirements needed ro be able to work on airplanes like these
Was this done at Perrin AFB now called Grayson County Airport ?

No. Meacham Field, Vintage Flying Museum, by Greatest Generation Aircraft.
Is that an A-26A canopy a later mod? I thought the As had a single, upward swinging hatch not the dual clamshell...
@hawkeyepoole
Жыл бұрын
All production A-26A, A-26B and A-26C airplanes had the clamshell
4:05 water bottle bomb drop test successful
The video was very beautiful, but I could have gone wrong if that water bottle were eighth substances. FOD is very important in aviation. The mechanic with the fire extinguisher is also in the wrong position, should be in front of the propellers and NOT behind.
@hawkeyepoole

The fod was an empty water bottle and no worries, the prop blast carried it away. The fire guard was one of few allowed close that day and he was behind to look for large oil leaks or flames inside the cowling not visible from the front.
i wonder if he was tempted to run his fingers on the prop ?

The Special Kay story is a long one, but my involvement is as a documentarian. I'm documenting the restoration from beginning to end. So far 6 years. There are several more videos about it and the crews here and at Vimeo/channels/Nimrods
What was her payload ? 2 man crew ? Thanks

12,000lbs of ordnance, and I think 5600rds of 50 cal. and a varied ordnance load, of napalm, iron bombs, rockets, bomblets, etc.
Lot of guns in the nose

why is he moving so close to the propeller?

Was it a fighter??

Technically an attack bomber during WWII and later listed as a bomber and then relisted as an attack aircraft.
"6 years of restoration"...?? Are you kidding..?? This thing looks like it's been through WWIII...!!
@hawkeyepoole
Жыл бұрын
Well it sat for about 15 or more years and had TONS of things to repair. When this video was shot we were into probably 20,000 hours of maintenance
INTERESTING... IN THE GRAPHIC TEXT THAT APPEARS AT 3:36 HE SAYS 30,000 LB AIRPLANE. THIS ONE IS EMPTY... I WONDER WHERE THE OTHER 4 TONS ARE? maybe there invisible. Empty weight: 22,850 lb (10,365 kg) Loaded weight: 27,600 lb (12,519 kg)
@hawkeyepoole
4 жыл бұрын
The A-26A weighs around 27,000lbs empty due to several factors including added armament and armor around the cockpit.
Can it fly? I don't think so.
Nothing like those double wasp or whatever type of engines are on that one starting up the sound is unbelievable which propeller blades are awful close to the cockpit
@hawkeyepoole

Another optical illusion because of the placement of the camera. It's further away than you think although I can't remember the actual distance.
P 70
In its ground attack version.. it can put 12-14 forward firing machine, canons or machine guns.. plus wing missiles. At 350 mph and all being fired,you stand little chance of survival, should the pilot want you dead. Serious fire power.

what have they be restoring ? It looks ugly and dirty as hell.
@hawkeyepoole

Airplane restoration is less about cosmetics and more about structural and mechanical restoration. Yes it's ugly at this point but over 20,000 man hours have been spent repairing a never ending list of issues that we found. Later we took care of the cosmetics. Look at recent videos.
