Mosaic Damascus | Expectation vs Reality

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My first try at making mosaic damscus. Very tricky stuff! Congrats to all the makers that make this kind of work look easy. I definitely learned a lot on this one. If you want a more detailed look at this kind of process I suggest you watch the recent damascus playlist by @TyrellKnifeworks it's great!

I think I prefer the reality to the expectation. That was a gorgeous Damascus. Thank you for sharing both your knowledge and learning.

That limit switch looks like it came in really handy getting a nice even thickness and can go so much quicker. No more messing around with blocks and setting them up each time.

That was a lot of work, wow! To me the result (reality) is better than expectation! Variations and “imperfections” deepen the beauty of the piece. If you finish the blade please post the final result, I’d love to see it. Great work

I think it came out great! They never go exactly as expected. To stop the twisting on the first C's, I use a square die on the top of my press and flat die on the bottom to square it. Then it doesn't twist on you.

A true craftsman is someone who has failed more often than others have tried. I will never be on your level, not even on your worst days. Don't forget that under all this tedium and all these mistakes, there's something buried that's special and unique and will more than likely outlive you.

To me, the whole point of doing patterned steel are the random elements that emerge. Perhaps another bladesmith might fault the end product as not being uniform enough, or complying with their vision of what mosaic should look like, but this is a delightful pattern and who cares whether it measures up to someone's idea of perfection? I'm sure it would sell quickly and the customer would be delighted.

You have a warped and distorted reality! 9:49 What would happen if you put your stainless steel foil right below all the sections you are welding up against that plate? Would that plate fall away as you ground the welds off? 10:49 I bet you could boost your sales to the North if you could get that shape just a little bit closer to a maple leaf.

3:25 I am guessing that the uneven thickness of the layers was because the outer layers cooled more than the inner layers? Perhaps re-heating between every pass on the press would have eliminated that issue.
