Special Kay starts #1 engine after 6 years of restoration. The ONLY flying A-26A Counter Invader!!!

In attendance are more than a dozen men who flew THIS ACTUAL AIRPLANE in the 1960's either in Alexandria, LA at England AFB or at Hurlburt Field near Fort Walton Beach, in Florida. This is an awesome display of R2800 Engine sound and performance. Turn up the Sound!!!

    Crew chief on a squadron of these in Korea in the '50's. We had all varieties with the glass nose and the machine gun and cannon fitments as well. Used mostly for night bombing runs. Very nice airplane. When I left Korea got stationed in Victorville at George AFB where modified versions were used to tow tatgets for the Army at Fort Irwin near Barstow. Has this one flown yet?

    Those are Pratt & Whitney R2800 producing 2500hp each making it necessary to use a much larger prop to make use of the extra HP. A 'normal' A26B/C could not swing that big prop as effectively.

    Special K is the only flying A26A Counter Invader. It is NOT the same airplane as an A26B, such as the Spirit of Waco. We also have Night Mission in our hanger and you can clearly see the differences. Eight hard points for bombs, 8 machine guns, permanent tip tanks, R2800 engines producing 2500hp each vs 2000hp each on the A26B.

    That was a water bottle that was behind the copilot's seat. That area is open to the bomb bay and it bounced around until it fell out. We all laughed that we had a 'loose bomb' incident.

    Nimrod,translates over to "seeker of men" or "hunter". You know the Brits has an ASW plane named Nimrod? Based on the translation I can see why the name was used. From the Old Testament in Hebrew.

    The video was very beautiful, but I could have gone wrong if that water bottle were eighth substances. FOD is very important in aviation. The mechanic with the fire extinguisher is also in the wrong position, should be in front of the propellers and NOT behind.

  • @hawkeyepoole

    @hawkeyepoole

    The fod was an empty water bottle and no worries, the prop blast carried it away. The fire guard was one of few allowed close that day and he was behind to look for large oil leaks or flames inside the cowling not visible from the front.

    In its ground attack version.. it can put 12-14 forward firing machine, canons or machine guns.. plus wing missiles. At 350 mph and all being fired,you stand little chance of survival, should the pilot want you dead. Serious fire power.

    Airplane restoration is less about cosmetics and more about structural and mechanical restoration. Yes it's ugly at this point but over 20,000 man hours have been spent repairing a never ending list of issues that we found. Later we took care of the cosmetics. Look at recent videos.
