Initially the same until the end of the video. The engraving of that tiny plate at the end was the reason for the brass/chocolate creation. If you want to engrave something, you secure it in the brown stuff. The bowl can be adjusted for angle etc.and is so heavy it won't move/shift while doing it.

Honestly, it looks and melts like hard grade Monster Clay. Never thought of using monster clay as a stabilizing base for detail work, but I think it might work almost as well as this pitch stuff.

i realize this is a payed add for the Vevor set up and i hope your keep perusing Chasing and Engraving but you might want to think about adding a ring of felt or leather to the inner lip of the stand so that there is something for the blow to bite into this will make it more stable and stop it from creeping out of position Metal on metal is relatively slick (over all your have made a beautiful lifelong tool)

Hi BB. To make a perfect fit between the bowl and the base, the idea of using the bowl as template for the sanding paper is right. But you should do the contrary too. I work with marble and once I made a rolling ball fountain. To achieve the perfect match between ball and base I used quartz sand with water and rolled the ball until there were no flat spots on both contact surfaces. It's a long process but really effective.

What's crazy is that's probably close to $300 worth of Pitch in that bowl right there, bc just one of those small little loaf pans of Pitch is around $150. Which is absolutely ridiculous!! But it looks good though hope to see this getting used in an upcoming video. 👍👍

Next time you cast you should think about a riser vent. Gives a place for the air and gas to go and gives 2 reservoirs of molten metal for the initial shrink before it solidifies. Very interesting project. I have a friend from decades ago named Jim Downing in Springfield Missouri. He is a legend when it comes to engraving. And he made a very nice life for himself. I believe he is still working but I doubt for much longer.

The pitch when cool is actually fairly brittle which is why he melted it with the torch to mount the engraving piece. The force required to do the engraving is quite low when spread out over the entire piece so there is little risk of shattering the pitch behind it during the engraving process.
